Chapter 6

The trial did not solve everything.

Good.

Trials rarely do.

Robert Kane was convicted on conspiracy, attempted unlawful detention, obstruction, and fraud-related counts.

The jury did not convict on attempted murder.

Evidence of fatal contingency was too indirect.

That mattered.

Gerald Knox pled to obstruction and document tampering.

Michael Knox pled to unlawful restraint-related charges.

The bartender cooperated and received reduced sentence.

Dr. Shaw faced licensing discipline, not prison.

Daniel was charged with conspiracy but accepted plea on lesser offense related to fraudulent succession documents.

Why lesser?

Because evidence showed he opposed violence and cooperated before arrests.

Still not innocent.

Good.

My father, Thomas Vale, faced professional discipline and obstruction charges for concealing Anna’s codicil and using me as unwitting participant.

He avoided prison through cooperation and age.

Some people called that privilege.

Maybe.

I called it complicated.

I did not defend him.

Then Marco.

Old warrants resolved.

He admitted false identity, obstruction, use of another man’s death record.

Probation.

Civil penalties.

No hero immunity.

Good.

He returned legally from dead.

New birth certificate? No, restored identity order.

Passport.

Taxes.

Boring bureaucracy.

He complained endlessly.

Luca loved it.

“Dead men don’t file taxes.”

Marco said:

“Maybe I should stay dead.”

Normal.

Then employee foundation settlement.

Nineteen percent of Moretti Holdings.

Not control.

Two board seats.

Independent benefits committee.

Worker-elected trustees.

No family veto over foundation.

Luca retained ownership.

Marco smaller restored share.

Anna’s branch rights extinguished after foundation transfer.

My role ended.

Good.

I signed release.

Not because forced.

Independent lawyer.

My choice.

No heir.

No succession target.

Just Elena Vale.

That felt like freedom.

Then my father asked to meet.

I said no for six months.

Then yes.

Park bench.

Daylight.

No legal files.

He looked older.

“I thought I could keep you safe by knowing more than you.”

I stared.

“That was never safety.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Your mother warned me.”

Of course.

Anna had told him never use family secrecy as protection.

He did anyway.

Patterns.

Then he gave me one letter.

From my mother.

Not secret corporate document.

Personal.

Elena—

If anyone ever tells you your blood determines your duty, leave.

That was all I needed.

I cried.

Then kept it.

Private.

Good.

Luca did not ask to see.

Growth.

Then Daniel.

He moved to Seattle after sentence.

No contact for two years.

Sent one letter.

I did not open.

My choice.

Later burned unopened.

Also choice.

Then my career.

I had been museum curator before marriage? We need set. We can establish now maybe Elena worked in architectural conservation. Fine.

I returned to work at city preservation office.

People expected me to become Moretti board activist.

No.

I restored buildings.

That was mine.

One project:

old Bellmont Hotel façade.

I almost declined.

Then accepted.

Not because healing story.

Because I was good at job.

Good.

Room 814 became ordinary hotel room after evidence release.

I never visited.

No need.

Then Luca and I developed something unexpected.

Not romance yet.

Friendship.

Coffee after hearings.

Texts about legal nonsense.

He never asked me to join company.

Good.

Marco teased.

I ignored.

Then one day Luca asked:

“Do you regret not marrying Daniel?”

I stared.

“Are you serious?”

“Fair.”

Then:

“Do you regret trusting him?”

“Yes.”

Good.

No lesson that trust itself was wrong.

He nodded.

“I regret trusting my father.”

“Same.”

Family.

Different.

Then Price retired? Not yet maybe later.

She closed case eventually.

At final meeting, she said:

“The danger was not one succession clause.”

“What was it?”

“Too many people believed private control was safer than open process.”

Yes.

That was whole story.

Then foundation’s first annual report.

Complaints up.

Board nervous.

Independent review showed workers trusted reporting more.

Visibility can look worse before improvement.

Same lesson.

Then Marco attended first board meeting alive.

Worker trustee disagreed with him.

Publicly.

He looked offended.

Luca laughed.

“This is why we brought you back.”

Marco flipped him off under table.

Normal.

Good.

No one died.

No one vanished.

No wedding required.

That felt almost radical.

The employee foundation’s two board seats were elected by workers, not appointed by Luca. Independence would have meant little otherwise.

Elena’s release of succession rights was reviewed by separate counsel paid from a neutral court fund, not Moretti money.

Thomas Vale’s discipline included restrictions on trust and estate practice. He could not simply return to the exact work he had abused.

Marco’s first tax return after legal restoration became a family joke. Luca sent him a pen labeled WELCOME BACK TO LIFE.

Elena’s preservation job gave her a life where old materials mattered without every old thing becoming a secret.

The foundation’s first complaint increase was studied before interpretation. Better reporting, not more abuse, explained much of the rise.

Years later, Elena would connect this stage to safeguard 7: succession rules had to be public, independent counsel had to be truly independent, and no person's marriage, health, or bloodline could be used as a private control switch.
