The Hearing

Chapter 17 - The Hearing

The final guardianship hearing took place six weeks later.

By then, Owen Pike had pleaded guilty to multiple charges.

The investigation into Everett’s estate had expanded.

The Whitmore merger had been canceled.

The company had not collapsed.

It had gotten smaller.

Cleaner.

More honest.

Claire and Daniel entered the courtroom together.

They were not a couple.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

That was not the point.

They had learned not to force relationships into shapes that made other people comfortable.

Eli sat between them.

The judge reviewed the petition.

Claire was asking to become Eli’s legal guardian.

Daniel was asking for shared family visitation and eventual co-guardianship if Eli wanted it.

Eli’s court-appointed advocate had interviewed him several times.

The judge looked over her glasses.

“Eli, do you understand what is happening today?”

“Yes.”

“What do you want?”

Eli looked at Claire.

Then Daniel.

Then Grant, sitting in the back.

“I want to live with Claire.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“And Daniel?”

“I want him to teach me how to fix cars.”

Daniel smiled.

The judge nodded.

“And Mr. Whitmore?”

Eli looked at Grant.

“He’s still working on the list.”

The courtroom laughed.

Even Grant.

The judge granted Claire permanent guardianship.

Outside, reporters waited.

This time, Eli asked to speak.

Claire almost said no.

Then she remembered Adam’s letter.

Don’t make him feel like a secret.

Eli stepped to the microphone.

“My name is Eli Bennett.”

The crowd quieted.

“Nora Bennett was my family. Adam Bennett was my dad. Rachel Bennett was my mom.”

He looked at Claire.

“Claire is my grandma.”

Then Daniel.

“Daniel is my grandpa.”

Then he looked at the cameras.

“And I’m not changing my name.”

Claire smiled through tears.

The next morning, legal papers arrived from the trust.

Eli could keep Bennett.

No one had challenged it.

But there was another document.

A property deed.

Adam had inherited a small house from his adoptive parents.

It had been seized years earlier for unpaid taxes.

The buyer was a shell company.

Owned by the Whitmore family trust.

Grant had signed the purchase.

Claire drove to his office.

“You took his house too?”

Grant looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know it was his.”

“Give it back.”

“I already did.”

Claire stopped.

Grant slid the signed deed across the desk.

Transferred to Eli Bennett.

No conditions.

No press release.

No tax benefit.

Claire looked at him.

“Why?”

Grant glanced at the list taped beside his computer.

Tell the truth.

Stop being mean when you’re scared.

Help fix something else.

May you like

He gave a small smile.

“I’m working on it.”
