The Signature That Stole Seven Years

Chapter 14 - The Signature That Stole Seven Years
The forgery changed everything.
Not legally.
Emotionally.
Claire sat across from Daniel in Alvarez's office.
He looked ten years older.
“You witnessed this?”
“I didn't see the signature happen.”
“Your name is there.”
“My mother told me it was paperwork proving June would cooperate.”
“And you signed without reading?”
Daniel's silence answered.
Claire felt nothing.
That frightened her more than anger.
For weeks she had been furious.
Now she was tired.
“You always trusted the easiest truth.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know.”
“No. You don't.”
Claire slid the document toward him.
“You trusted your mother because questioning her would cost you something.”
He looked at her.
“You trusted Lydia wasn't dangerous because admitting it would embarrass your family.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“You trusted Noah was probably gone because continuing to search hurt too much.”
Daniel whispered, “I deserve that.”
“This isn't about what you deserve.”
Claire stood.
“It’s about what our sons deserved.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“Owen won't answer my calls.”
“He's angry.”
“And Eli?”
Claire hesitated.
“He asks where you are.”
Hope appeared on Daniel's face.
“Don't.”
It disappeared.
Claire continued.
“He asks because he wants to understand you.”
Daniel nodded.
“I want to explain.”
“You don't get to explain until you're ready to tell the whole truth.”
“There is no more.”
Claire looked at him.
Daniel held her gaze.
Then he broke.
“There is.”
Of course there was.
He reached into his coat.
A voicemail recording.
Three years earlier.
June's voice.
Weak.
Terrified.
Daniel, your son is alive. Evelyn knows where we are. She says if I contact Claire, she'll make sure I lose Eli forever.
Claire listened twice.
Then a third time.
She handed back the phone.
“You heard this?”
“Yes.”
“And did nothing?”
“I confronted my mother.”
“What did she say?”
“That June was unstable. That the recording was manipulation.”
“And you believed her.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Claire stared at him.
“Then why?”
His voice broke.
“Because I was afraid that if Noah came home, you'd find out I had stopped looking.”
Claire finally understood.
Not money.
Not the company.
Not Evelyn.
Shame.
Daniel had allowed fear of being exposed as a failed father to keep him from becoming a better one.
Claire picked up her coat.
“Tell Alvarez everything.”
“Claire.”
She stopped.
“I don't know whether I will ever forgive you.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“But if you love those boys, start telling the truth even when it costs you everything.”
May you like
For the first time in years, Daniel did.
And it cost him exactly that.
