The Hidden Heir

Chapter 11 - The Hidden Heir
The paperwork was authentic.
Luke had signed it shortly before his death.
He knew Mara was pregnant.
He simply never had the chance to tell her.
Eli was the legal beneficiary of everything Luke owned.
For nine years, those shares had been controlled by a trust.
Caleb was the temporary trustee.
But when Eli's existence became legally recognized, control would eventually pass to him.
Richard's merger depended on those shares.
Without them, Reed Development was financially vulnerable.
Caleb finally saw the entire plan.
Richard had pushed Vanessa toward him.
Encouraged their relationship.
Promoted the marriage.
Prepared a forged agreement.
A wedding was supposed to give Richard access to Mercer Industries.
Then a boy in a worn hoodie walked onto the church steps and destroyed nine years of planning.
Mara listened quietly.
“So what happens now?”
“Eli gets what belongs to him.”
“No.”
Caleb stared at her.
Mara shook her head.
“I don't want millions.”
“It isn't yours.”
She looked toward her son.
“That money will put a target on him.”
“Not anymore.”
“You can't promise that.”
Caleb stepped closer.
“I can promise he won't face it alone.”
Mara's expression softened.
For the first time, Caleb saw a glimpse of the woman he remembered.
Then Eli entered.
“Are we in trouble?”
Mara immediately smiled.
“No, sweetheart.”
Eli looked at Caleb.
“Are you going to leave?”
The question caught him off guard.
Caleb crouched.
“Why would you think that?”
“People always do.”
Caleb looked at Mara.
Then back at Eli.
“I'm not going anywhere.”

It was the first promise Caleb had made in years that actually frightened him.
Because this one mattered.
