Chapter 3

The smoke was artificial.
A diversion.
Price knew within thirty seconds.
No heat.
No flame signature.
Smoke canisters.
Then side entrance alarm.
Black SUV.
Two men in maintenance uniforms.
One carrying a medical bag.
They never reached us.
Federal agents intercepted in the corridor.
No shooting.
Good.
One ran.
Caught in parking lot.
The other surrendered.
Inside medical bag:
Sedatives.
Syringes.
A forged paramedic credential.
One dose calculated for an adult woman my size.
My stomach turned.
Not assassination in pews.
Abduction disguised as medical evacuation.
Smarter.
Then the SUV.
Registered to a shell company tied to Kane Strategic Consulting.
Daniel’s father.
There.
Not proof Daniel ordered.
Proof Kane network involved.
Daniel sat on floor of priest’s office.
He looked sick.
I did not comfort him.
Then one captured man identified Robert Kane as contractor.
Not direct employer.
Orders came through Gerald Knox.
My father’s former law partner.
Gerald was gone.
Left church during smoke.
Price issued alert.
Then my father.
Thomas Vale.
He said:
“I told Gerald the plan was over.”
That sounded bad.
“What plan?”
He stopped.
Again.
I stared.
“Dad.”
He admitted.
He had joined succession conspiracy six months earlier.
Not to help Kane.
To expose him.
At least that was his version.
Gerald approached him with proof Anna Moretti’s line could control shares.
Thomas realized I was target for marriage strategy.
Instead of telling me—
he let Daniel continue courting me.
He wanted evidence.
He thought Daniel was unaware at first.
Then realized Daniel knew some.
Still did not stop wedding.
Why?
Because Marco contacted him.
There.
Finally.
Marco Moretti had been alive for years.
Thomas knew for four months.
Marco convinced him the only way to expose Kane network was let marriage proceed until final documents were signed.
Not vows.
Documents before ceremony.
What documents?
Prenuptial trust acknowledgment.
I had signed one week earlier.
I thought it protected my assets.
It actually recognized my status as Anna Moretti’s daughter.
My father’s firm drafted.
I stared at him.
“You had me sign my bloodline into a trust without telling me.”
He said:
“Yes.”
No excuse.
Good.
Then where was Marco?
Unknown.
He never met Thomas physically.
Encrypted calls.
Documents.
Proof.
Maybe not Marco.
Could be impersonation.
Need verify.
Then my mother’s old records.
Price searched sealed probate files.
One codicil.
Anna Vale.
If Elena ever becomes subject to Moretti succession claim, all rights are to be assigned to independent employee foundation.
My mother anticipated this.
She had tried to neutralize me as an heir.
Why wasn’t codicil enforced?
Thomas had sealed it.
Why?
He claimed Moretti lawyers would contest and drag me in.
Maybe.
Also succession planners needed my claim active.
By hiding codicil, he made me usable.
Again.
Protection as control.
Then Luca said:
“Unseal it.”
Thomas looked at him.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because original is gone.”
Silence.
Who had it?
Gerald Knox.
Of course.
He took it two months ago.
Said he needed authentication.
Never returned.
Then Daniel’s father, Senator Kane, apparently planned to destroy it.
Without codicil, my rights remained personal.
Marriage mattered.
With codicil, inheritance would bypass Daniel entirely into employee foundation.
The codicil could kill the plan without killing anyone.
So my mother’s document became most important evidence.
Where was Gerald?
Traffic cameras found his car near Bellmont Hotel.
Then abandoned.
One security camera caught him entering underground garage carrying leather case.
No exit.
Price searched hotel again.
Parking level.
One service room.
Gerald found unconscious.
Alive.
Sedated.
Leather case missing.
He woke hours later.
Said Robert Kane attacked him.
Why?
Because Gerald had switched sides.
He had taken Anna’s codicil and planned to give it to Elena after wedding.
Too late maybe.
But reason.
Then who had case now?
Kane.
Senator missing.
Dangerous.
Then Gerald admitted another thing.
Marco was real.
He met him.
Where?
Three weeks ago.
At a diner in Indiana.
Proof?
Photograph.
Fingerprint on glass.
DNA from napkin? Weird but maybe recovered by investigator.
Price verified fingerprint against Marco’s military records.
Match.
Marco alive.
Nine years.
Why hidden?
He had been investigating succession network after discovering Carlo Moretti and Senator Kane had secretly rewritten trust governance.
Marco confronted Carlo.
Then boating “accident.”
He survived.
Carlo helped him disappear after guilt.
Again.
Father who causes then protects.
Marco spent years collecting records.
Why not return after Carlo died?
Because Kane remained powerful.
And because Marco himself had participated in early trust manipulation.
No hero.
Good.
Then Price traced one encrypted relay.
Same as message at church.
Origin bounced.
Final physical server?
A public library in Gary.
Camera.
Man using terminal.
Marco.
Recent.
Two days ago.
Alive.
Then another message arrived to Luca.
SHE IS SAFE FOR NOW.
Price looked at Elena.
No.
Message continued:
KANE HAS THE CODICIL.
DO NOT LET DANIEL LEAVE.
Daniel stood.
“What?”
Then:
HE HAS THE SECOND COPY.
Everyone turned to him.
Daniel’s face went blank.
“What second copy?”
Price searched his wedding jacket with consent? Daniel hesitated then agreed.
Inside lining—
one folded document.
He stared.
“I didn’t put that there.”
Original-looking codicil.
Anna’s signature.
Notary.
My mother’s final instruction.
My inheritance rights to employee foundation.
The thing that made killing me useless.
Someone had hidden it on Daniel before ceremony.
Who?
Marco?
Gerald?
My father?
Then Daniel whispered:
“My dad gave me this jacket.”
There.
Robert Kane had unknowingly—or intentionally—carried codicil into church through his own son.
Maybe he intended Daniel to destroy it after vows.
Maybe Daniel did not know.
Then Price checked ink and paper.
Likely original copy.
Enough for emergency court filing.
Codicil lodged.
My succession rights frozen.
Marriage plan collapsed.
Then Daniel asked:
“So Elena is safe?”
Price said:
“Safer.”
Not safe.
Because Kane had already ordered abduction.
Plan failure could make him more desperate.
Then Marco called.
This time on video.
Luca answered.
His brother appeared.
Older.
Scarred.
Alive.
“Elena.”
He looked at me through screen.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For using your wedding as the final trigger.”
My anger came sharp.
“You too?”
“Yes.”
“Everyone decided I could be used.”
“Yes.”
At least honest.
Then:
“Kane is going to the river.”
Luca frowned.
“Which river?”
“Warehouse Twelve.”
Old Moretti freight warehouse.
Closed.
Why?
Marco said:
“Because that’s where the succession originals are.”
Then screen shook.
He looked behind him.
“Damn.”
A car door slammed.
Video cut.
And for first time that day—
Luca looked genuinely afraid.
Not for himself.
For the brother who had stayed dead nine years to stop a plan that had now reached my altar.
Anna’s codicil had been notarized by an attorney with no Moretti affiliation, which later strengthened authentication.
Gerald’s sedation at Bellmont matched medication found in the abduction kit, linking the same operational network to both incidents.
Marco’s library-terminal footage showed no disguise beyond a baseball cap. He had been hiding in plain sight rather than living under a theatrical identity.
The second codicil copy in Daniel’s jacket was folded into an inner pocket sewn shut at the manufacturer, proving someone altered the jacket before he wore it.
Price stopped Elena from signing any emergency trust waiver at church. Nobody makes inheritance decisions during an active threat.
Thomas admitted he had expected the wedding to be interrupted before vows, though he did not know Luca would be the one to do it.
