The Photograph on the Counter

Chapter 04 - The Photograph on the Counter

Vanessa’s face went completely ash-white, every single drop of color draining from her lips until she looked like a corpse standing beneath the bright LED kitchen chandeliers.

"Ethan, she's completely delusional!" Vanessa stammered, backing away until her lower back slammed hard against the edge of the kitchen island. "She's mixing up night terrors with reality! You know how mentally unstable she's been since the accident!"

Without saying a single word, I reached deep into the inner pocket of my heavy leather coat. I pulled out a worn, high-resolution photograph and placed it face-down onto the clean white marble counter between us.

“I already knew about the physical bruises, Vanessa,” I said softly, my voice devoid of any warmth. “Sophie’s school counselor called my personal line three days ago while I was in New York.”

Vanessa stared at the blank back of the photograph, her chest heaving as her breathing turned shallow and frantic.

Slowly, deliberately, I reached out with two fingers and turned the picture over. It was a clear, candid photograph of my first wife, Clara, sitting on a wooden bench in a small, quiet garden. On the back of the photo, written in dark blue ink, was a handwritten residential address located in a secluded coastal town three hours north of Los Angeles.

“I also know that you secretly visited Sophie’s mother three weeks before everyone was officially informed that she died in that car crash,” I said.

Vanessa gripped the edge of the marble island so tightly her manicured knuckles turned completely white. “That’s... that’s completely impossible. You're losing your mind, Ethan...”

“No,” I said, standing up to his full height and stepping squarely between her and my daughter. “What’s impossible is what my lead private investigator uncovered late yesterday afternoon.”

Sophie squeezed my fingers with all her strength. Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking in pure, raw panic, “Ethan, please... let me explain the whole story...”

I looked directly into her wide, terrified eyes, feeling a profound, icy contempt. “He found my first wife alive.”
