Chapter 4

Nobody rushed to Warehouse Twelve.

That was Luca’s instinct.

Price stopped him.

Good.

Federal agents went first.

No private Moretti convoy.

No family war.

The warehouse stood on the river.

Three floors.

Broken windows.

Old loading cranes.

Power somehow active.

Thermal scan found three people.

One moving.

Two stationary.

Entry.

First stationary person:

Marco Moretti.

Alive.

Handcuffed to chair.

Bruised.

Conscious.

Second:

Robert Kane.

Senator.

Sixty-eight.

Gun on floor nearby.

Wound in shoulder.

Alive.

Moving person:

Gerald Knox.

Wait.

Gerald had been hospitalized.

No.

Different man.

Face similar.

His brother.

Michael Knox.

Former federal marshal.

Worked private security for Kane.

Another hidden actor.

Price’s team arrested him.

No shots.

Good.

Then what happened between Kane and Marco?

Kane claimed Marco attacked him.

Marco claimed Kane tried to burn records.

Evidence:

Accelerant.

Destroyed files.

Surveillance.

Need verify.

Not dramatic certainty.

Then the archive.

Warehouse Twelve contained original succession documents.

Old trust minutes.

Carlo Moretti.

Senator Kane.

Thomas Vale.

Leonard Voss.

Gerald Knox.

Marco.

Names everywhere.

Some as counsel.

Some witnesses.

Some beneficiaries.

No clean family.

The 2006 succession rewrite had one purpose:

prevent hostile takeover if Moretti leadership died suddenly.

But later amendments turned it into private leverage.

Blood descendants.

Spouses.

Interim voting rights.

Death triggers.

Emergency trustees.

A corporate constitution built around catastrophe.

People started creating catastrophe.

That was the poison.

Then Anna’s codicil.

The copy in Daniel’s jacket was authentic.

She signed it five years before death.

Employee foundation.

Why?

She wanted her branch removed from family succession.

Good.

Then another document.

MARCO MORETTI — WAIVER.

Signed eight years ago.

After his “death.”

He too had assigned his succession rights to same employee foundation.

So if Luca died—

and Marco was legally restored—

his rights would not go to Kane either.

The conspiracy had been doomed once both hidden documents surfaced.

Then why continue with Elena marriage?

Because Kane did not know Marco had signed waiver.

Marco kept it secret.

Again.

Secrets fighting secrets.

Then Luca asked Marco:

“Why didn’t you file it?”

Marco looked exhausted.

“Because filing meant proving I was alive.”

“Good.”

“I wasn’t ready.”

“Then people used Elena.”

“I know.”

There.

Marco’s fear had consequences.

Then Robert Kane.

Arrested.

He asked for counsel.

No confession.

Good.

His phone contained encrypted messages.

Some to Gerald.

Some to Thomas.

Some to Daniel.

Daniel’s messages mattered.

Most ordinary.

Wedding logistics.

Legal plan.

One message from Kane:

AFTER CEREMONY, KEEP ELENA AT BELLMONT UNTIL BOARD VOTE.

Daniel replied:

NO.

Another:

SHE WILL NOT BE PART OF THIS.

Good.

Then Kane:

YOU ALREADY MADE HER PART OF IT.

Daniel did not reply.

So Daniel knew enough to object late.

Not enough to be innocent.

He had accepted marriage strategy before rejecting death/abduction.

Complicated.

Then one message to Thomas.

YOUR DAUGHTER WILL BE SAFE IF SHE FOLLOWS THROUGH.

Thomas replied:

SHE IS NOT COLLATERAL.

Kane:

SHE IS THE ASSET.

There.

Ugly.

Thomas had been resisting at least then.

Still used me.

Then one message to Marco.

Unknown if delivered.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.

Marco smiled bitterly.

“Classic Bob.”

Luca stared.

“You knew him well?”

Too well.

Marco admitted he had worked with Kane years earlier.

Before disappearance.

Helped design some succession contingencies.

No hero.

Again.

He thought governance plan would stabilize company.

Then realized it could incentivize deaths and marriages.

Tried to unwind.

Carlo resisted.

Then boating incident.

Was Kane responsible?

Maybe.

Boat fuel line tampered.

No proof who.

Carlo helped Marco fake death afterward.

Why?

Guilt.

Fear.

Need to protect him.

Then Carlo later signed reform amendments.

Never filed.

Died.

Secrets.

Then my father.

Thomas Vale.

He was arrested? Not yet.

Price interviewed.

His role:

He hid Anna identity.

Sealed codicil.

Joined Kane meetings.

Allowed wedding.

But he also collected evidence and warned Marco.

Could still face obstruction.

He knew.

I asked him:

“Would you do it again?”

He said:

“No.”

“Because plan failed?”

“Because I saw you at altar.”

Too late.

But something.

I did not forgive.

Good.

Then the wedding.

Legally no marriage.

Good.

Daniel moved out of shared apartment before I returned.

Left note.

Not asking forgiveness.

I read later.

“I loved you and let that become an excuse to believe I could manage what you didn’t know.”

Good sentence.

Still harm.

Then board emergency.

Kane’s network planned vote following wedding.

Now impossible.

Employee foundation filed claims under Anna codicil and Marco waiver.

Potential combined rights:

twenty-six percent.

Huge.

Not automatic ownership.

Litigation.

Valuation.

Years.

Good.

No magical transfer.

Then Luca made choice.

He could fight foundation.

Keep family control.

Or support independent review.

He chose neutral court administration.

Not heroic.

Necessary.

Then Marco said:

“You’re giving away Dad’s company.”

Luca looked at him.

“Dad gave it away every time he treated us like signatures.”

Silence.

Good.

Then Price found one final document in warehouse.

MORETTI SUCCESSION PLAN — FINAL.

Date:

Last night.

The target event was not Luca’s death.

Not Elena’s death.

It was:

LEGAL INCAPACITY OF LUCA MORETTI.

How?

A medical declaration.

Not murder.

If Luca could be declared temporarily incompetent before board vote, Daniel as spouse-controller of Elena’s claim could move assets.

Who would sign incapacity?

A doctor.

Name:

DR. EVELYN SHAW.

Luca’s private physician.

His own doctor.

Price checked.

Dr. Shaw missing.

Again.

The assassination plan had been a distraction.

The real succession event was supposed to make Luca alive—

but legally powerless.

Warehouse Twelve records contained legitimate emergency-planning documents mixed with weaponized succession drafts. Investigators separated governance from conspiracy rather than treating every contingency as criminal.

Eric Salvi’s family received notice before the identity-swap became public. The Moretti case had already used one dead stranger for secrecy; Price refused to repeat that harm.

Marco’s waiver signature matched bank records from the same period after his staged death, corroborating that he remained alive.

Dr. Shaw’s name appeared only on later drafts, suggesting the incapacity strategy developed after the marriage plan was already underway.

Luca temporarily delegated company authority through formal board process before stepping back, preventing the investigation from becoming a corporate vacuum.

Elena’s decision to return to her own apartment rather than stay under Moretti security forced the parties to create independent protection arrangements.

Years later, Elena would connect this stage to safeguard 7: succession rules had to be public, independent counsel had to be truly independent, and no person's marriage, health, or bloodline could be used as a private control switch.
