Owen's Empty Bed

Chapter 09 - Owen's Empty Bed

Bringing Eli home did not happen immediately.

There were evaluations.

Court hearings.

Temporary placement arrangements.

Rules Claire hated but understood.

Three weeks after the DNA confirmation, Eli was finally permitted an extended overnight visit.

Claire prepared his old bedroom.

Then she changed her mind.

The room had been frozen in memory for too long.

She let Eli choose.

He picked gray walls.

A desk near the window.

A Chicago Bears blanket.

And no photographs from before his disappearance.

“Not yet,” he said.

Claire respected that.

Owen did not understand.

“But they’re your pictures.”

“They’re Noah’s.”

“You are Noah.”

Eli's jaw tightened.

“My name is Eli.”

Owen stormed out.

That night Claire found him under his blanket crying.

“You love him more.”

The words hit her harder than expected.

She sat beside him.

“No.”

“You missed him for seven years.”

“That doesn't mean I loved you for fewer years.”

Owen wiped his face.

“You look at him different.”

Claire had no defense.

Because it was true.

She watched Eli constantly.

Was he eating?

Sleeping?

Breathing?

Would he still be there if she turned away?

Claire pulled Owen close.

“I am scared.”

“Of what?”

“Losing him again.”

Owen whispered, “What about losing me?”

Claire held him tighter.

That was the night she realized finding one son did not magically repair her family.

It had simply revealed every crack.

At 2:13 a.m., Claire woke to the sound of the front door.

She ran downstairs.

Open.

Eli was gone.

His new coat remained on the hook.

So did his shoes.

Claire screamed his name.

Daniel checked the yard.

Owen woke and came running.

Then he noticed something on Eli’s bed.

A folded piece of paper.

Three words.

I ruin families.

Claire stared at the handwriting.

Before she could move, Owen grabbed his camel coat.

“Where are you going?”

“I know where he is.”

Claire looked at him.

“How?”

May you like

Owen opened the door.

“The place where I found him.”
