The Hearing

Chapter 17 - The Hearing

Thomas Reed was charged.

Evelyn Bennett was formally indicted for obstruction, fraud and conspiracy related to the concealment of Noah's identity.

The custody hearing came six weeks later.

By then, Eli had begun therapy.

Owen had too.

So had Claire.

Daniel attended separately.

The judge asked Eli one question privately.

What name did he want?

When Eli returned, Claire waited.

The judge smiled gently.

“The child has requested to be known legally as Noah Elias Bennett.”

Claire began crying.

Eli rolled his eyes.

“You cry a lot.”

“I'm working on it.”

He looked at Daniel.

The smile disappeared.

After court, Daniel approached carefully.

“I like the name.”

Eli shrugged.

“It was mine first.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Eli studied him.

“Why didn't you save me?”

Claire held her breath.

Daniel did not offer an excuse.

“I was a coward.”

Eli seemed surprised.

Daniel continued.

“I was afraid of losing your mother. Afraid of losing my company. Afraid of finding out I'd failed you.”

“You did fail me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty changed something.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something.

Daniel knelt.

“I cannot fix those years.”

Eli's eyes filled.

“No.”

“But I can spend the rest of my life telling you the truth.”

Eli looked at Claire.

She did not guide him.

This choice belonged to him.

Finally, Eli said, “You can come to my soccer game Saturday.”

Daniel's face crumpled.

“Okay.”

“But don't act like my dad.”

Daniel swallowed.

“What should I act like?”

“Someone trying.”

Daniel nodded.

“I can do that.”

Claire watched him walk away.

For the first time, she saw a man without the Bennett name holding him upright.

Just Daniel.

Flawed.

Ashamed.

Trying.

Then Alvarez approached Claire.

“There is one more thing.”

Claire groaned.

“I officially hate that sentence.”

The detective smiled.

“This one may be good.”

She handed Claire a sealed document.

It contained the final disposition of Lydia's estate.

A trust had been created before her death.

The beneficiary was Noah Bennett.

Claire looked at the amount.

Then she looked at Eli.

The boy who had been hungry in an alley was now wealthy.

But when she told him, his reaction was not what anyone expected.

He said, “Can we use it for kids who are still outside?”
