The Half Sandwich Project

Chapter 18 - The Half Sandwich Project

The idea began at the kitchen table.

Owen named it.

The Half Sandwich Project.

Eli hated the name.

Then loved it.

The trust money could not all be used immediately, but Claire worked with attorneys to create a foundation.

Food.

Temporary housing.

Legal help for undocumented and unidentified children.

Support for families searching for missing kids.

Daniel donated his severance package anonymously.

Claire found out anyway.

She did not thank him.

Not at first.

Some wounds needed time.

Months passed.

Daniel attended soccer games.

He sat in the back.

He never pushed.

When Eli scored his first goal, he looked toward the sidelines.

Claire was there.

Owen was screaming.

Daniel stood behind them.

Eli pointed at all three.

Later, he allowed Daniel to drive him home.

Claire watched the car leave.

Something loosened inside her.

Not everything broken should be repaired.

But some things could be rebuilt differently.

That winter, Evelyn's case ended with a plea agreement.

Claire did not attend sentencing.

Daniel did.

Afterward, he visited the house.

“My mother asked me to tell you she's sorry.”

Claire looked at him.

“Is she?”

“I don't know.”

“Thank you for saying that.”

Daniel nodded.

It was not reconciliation.

But it was respectful.

Before leaving, he handed Claire a box.

Inside was her wedding ring.

She looked at him.

“I found it in the kitchen drawer after I moved out.”

“I know.”

“I kept it safe.”

Claire closed the box.

“Daniel.”

He looked prepared for rejection.

“I’m not ready.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“But dinner Sunday.”

Hope crossed his face.

“With the boys?”

“Yes.”

“As what?”

Claire almost smiled.

“Someone trying.”

Daniel laughed softly.

It was the first time she had heard him laugh in nearly a year.

Then Eli appeared in the hallway.

“Dad?”

Daniel froze.

So did Claire.

Eli looked annoyed.

“Are you coming Sunday or not?”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Eli walked away.

Daniel stood there speechless.

Claire touched his arm.

“Don't make him regret it.”

Daniel shook his head.

May you like

“I won't.”

This time, Claire believed he understood what the promise cost.
