The Father's Sin

Chapter 08 - The Father's Sin
The truth was uglier than Caleb expected.
Jonathan Mercer had secretly replaced approved construction materials with cheaper alternatives.
Richard Reed discovered the scheme.
But instead of exposing him, Richard demanded a share.
Luke found both men's signatures.
He planned to go to federal investigators.
Three days later, he died.
Caleb watched Luke's video six times.
There was no proof either man deliberately caused the collapse.
But both knew the building was unsafe.
Both allowed workers onto the site.
Twenty-three people were injured.
Luke was killed.
Richard had spent nine years protecting the secret.
Caleb's father had gone to his grave respected.
Mara entered quietly.
“You found it.”
Caleb looked at her.
“You knew?”
“Not all of it.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Would you have believed me?”
He wanted to say yes.
But nine years ago, Caleb worshiped his father.
The answer was no.
Mara sat across from him.
“I was going to testify.”
“Then Richard threatened Eli?”
She nodded.
Caleb looked toward the sleeping child upstairs.
He understood her fear.
But understanding did not erase nine lost years.
“You could have trusted me.”
Mara's eyes filled.
“I was twenty-four, pregnant, alone, and terrified.”
Caleb said nothing.
Mara stood.
“I made mistakes.”
She looked at him.
“But leaving you was the hardest thing I've ever done.”
Before Caleb could answer, Vanessa called.
She had discovered her father was moving millions of dollars overseas.
And one more thing.
Richard had ordered every paper record connected to the old construction project destroyed.
Tomorrow morning.
Caleb looked at Luke's flash drive.
