Chapter 7

Margaret Dawson survived the crash for three days.
The sentence sat between us like another body.
Emily looked at Robert.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You let me think she died immediately.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Robert’s face tightened.
“Because Lucia asked me to.”
Luca laughed bitterly.
“My mother again.”
Robert looked at him.
“She was trying to keep Margaret alive long enough to testify.”
“Against you?”
“Yes.”
Good.
At least he admitted it.
I stared at the photograph of my mother holding me as a baby.
Claire Hale.
The name looked wrong.
Dawson felt like mine.
Maybe because names become real through living, not paperwork.
Luca looked at Robert.
“What happened during those three days?”
He swallowed.
“Margaret recorded everything.”
“Where?”
“Lucia took the tapes.”
“Switzerland?”
“Probably.”
Sebastian Hale had Lucia now.
Maybe he wanted the tapes too.
I looked at the message.
BRING ITEM SEVEN TO SWITZERLAND.
Then you can ask Lucia why Margaret really died.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
Robert did not answer.
I stepped closer.
“What happened?”
He looked at me.
“She was stable the second day.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“Stable?”
“Yes.”
“So she could have survived.”
“Yes.”
My hands went cold.
“What changed?”
Robert looked down.
“Someone visited.”
“Who?”
Silence.
Luca’s face hardened.
“Name.”
Robert whispered:
“Sebastian.”
My father.
Dead-alive.
Victor’s father.
Margaret’s former husband.
“He found her?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Hospital security was compromised.”
“What did he do?”
“I don’t know.”
“Wrong answer.”
“I was not in the room.”
“Who was?”
“Lucia.”
Luca froze.
His mother.
Robert continued:
“And a doctor.”
“Name?”
“Dr. Marcus Vale.”
Martin Vale’s father.
The jeweler.
Of course.
Everything circled.
I looked at Martin, now recovering at the hospital.
“Marcus is alive?”
Robert nodded.
“Retired.”
“Where?”
“Connecticut.”
Luca looked at Marco.
“Find him.”
Marco was already moving.
I looked at Emily.
Her face had gone white.
She whispered:
“Mom died after Sebastian visited.”
“Yes.”
Robert said.
“Did Lucia accuse him?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“She accused the doctor.”
Silence.
“What?”
Luca asked.
Robert continued:
“She believed Marcus changed Margaret’s medication.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
“From Sebastian?”
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
My father may have paid a doctor to kill my mother.
“Proof?”
Robert pointed toward Item Seven.
“Account ledger.”
The black necklace.
Data capsules.
Payments.
Maybe one was Marcus Vale.
Luca stared.
“So Sebastian wants the necklace because it proves he paid for Margaret’s murder.”
“Yes.”
That made sense.
Too much sense.
“Then why ask Claire to bring it?” Emily said.
Robert looked at me.
“Because Sebastian thinks Claire will choose him if he tells the story first.”
I laughed.
“He has high confidence.”
“Sebastian always did.”
My phone rang.
Unknown international number.
Everyone froze.
Switzerland.
I answered.
“Hello?”
Lucia.
Weak.
“Claire.”
My chest tightened.
“Are you safe?”
“No.”
At least honest.
Luca stepped closer.
“Mom.”
“Luca.”
Her voice broke.
“I’m sorry.”
“Where are you?”
“Clinic basement.”
“Sebastian?”
“Upstairs.”
“Police?”
“Compromised.”
“Swiss authorities?”
“He has someone inside.”
Of course.
Lucia continued:
“Do not bring Item Seven.”
I looked at the necklace.
“Why?”
“Because he cannot decode the capsules without Margaret’s key.”
“My palm?”
“No.”
Silence.
“What key?”
“Emily.”
We looked at her.
Emily froze.
“What?”
Lucia continued:
“Margaret divided access.”
“Claire opens Black Vault.”
“Emily decrypts Item Seven.”
Emily stared.
“How?”
“Your retinal pattern.”
I almost laughed.
“Mom really liked security.”
Lucia managed a weak sound that might have been laughter.
“She was terrified.”
That answered everything.
Lucia whispered:
“Sebastian does not know Emily survived.”
Emily looked at me.
“He thinks I died.”
“Yes.”
“Then we have advantage.”
“No.”
Lucia’s voice sharpened.
“Do not come.”
Luca stared.
“She has you.”
“I chose this.”
“What?”
Silence.
Lucia exhaled.
“I came out of hiding because I knew Sebastian was watching Claire.”
I felt cold.
“You let him find you.”
“Yes.”
“As bait.”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
Another adult turning themselves into strategy.
Luca looked furious.
“Why?”
“To move his attention off Sofia.”
That softened him for half a second.
Then made him angrier.
“You could have told me.”
“I know.”
“Stop choosing for everyone.”
Lucia cried quietly.
“I know.”
Good.
The pattern was finally being named.
I looked at the phone.
“Lucia.”
“Yes?”
“My mother.”
Silence.
“She survived three days.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Lucia started crying.
“I failed her.”
My throat closed.
“How?”
“She asked me to move her.”
“To another hospital?”
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the doctor said transport would kill her.”
“Marcus Vale.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“He lied.”
Silence.
“Sebastian arrived.”
“Yes.”
“Did he hurt her?”
“I never saw.”
“What happened?”
Lucia’s voice shook.
“I left for twenty minutes.”
“Why?”
“To get the tapes.”
“When you returned?”
“She had coded.”
My breath stopped.
“Dead?”
“No.”
“What?”
“She was resuscitated.”
I stared.
“For how long?”
“Another six hours.”
This story kept extending her death.
“What did she say?”
“One sentence.”
“What?”
Lucia whispered:
“Claire is not Sebastian’s.”
Silence.
My whole body froze.
“What?”
Emily stared.
Luca went still.
Lucia continued:
“Margaret told me Sebastian believed you were his.”
“But?”
“She said he wasn’t your father.”
I laughed nervously.
“Then who is?”
“I don’t know.”
Of course.
My identity changed again.
Lucia continued:
“She said the truth was in Room Four.”
Room Four.
Paternity and adoption records.
The one we had not opened.
Luca looked at me.
No.
Not now.
But maybe.
Lucia whispered:
“Do not let Sebastian see it first.”
Then a door opened on her end.
She gasped.
The phone dropped.
Sebastian’s voice came faintly.
“Who are you calling?”
Lucia said nothing.
A scuffle.
Then silence.
Call ended.
Luca’s face became stone.
“We go.”
Marco shook his head.
“Switzerland needs coordination.”
“We coordinate on the plane.”
Federal agents objected.
Luca ignored.
I looked at Item Seven.
Then Emily.
Then the sealed stairs leading to Room Four.
My mother’s final words had pointed there.
Claire is not Sebastian’s.
Who was I?
Did it matter?
Part of me wanted to refuse every bloodline.
Another part needed the truth because too many people had used the uncertainty against me.
I looked at Luca.
“Room Four first.”
He stared.
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
We opened it with federal witnesses.
Two Dawson biometrics.
One Moretti authorization.
Luca.
Door.
Cold storage.
Files.
Thousands.
Birth certificates.
DNA reports.
Adoptions.
Paternity settlements.
At the center:
DAWSON, CLAIRE.
I did not move.
Emily took my hand.
“Together?”
“Yes.”
We opened it.
Birth certificate.
Margaret Dawson.
Mother.
Father field:
SEALED.
DNA envelope.
Old test.
Alleged father:
SEBASTIAN HALE — EXCLUDED.
I stopped breathing.
Lucia was right.
Next page.
Alleged father:
ANTONIO MORETTI — EXCLUDED.
Luca exhaled.
Good.
Next.
HENRY DAWSON — EXCLUDED.
Emily stared.
“No.”
Then one final DNA report.
Biological father:
ROBERT BELLINI.
Silence.
No one moved.
I looked at Robert.
He went completely white.
“No.”
The report said 99.99%.
My stomach dropped.
Robert Bellini.
Vanessa’s father.
Was my father.
Which made Vanessa—
my half sister.
She stared at me.
Then at him.
And whispered:
“Dad?”
Robert sat down.
Like his legs no longer worked.
Luca looked at him.
“You knew.”
Robert covered his face.
Before entering Room Four, Emily stopped beside the sealed door.
“Claire.”
“What?”
“If we find something you hate, we can close it.”
I stared.
“Can we?”
“Yes.”
“Even if Luca wants answers?”
Luca answered from behind us.
“Yes.”
I turned.
He looked serious.
“Your paternity file is yours.”
Not Moretti property.
Not evidence automatically.
Mine.
That mattered.
I looked at Emily.
“Open it.”
She nodded.
“Together.”
The scanner lit.
For the first time all night, the door felt less like something being done to me.
I was choosing to cross it.
Maybe that was the difference between a secret and an answer.
“Yes.”
Robert sat outside Room Four under guard.
I looked at him before entering.
He looked older now.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
“Did you love my mother?”
I asked.
He froze.
Luca and Emily both stayed silent.
Robert swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Then why hurt her?”
“I wanted the vault.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“I wanted everything to stay arranged the way I understood it.”
“Meaning?”
“Bellinis controlled insurance. Morettis controlled shipping. Hales controlled private lending.”
“And Mom threatened that.”
“Yes.”
“So control mattered more.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The honesty disgusted me.
But I needed it.
“Did you ever think about me after she died?”
“Every day.”
“Did you check on me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you help?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because helping would reveal paternity.”
I laughed bitterly.
“So reputation mattered more too.”
“Yes.”
Emily looked at him.
“You are very good at admitting things after everyone finds proof.”
He flinched.
Accurate.
I turned back to the door.
Whatever Room Four said, at least I no longer needed Robert to make himself sympathetic.
He had already told me who he was.
Emily looked at me before the scanner lit.
“No matter what name is on that file, you’re still Claire.”
I swallowed.
“So are you still Emily.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Sometimes identity needed witnesses more than paperwork ever could.
May you like
The Black Vault went silent.
Everything changed again.
