The Whispered Secret

Chapter 05 - The Whispered Secret

The crystal glass Vanessa had been clutching moments ago slipped entirely from her numb, trembling fingers.

CRASH!

It shattered into a hundred jagged, sparkling shards across the hard tile floor. But before the sharp echo of breaking glass could even fade from the room, Sophie leaned up toward my ear and whispered a single sentence that made my lungs lock up completely.

“She comes here when you’re gone.”

I froze. The entire kitchen seemed to tilt on its axis.

I instantly dropped back down onto my knees in front of Sophie, taking her small shoulders in my hands. “What did you say, sweetheart? Who comes into this house?”

“Mommy,” Sophie whispered, fresh tears spilling over her rosy cheeks. “Whenever you go away on airplanes, Vanessa locks me inside the dark pantry... and then Mommy comes through the side door. They go into your study. Mommy looks so sad and sick, and Vanessa yells at her and forces her to take white envelopes.”

My mind raced at a terrifying, sickening speed. Clara—my wife who had supposedly plunged off a mountain cliff in a fiery, tragic wreck two years ago—was not only alive, but she was being brought into my own home in secret every time I left the state for business.

I stood up slowly, turning back to face Vanessa. The poised, high-society woman who had spent two years comforting me in my grief, who had helped me organize a solemn memorial service, and who was scheduled to walk down the aisle with me in three months.

“Where is she, Vanessa?” I asked, my voice dropping into a deadly, quiet growl.

Vanessa stumbled backward toward the sliding glass patio doors, her calm facade completely pulverized, replaced by pure, unadulterated terror. “Ethan... you don't understand the full picture... she was going to ruin everything we built! I was protecting us! I was protecting our future!”
