The Bail Hearing

Chapter 05 - The Bail Hearing

The Cook County Courthouse was packed to capacity the following morning at nine AM.

Reporters, television camera crews, and high-society bloggers filled the hallway outside Courtroom 402. News of the dramatic arrest at the Whitmore Hotel wedding had exploded across social media overnight, trending as the top story in the country.

Inside the courtroom, Preston sat at the defense table wearing a orange county jail jumpsuit, his wrists handcuffed to his waist belt. His hair was messy, his face pale and sunken, all his polished arrogance completely shattered after spending twelve hours in a holding cell.

Sitting right behind him in the front gallery were my parents, Richard and Eleanor, along with Victoria and her wealthy father, Arthur Vance (no relation to my attorney, Marcus Vance).

My parents were surrounded by four high-priced criminal defense lawyers, frantically whispering strategies.

The heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom opened.

I walked inside, wearing a tailored black suit, my hair pulled back cleanly, carrying my legal folder. Walking beside me was Marcus Vance, his presence instantly causing a hush to fall over the room.

My father, Richard, jumped up from his seat, glaring at me with violent hatred.

“Evelyn!” Richard hissed loudly as I passed his row. “You bring Marcus Vance into this?! Are you completely out of your mind?! Call off this prosecution right now!”

I didn't even turn my head to look at him. I walked straight to the prosecution table and sat down beside the State Attorney.

Judge Sarah Montgomery, a stern, grey-haired woman known for her zero-tolerance stance on violent crimes, stepped up to the bench and slammed her gavel down.

BANG!

“Court is in session,” Judge Montgomery declared, looking over her glasses at the defense table. “We are here for the bail hearing of Preston Sterling, charged with felony child abuse, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and filing a false police report.”

Preston’s lead attorney, a slick man named Donald Croft, stood up immediately.

“Your Honor!” Croft announced loudly. “My client is a renowned orthopedic surgeon with zero prior criminal record. This entire incident was a tragic family misunderstanding involving an unstable sister who is seeking financial leverage! We request immediate release on personal recognizance!”

Judge Montgomery looked at Marcus Vance. “Mr. Vance, you are representing the victim’s mother?”

“I am, Your Honor,” Vance stood up smoothly, his voice echoing with absolute authority through the courtroom. “And we strongly object to bail. Mr. Sterling did not make a 'mistake.' He and his co-conspirators systematically framed an eight-year-old child, planted stolen property, and then violently struck that child in the head with a twenty-pound oak board.”

Vance tapped a button on his laptop, projecting the 4K hotel security footage onto the large wall screens inside the courtroom.

The entire courtroom watched in dead silence as the video played again—showing Victoria planting the phone, Preston framing Sophie, and Preston swinging the heavy wooden board directly into my daughter’s head.

Judge Montgomery’s face turned from stern to utterly furious as she watched the video.

“Furthermore, Your Honor,” Vance added, submitting a second document. “We have submitted evidence showing the defendant attempted to intimidate the victim’s mother inside the hospital last night through private investigators.”

Preston’s lawyer, Croft, went completely pale. “Your Honor, that is unverified—”

“SILENCE!” Judge Montgomery slammed her gavel down so hard the wooden block cracked!

She glared down at Preston with absolute, unyielding disgust.

“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Montgomery spat, her voice shaking with rage. “You are a medical doctor who took an oath to do no harm, yet I just watched you execute a brutal, cowardly attack on an eight-year-old child over a planted cell phone.”

She raised her gavel. “Bail is DENIED. The defendant will remain in custody at the Cook County Department of Corrections until trial!”

BANG!

Preston thrashed wildly in his handcuffs, screaming hysterically as court officers grabbed his arms. “DAD! MOM! DO SOMETHING! DON'T LET THEM LOCK ME UP! EVELYN, YOU BITCH! I’LL KILL YOU!”

My mother collapsed into her husband’s arms, weeping uncontrollably as their golden son was dragged out through the side door in chains.

My father stood up, stepping toward me with his face twisted in pure, unbridled malice. “You think this is over, Evelyn?! You just destroyed your brother! You will never get a single penny from this family!”

I stood up, adjusting my jacket, looking directly into my father’s eyes with a cold, victorious smile.

“Actually, Dad,” I said softly, sliding a legal notice across the railing into his hand. “The emergency board meeting for Sterling Medical Corporation is scheduled for 2:00 PM today. And as majority shareholder, my first order of business is firing you.”
