Luke's Birthday

Chapter 19 - Luke's Birthday
On what would have been Luke Mercer's thirty-ninth birthday, Caleb took Eli to his father's grave.
Mara came too.
Eleanor stood a few feet away.
For years, the Mercer family had gathered there carrying guilt.
That morning, they carried something else.
Truth.
Eli placed a baseball on the grave.
“Uncle Caleb says you had a terrible fastball.”
Caleb protested.
“I said inconsistent.”
Eli smiled.
Mara laughed.
Even Eleanor did.
It was strange how healing sometimes arrived.
Not with dramatic speeches.
But with ordinary laughter in a place once filled only with grief.
Eleanor approached Mara.
“I failed you.”
Mara looked at her.
“Yes.”
Eleanor nodded through tears.
“I know.”
Mara did not forgive her instantly.
Real forgiveness rarely worked that way.
But she allowed Eleanor to hug Eli.
It was a beginning.
As they walked away, Eli ran ahead.
Caleb reached for Mara's hand.
She took it.
Eli turned around.
“Are you two getting married or what?”
Mara nearly choked.
Caleb laughed.
“Keep walking.”
Eli grinned.
Caleb looked at Mara.
She was smiling too.

For the first time, the idea of another wedding did not feel like a trap.
It felt like a choice.
