The Second Result

Chapter 11 - The Second Result

Daniel was not Eli’s great-grandfather.

He was Eli’s grandfather.

He had misspoken because he was crying so hard he could barely breathe.

The independent report established a direct biological relationship consistent with Daniel being Eli’s paternal grandfather.

It did not prove Claire’s relationship by itself.

But it proved the story was not invented.

Claire’s attorney immediately requested a court-supervised retest using a state-approved laboratory.

This time, the judge agreed.

Grant’s lawyers objected.

That made the judge suspicious.

The second official sample was collected in court.

Claire watched Eli swab the inside of his cheek.

He looked bored.

That made her love him more.

Children should be bored in courtrooms, she thought.

They should not understand what is at stake.

Afterward, Denise allowed Claire ten minutes with him in a conference room.

Eli sat across from her.

“Is it true the internet says you’re crazy?”

Claire sighed.

“Yes.”

“Are you?”

“Sometimes.”

He smiled.

Then he became serious.

“If the test says you’re not my grandma, are you going away?”

Claire stared at him.

“No.”

“But you didn’t know me before.”

“I know you now.”

He looked down.

“That’s not the same.”

“No.”

Claire reached across the table.

“It might be better.”

Eli looked at her hand.

“Why?”

“Because now I get to choose.”

Slowly, he placed his hand in hers.

The court-supervised result came the next morning.

99.97 percent probability of grandparent relationship.

Grant’s first laboratory report was referred for investigation.

The judge returned Eli to Nora’s guardianship, with Claire and Daniel approved as temporary support.

Outside the courthouse, cameras waited.

Claire stepped to the microphones.

Grant expected her to announce an inheritance claim.

Instead, she said, “My grandson is not a corporate asset.”

The reporters shouted questions.

Claire continued.

“I will not discuss his finances, his medical history, or his future in public. He is a child. Anyone who claims to be protecting him while using his name to move a stock price should be ashamed.”

Across town, Whitmore shares fell six percent.

Grant called her within minutes.

“You just cost us two hundred million dollars.”

Claire stood beside Eli, who was eating a pretzel.

“No,” she said. “Dad did.”

She ended the call.

That evening, Eli returned to the hotel because Nora needed rehabilitation before she could go home.

Claire gave him the largest suite on the floor.

He chose the small room beside the kitchen.

“Why?”

“It feels normal.”

Claire understood.

At bedtime, Eli put the old photograph on the nightstand.

Then he asked a question she was not ready for.

“Where is my dad buried?”

Claire looked at Daniel.

Neither knew.

Nora had arranged Adam’s funeral while recovering from injuries after the crash.

She believed he had been buried in Pennsylvania.

But when they checked the cemetery records, there was no grave.

Adam Bennett had never been buried there.

His body had been claimed by someone else.

The signature on the release form belonged to Grant Whitmore.
