The Mask Crumbles

Chapter 02 - The Mask Crumbles

A collective, horrific gasp exploded through the grand ballroom. The video left zero room for doubt, zero room for excuses, and zero room for my family’s toxic lies.

Guests stared at Preston and Victoria in absolute horror. Several people pulled out their phones, recording the tablet screen, while Victoria clutched her pearl necklace, her face turning as white as her wedding gown.

“That... that video is a deepfake!” Victoria shrieked, stepping back into her father’s arms. “Someone hacked the hotel system! Preston and I would never do that!”

Sergeant Miller’s jaw was locked tightly. He didn't say another word. He stepped past my mother, unclipped his steel handcuffs from his belt, and grabbed Preston by his wrists.

“Preston Sterling, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and filing a false police report,” Sergeant Miller announced firmly.

“Get your filthy hands off me!” Preston screamed, thrashing wildly as the steel cuffs snapped onto his wrists with a heavy metallic click. “Do you know who my father is?! My father is Richard Sterling! He owns three medical clinics in this state! You will lose your job for this!”

“Dad! Do something!” Victoria cried out to her father, a wealthy real estate developer. “Call the Mayor!”

My father stepped in front of Sergeant Miller, his face bright red with rage. “Officer, listen to me very carefully! My son is the chief orthopedic surgeon at Northwestern! If you take him to jail, you will ruin his medical career and our family name!”

“Your son just put an eight-year-old child in an ambulance, Mr. Sterling,” Sergeant Miller replied with absolute coldness. “Move out of the way, or you will be arrested for obstruction of justice.”

My mother ran to my side, her cold, fake posture dissolving into hysterical weeping—not for her injured granddaughter, but for her golden son.

“Evelyn, please!” Eleanor begged, grabbing my arm with trembling hands. “Tell the police it was a misunderstanding! Tell them you won't press charges! If Preston gets a felony record, his life is over! Think of your brother!”

I looked down at my mother’s hands on my arm—the same hands that had ignored my daughter’s blood five minutes ago.

I shoved her arm away so hard she stumbled back against the table, overturning a tray of champagne flutes that crashed loudly onto the floor.

“My daughter is in an ambulance, Eleanor,” I said, my voice dangerously quiet, heavy, and cold as ice. “And as far as I’m concerned, I don't have a brother. And I don't have parents.”

I turned on my heel and walked out of the ballroom, following the paramedics down the corridor as my brother was forced down the hallway in handcuffs, screaming curses that echoed through the quiet hotel.
