Chapter 3

Ravenwood looked dead.

Burned stone.

Blackened beams.

A roofline broken by twenty years of weather.

The Hudson wind cut across the hill.

I stood beside the SUV with my right hand wrapped in fresh gauze and my left hand shoved into my coat pocket.

Luca had insisted on an armored vehicle.

Marco had insisted on six security officers.

Dr. Hayes had insisted I remain seated.

Only one of those instructions survived the drive.

Diesel jumped out first.

The huge Rottweiler sniffed the ground.

Then stared toward the ruins.

Low growl.

“Does he know this place?” I asked.

Luca looked at Robert.

Robert’s face tightened.

“Antonio kept dogs here.”

“Diesel wasn’t alive.”

“No.”

“Then?”

“Moretti kennel lines.”

I stared at Diesel.

Apparently even the dog had inherited family history.

Vanessa climbed out of the second vehicle.

No sapphire gown now.

Black trousers.

Cream coat.

No engagement ring.

I noticed.

So did Luca.

Neither said anything.

Robert came under security escort.

Not arrested.

Not trusted.

Emily and Victor Hale were somewhere beneath us.

My sister.

A woman I barely remembered.

And the man connected to Vanessa’s father’s debt.

Luca looked at me.

“You stay behind Marco.”

“I know.”

“No improvising.”

“That sounds targeted.”

“It is.”

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

Then Robert walked toward a collapsed stone arch.

“Entrance.”

The old cellar stairs disappeared under ivy.

Marco’s team cleared them.

Diesel went first.

The tunnel smelled damp.

Stone.

Rust.

Old smoke.

My pulse hammered.

Memory stirred.

A little girl’s hand in mine.

Emily?

A man saying:

Count the birds, Claire.

Seven bronze birds.

I looked up.

Set into the tunnel ceiling were small bronze plaques.

Birds.

One.

Two.

Three.

Seven total.

My breath stopped.

“This is it.”

Luca looked at me.

“You remember.”

“Yes.”

At the bottom, a steel door waited.

Black.

No handle.

Three panels.

One palm plate.

One circular lock.

One recessed slot marked BELLINI AUTHORIZATION.

Robert whispered:

“Black Vault.”

The door had survived the fire.

Of course it had.

Marco raised his radio.

No signal.

Robert said:

“Shielded.”

Luca looked toward him.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Anything else you want to mention before someone points a gun at us?”

Robert looked away.

“That depends.”

Luca laughed without humor.

“Wonderful.”

A voice came through a speaker above the door.

“Claire.”

My entire body froze.

My own voice?

No.

Almost.

Slightly lower.

Older.

Emily.

I stepped forward.

“Emily?”

Silence.

Then a laugh.

Soft.

“You still say my name like you remember me.”

My throat closed.

“I barely do.”

“I know.”

Luca looked at Marco.

He signaled everyone to stay ready.

I looked at the speaker.

“Are you okay?”

“Depends on your definition.”

“Is Victor with you?”

“Yes.”

A man’s voice came through.

“Hello, Morettis.”

Victor Hale.

Smooth.

Calm.

Luca’s face hardened.

“You have Martin Vale.”

“Martin is unharmed.”

“Emily?”

“Also.”

Emily laughed.

“That is generous.”

Victor ignored her.

“We need the door.”

Luca looked toward the three-lock system.

“No.”

Victor sighed.

“Then we stay here.”

“Police are coming.”

“Good.”

Robert went pale.

Victor continued.

“I enjoy witnesses when they cannot enter.”

I looked at Robert.

“Why does police not scare him?”

Robert swallowed.

“Because he thinks the contents are more dangerous to us.”

Luca stared.

“What exactly is in there besides Item Seven?”

Robert hesitated.

“Family ledgers.”

“What kind?”

“Payments.”

“To who?”

“Judges. officials. unions.”

“Crimes.”

“Yes.”

“So Victor wants leverage.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa stared at her father.

“And you were going to give him that?”

“No.”

“What were you going to give him?”

“The necklace.”

“That is the same thing.”

Robert’s face tightened.

“I planned to redeem the debt before he decoded it.”

Luca laughed.

“Everyone has a temporary plan tonight.”

Vanessa looked away.

Emily spoke again.

“Claire.”

“Yes.”

“You have the key.”

My right hand throbbed.

“Apparently.”

“You don’t have to remove it.”

I froze.

“What?”

Robert stepped forward.

“Emily.”

She ignored him.

“The implant is NFC-compatible.”

Marco frowned.

“Modern?”

“No.”

Emily laughed.

“Mother upgraded it.”

“After the original surgery?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Claire was fourteen.”

I stared.

“I never had surgery at fourteen.”

“You had a mole removed.”

My stomach dropped.

Right palm.

Small scar.

I had forgotten.

“She replaced the key.”

“Yes.”

“So I don’t need anyone cutting me.”

“No.”

Relief hit.

Luca looked at Robert with disgust.

“You knew?”

Robert looked ashamed.

“Not that part.”

Good.

For once.

Emily continued.

“Place Claire’s palm near the center panel.”

Luca looked at me.

“Your choice.”

That mattered.

I stepped forward.

Pressed my bandaged palm close.

The panel lit green through the gauze.

MORETTI-DAWSON KEY VERIFIED.

My breath caught.

Second panel.

VOICE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Emily said:

“That’s me.”

A green light inside the vault side of the door activated.

She spoke one phrase.

“Lucia remembers.”

SECOND AUTHORIZATION VERIFIED.

Third panel:

BELLINI.

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She stared.

“No.”

Robert turned.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

“You have to.”

“Why?”

“To open the vault.”

“Victor has a gun.”

“Yes.”

“And you want me to hand him the archive.”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“We need to get Emily out.”

Vanessa looked at me.

Then Luca.

Then the door.

“No.”

Victor’s voice sharpened.

“You misunderstand your position.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked less like Luca’s disgraced fiancée and more like someone finally sick of being used.

“No.”

He laughed.

“Your father owes me thirty million.”

“That is his debt.”

Robert flinched.

Vanessa continued.

“He made me steal. He made me lie. He used my wedding.”

Robert whispered:

“Vanessa.”

She turned.

“You told me it was temporary.”

He said nothing.

“Everything with you is temporary until someone else bleeds.”

I looked at my hands.

So did she.

Her eyes filled.

“I’m sorry, Claire.”

I did not answer.

Not yet.

She faced the door.

“I’m not opening it for Victor.”

Silence.

Victor spoke quietly.

“Then Martin loses a finger.”

Martin screamed from inside.

Vanessa flinched.

Luca’s face hardened.

“Victor.”

“Three.”

Marco moved subtly.

“Two.”

Emily shouted:

“Wait.”

A crash inside.

Victor swore.

Gunshot.

We all froze.

Diesel exploded.

The Rottweiler slammed against the vault door.

Barking.

Another crash.

Emily shouted:

“NOW.”

Vanessa pressed her hand to the Bellini plate.

Green.

THIRD AUTHORIZATION VERIFIED.

Door locks released.

Luca pulled Vanessa back.

Marco’s team breached.

The vault opened.

Chaos.

Victor stood near a steel table.

Gun pointed toward Emily.

Martin was on the floor.

Bleeding from his forehead.

Alive.

Emily kicked Victor’s wrist.

Gun fired into the ceiling.

Diesel lunged.

Not biting.

Body slammed Victor’s legs.

He fell.

Marco’s team swarmed him.

Luca grabbed the gun.

Vanessa rushed toward Martin.

I stood frozen.

Emily stood ten feet away.

My face.

Not exactly.

Same eyes.

Same nose.

Hair shorter.

A thin scar near her chin.

She stared at me.

“Cece.”

The nickname broke something.

Memory came back.

A bedroom.

Two girls under blankets.

Emily whispering stories.

Me saying Em.

I started crying.

She did too.

“Hi.”

I laughed through tears.

“That’s all you have?”

“I had twenty years to write something better.”

“Twenty-one.”

“See? You always corrected me.”

I moved toward her.

Stopped.

She opened her arms.

I went.

My hands hurt.

My face hurt.

Nothing mattered.

My sister.

Alive.

Victor was dragged away.

Martin groaned.

Robert stood at the vault entrance.

Luca stayed near him.

Watching.

Protective.

Suspicious.

Inside the vault, rows of black drawers lined the walls.

One central pedestal held a velvet case.

Item Seven.

Emily looked over my shoulder.

“Don’t touch it.”

Luca turned.

“Why?”

“Because the necklace is not the dangerous part.”

She pointed to the pedestal.

A pressure sensor.

“Lift it and Room Two opens.”

“What is Room Two?”

Emily’s face became serious.

“The reason Mother hid me.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Margaret didn’t hide me from Antonio.”

Robert went pale.

Emily looked at him.

“She hid me from Robert Bellini.”

Vanessa stopped.

Luca’s eyes hardened.

“Why?”

Emily looked toward Robert.

“Because he killed our mother.”

Silence.

Robert’s face emptied.

“No.”

Emily reached into her coat.

Pulled out a cassette.

Margaret Dawson’s handwriting.

IF ROBERT FINDS THE BLACK VAULT, PLAY THIS.

My breath stopped.

Before we opened the door, Emily looked at my bandaged right hand.

“Does it still hurt?”

“Yes.”

“Mom would hate that.”

“You remember her saying things like that?”

“She hated blood.”

I laughed.

“Our mother designed a vault key inside my palm.”

“She could be inconsistent.”

That sounded so ordinary I almost cried.

“What was she like when nobody was afraid?”

Emily thought.

“She sang badly.”

I stared.

“She told me she never sang.”

“She lied.”

“About singing?”

“She was terrible.”

I laughed.

Really laughed.

The tunnel, Victor, Robert, the vault—all of it disappeared for five seconds.

Emily smiled.

“She burned pancakes too.”

“That I remember.”

“See?”

A memory returned.

Smoke alarm.

Mom swearing.

Emily opening a window.

Me laughing under the table.

Not every recovered memory was a crime scene.

I needed that.

Maybe more than the vault.

Emily held it out to me.

Emily squeezed my shoulder once.

“Still here?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

So was she.

May you like

“Our mother knew this day would come.”

And Robert Bellini took one slow step backward toward the tunnel.
