The Truth Unveiled

Chapter 07 - The Truth Unveiled

The true, horrifying scope of the conspiracy settled over the room like a suffocating blanket.

"Why?" I asked, taking a step toward Vanessa, my knuckles white as my hands clenched into fists. "Why do all of this?"

Clara stood up slowly, her body frail and thin, but her green eyes burning with a mother's fierce, unstoppable rage. "Because she wanted total control of your estate, Ethan. But more than that... she discovered that my family's offshore trust fund was legally tied to my life status. If I died outright, the tens of millions in the fund were locked in probate for a decade. But as long as I was kept 'missing' or certified as mentally incapacitated, she could manipulate the power of attorney through a shell company she created."

"And the secret visits to this house?" I asked, my blood boiling with pure fury. "Why bring her here?"

"She didn't bring me here so I could see Sophie," Clara choked out, looking at our terrified daughter with heartbreak in her eyes. "She dragged me here every time you flew out of town to force me to sign corporate asset transfer documents under threat of force. She told me that if I ever tried to escape, scream, or contact you, she would make sure Sophie suffered a fatal 'accident' at school."

Vanessa let out a sudden, dark, bitter laugh, dropping every remaining pretense of remorse or innocence. She wiped her smeared makeup away with the back of her hand, her eyes going cold, calculating, and vicious.

"You were always so ridiculously naive, Ethan," Vanessa sneered, leaning back against the counter. "You were so blinded by your pathetic grief that you handed me the keys to your entire life. I managed your finances, I ran your household, and I kept your annoying, fragile little daughter locked away so she wouldn't ruin my plans."

"You bruised my child," I said, my voice shaking with an absolute, lethal rage as I stepped closer to her.

"The little brat was becoming a liability!" Vanessa spat back without a shred of fear. "She started recognizing Clara’s voice through the pantry door! I had to teach her to keep her mouth shut!"
