The Empty Bucket

Chapter 14 - The Empty Bucket

Claire searched the hotel first.

Daniel searched the bus terminal.

Marcus alerted every staff member without telling the press.

Nora, still weak, cried until the nurse gave her oxygen.

Three hours passed.

Then Daniel remembered something Eli had said.

Before Claire.

Before the hotel.

Before DNA tests and lawyers.

Eli had spent his afternoons washing cars near St. Vincent’s Church because the pastor let him fill his bucket from an outdoor faucet.

They found him sitting behind the church.

He had no coat.

No money.

Only Adam’s old baseball cap.

Claire stopped several feet away.

She did not run to him.

She had learned enough about Eli to know that love could feel like another trap if it moved too fast.

Daniel sat beside him first.

Claire stayed standing.

Eli stared at the ground.

“Are you mad?”

“Yes,” Claire said.

He looked up.

She added, “And very glad you’re alive.”

He looked away.

“People keep getting arrested.”

“That is not because of you.”

“My dad died.”

“Not because of you.”

“Nora got sick.”

“Not because of you.”

“Your company is losing money.”

Claire sat down on the pavement.

“Definitely not because of you.”

That got a tiny smile.

Then Eli whispered, “Grant said everything would be fine if I disappeared.”

Claire went still.

“When?”

“He called the hotel.”

Daniel stood.

Claire raised a hand.

“Let him finish.”

Eli explained that Grant had not threatened him.

He had said, “None of this would be happening if the past had stayed buried.”

To a child, the difference did not matter.

Claire’s anger returned.

But this time, she used it carefully.

“Eli, listen to me. Adults are responsible for the things they say and do. You are not responsible for making our lives easier.”

He looked at her.

“Even if I cost a lot of money?”

Claire laughed through tears.

“You cost me eleven years.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“I lost eleven years with your father. I am not losing one more day with you because someone is worried about a merger.”

Eli’s eyes filled.

He let Claire hug him.

It was the first time.

When they returned to the hotel, Grant was waiting in the lobby.

Marcus moved to block him.

Eli froze.

Grant looked at the boy.

“I owe you an apology.”

Claire said, “Not here.”

Grant ignored her.

He crouched several feet from Eli.

“I said something cruel because I was scared. That was wrong.”

Eli said nothing.

Grant stood.

Then he handed Claire a flash drive.

“What is this?”

“Pike’s private archive.”

Claire stared.

“Where did you get it?”

“Dad’s safe.”

“What’s on it?”

Grant looked at Daniel.

“Everything.”

That night, they opened the files.

Buried among old contracts was an audio recording.

Everett Whitmore and Owen Pike.

The date was three days before Adam’s crash.

Pike said, “If the boy talks, we all lose.”

May you like

Everett’s recorded voice answered from years beyond the grave.

“Then make sure he never gets the chance.”
