The Breaking Point

Chapter 03 - The Breaking Point

Over the past two months, subtle, troubling changes had begun creeping into Sophie’s behavior. Whenever Vanessa entered a room, Sophie would instantly go silent, shrinking into the nearest corner. She had stopped asking me to read her bedtime stories. She had stopped pleading with me not to travel for business trips. She had even started locking her bedroom door from the inside every single night, sleeping with a small brass flashlight under her pillow.

I had foolishly, blindly convinced myself that there had to be a psychological explanation—that Sophie was merely acting out, struggling to process the deep emotional trauma of losing her mother, Clara, two years ago in a horrific mountain road crash.

Looking at those fresh, dark bruises now, the thick veil of self-deception was brutally ripped away.

Vanessa suddenly burst into loud, dramatic tears, covering her face with her trembling hands. “You know how impossibly difficult she’s been ever since her mother died, Ethan! I try so hard every single day to be a patient, loving mother to her, but she rejects everything I do! She scratches herself, she self-harms, she invents elaborate lies just to make you despise me!”

Sophie pulled back from my shoulder, looking up at me through her wet eyelashes. Her small voice was surprisingly steady despite her shaking frame.

“My mommy didn’t die.”

Vanessa’s loud, hysterical weeping stopped instantly, cut off like a severed wire. The sprawling kitchen fell into a suffocating, terrifying silence.

I stared down at my six-year-old daughter, my heart hammering against my ribs. “What did you just say, Sophie?”

Sophie lifted a tiny, shaking finger and pointed it directly at Vanessa’s chest. “She told me Mommy is alive.”
