The Disappearing Safe

Chapter 02 - The Disappearing Safe

Within fifteen minutes, Blackwood Manor was completely surrounded by Victor’s elite security force. The gates were locked, the outer perimeter armed, and private medical personnel arrived via helicopter to treat baby Ethan’s sprained wrist and Lily’s bruised shoulder.

Inside the master security control room on the second floor, Victor stood over Carlo’s shoulder, staring at the bank of computer monitors displaying live feeds from every corner of the property.

“Sir,” Carlo reported, typing rapidly on his tactical terminal. “We checked the internal network logs. The camera in the living room wasn't just unplugged today. The main server hard drive was manually erased at 2:00 PM using a master administrator keycard.”

Victor’s jaw clenched tightly. “Only three people have administrator access to those servers: me, my late wife’s estate executor, and Serena.”

“There’s more, Mr. Blackwood,” Carlo said, opening a secondary file folder. “When we swept your private study upstairs, we found the heavy titanium safe behind the bookshelf had been opened using a physical bypass key.”

Victor walked briskly down the corridor to his private study.

The room was in complete disarray. Hidden behind a revolving mahogany bookshelf was his wall-mounted steel safe. The heavy door hung wide open, completely empty.

Stolen from inside were not just millions of dollars in rare bearer bonds, but something far more valuable and dangerous: the original, un-redacted research files regarding the mysterious car accident that had claimed the life of Victor’s late wife, Clara, two years ago.

Victor stared into the empty vault, his hands trembling with absolute shock.

For two years, he had believed Clara’s death was a tragic brake failure on a mountain road. But looking at the empty safe, a sickening, horrifying realization crashed over him like a tidal wave.

Serena hadn't entered his life by chance at a charity gala eighteen months ago. She hadn't fallen in love with him or wanted to be a loving stepmother to Ethan.

She had been placed in his house to ensure the truth about Clara’s murder remained buried forever.

“Carlo,” Victor said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal register. “Where is Serena right now?”

“She’s being held in the primary holding room downstairs under guard, sir,” Carlo answered.

“Bring her to my study,” Victor commanded. “Now.”
