The Courtroom

Chapter 14 - The Courtroom
Richard's lawyers arrived with twelve boxes.
Caleb's arrived with one letter.
The hearing lasted five hours.
Richard's team attacked Mara's character.
Her finances.
Her employment history.
Her decision to disappear.
Then Luke's letter was introduced.
The courtroom changed.
A handwriting expert confirmed it.
The trust documents matched.
DNA evidence confirmed Eli was Luke's son.
Eleanor testified that Jonathan Mercer had known about the pregnancy.
Then Vanessa took the stand.
Richard stared at his daughter.
She refused to look away.
She described the forged merger agreement.
The secret files.
The financial manipulation.
Finally, the recording played.
Richard's own voice filled the courtroom.
“I did not kill Luke!”
His attorney objected.
Too late.
The judge ruled that Eli's inheritance claim could proceed.
Richard's control over the disputed shares was frozen.
Federal investigators waited outside the courthouse.
For the first time in decades, Richard Reed walked past cameras without speaking.
Vanessa watched her father leave.
Caleb approached her.
“You did the right thing.”
She smiled sadly.
“It cost me my father.”
“No.”
Caleb shook his head.
“He made that choice long before today.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“And us?”
There it was.
The question they had avoided.
Caleb cared about her.
Maybe part of him always would.
But love could not survive inside a plan built by someone else.
“I think we both deserve to know who we are without him deciding for us.”
Vanessa nodded.

This time, when she cried, she also smiled.
“I think that's the first honest thing about our wedding.”
