Chapter 2

Robert Bellini did not sit.
He stood behind the black briefcase as if the dining table belonged to him.
Luca stared at the photograph marked MORETTI BLACK VAULT — ITEM 7.
“What black vault?”
Robert smiled faintly.
“The one Antonio kept from you.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“My father has been dead nine years.”
“Yes.”
“So whatever he kept is estate property.”
“Maybe.”
“I hate that word.”
“So do I.”
Vanessa looked at her father.
“You said we only needed the Lucia collection.”
Robert ignored her.
That hurt.
I could see it even from the doorway when Dr. Hayes brought me back twenty minutes later with cleaner bandages and strict instructions not to touch anything sharper than bread.
Luca noticed me.
“Done?”
“Apparently I remain alive.”
Dr. Hayes muttered:
“Against advice.”
I sat near the wall.
Diesel immediately moved beside me.
Robert continued as if none of us had interrupted.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
“Answer your daughter.”
Robert finally turned.
“You knew enough.”
Her face changed.
“Enough for what?”
“To get access.”
Silence.
Luca laughed once.
“Of course.”
Vanessa stared at her father.
“You encouraged me to marry him for a vault?”
“No.”
Robert’s expression stayed calm.
“I encouraged you to marry him because you loved him.”
“Then why does that sound like a defense?”
“Because you are emotional.”
She flinched.
Luca’s face hardened.
“Do not talk to her like that in my house.”
Everyone looked at him.
Even Vanessa.
He did not forgive her.
That was clear.
But he was not going to let her father humiliate her either.
Robert closed the briefcase.
“The Black Vault contains bearer instruments, loose stones, estate deeds, and private letters.”
“How do you know?”
“I saw it.”
“When?”
“Twenty years ago.”
“With my father.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Not in this house.”
“Where?”
Robert looked toward me.
“Ask Claire.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
Luca’s eyes moved to me.
Robert smiled.
“Claire Dawson.”
I stared.
“You know me.”
“Yes.”
“I have never met you.”
“Not consciously.”
My skin crawled.
Luca stepped slightly closer to me.
“When did you meet her?”
Robert looked at the bandage over my eye.
“Twenty-three years ago.”
I laughed nervously.
“I was six.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“The Black Vault.”
Silence.
No.
Luca’s expression sharpened.
“What is he talking about?”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
Robert opened the briefcase again.
Removed one photograph.
A little girl.
Dark hair.
Green sweater.
Standing beside Antonio Moretti.
My stomach dropped.
“That’s me.”
Luca stared.
“You knew my father.”
“I don’t remember.”
Robert turned the photo over.
CLAIRE — AGE 6.
Antonio’s handwriting.
I knew because Luca had framed notes from him in the library.
My hands began shaking.
“What was I doing there?”
Robert looked at me.
“Your mother worked for Antonio.”
I froze.
“My mother was a legal secretary.”
“Yes.”
“For who?”
“Moretti Holdings.”
No.
I had always been told she worked downtown.
Generic law office.
Not Luca’s family.
“Name.”
Robert said:
“Margaret Dawson.”
Luca went still.
He knew it.
“What?”
I asked.
He looked at me.
“My father had a Margaret Dawson in his old legal files.”
My throat tightened.
“What kind of files?”
“Private trusts.”
Robert nodded.
“She drafted the Black Vault inventory.”
I stared.
“My mother knew the vault.”
“She helped create it.”
“Why bring me?”
“She had nowhere else to leave you one afternoon.”
“That simple?”
“No.”
Of course.
“What else?”
Robert looked at Luca.
“Antonio considered Claire family.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
“Because Margaret was his half sister.”
Silence.
No.
I stared.
“My mother was Antonio Moretti’s sister?”
“Half sister.”
Luca stopped breathing.
That made my mother his aunt.
Me—
his cousin.
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The Moretti family apparently grew under every floorboard.
Luca looked at Robert.
“Proof.”
“Black Vault.”
“Convenient.”
“I have copies.”
He removed one birth certificate.
Margaret Dawson.
Mother: Lucia Moretti.
Father: Henry Dawson.
Luca stared.
“Lucia.”
His grandmother.
“Yes.”
I felt dizzy.
My mother had never told me.
Maybe she never intended to.
I looked at Robert.
“Why hide it?”
“Margaret wanted nothing from the Morettis.”
“Smart.”
Robert actually smiled.
“Very.”
Luca looked at me.
Not employer now.
Not exactly.
Family.
Again.
The idea felt absurd.
I had worked in his house two years.
Called him sir.
Carved chicken.
Cleaned silver.
Now Robert said we were cousins.
I almost laughed.
“What does my mother have to do with Item Seven?”
Robert’s expression changed.
“She encoded it.”
“Encoded what?”
“The necklace.”
I frowned.
“It’s jewelry.”
“No.”
Robert tapped the photograph.
“The black stones are synthetic crystal capsules.”
“Data storage?”
“Yes.”
Marco stepped closer.
“How old?”
“Prototype technology. Microscopic engraving.”
“What data?”
Robert lowered his voice.
“Accounts.”
Luca stared.
“Whose?”
“Politicians. judges. contractors. private lenders.”
“Blackmail.”
“Yes.”
“Antonio kept blackmail inside my grandmother’s necklace.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because no one searches a dead woman’s jewelry for bank data.”
Smart.
Horrible.
Robert continued:
“Victor Hale wants Item Seven.”
The lender.
Thirty million debt.
Now not just money.
Leverage.
Luca stared at Vanessa.
“Your father’s debt led him to my family archive.”
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t know.”
This time Luca believed her.
I could tell.
Then Marco’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His face changed.
“Sir.”
“What?”
“Martin Vale was found.”
“The jeweler.”
“Yes.”
“Alive?”
Marco hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Ravenwood.”
Silence.
Robert looked toward him.
Luca noticed.
“What?”
Robert said nothing.
“What is Ravenwood?”
Luca asked.
“My father’s old Hudson estate.”
Robert answered:
“The Black Vault is beneath it.”
Luca stared.
“That property burned.”
“Main house.”
“Vault?”
“Underground.”
Silence.
“What was Martin doing there?”
Marco checked.
“He called police from a service tunnel.”
“Why?”
“He says someone locked him inside.”
“Who?”
Marco looked at me.
Then Robert.
“He says Claire Dawson.”
The room went silent.
I stared.
“I’m here.”
Marco nodded.
“I know.”
“Then who did he see?”
“He sent a camera image.”
Marco turned his phone.
A woman.
My height.
My face.
Same dark hair.
Maybe older by two years.
Standing in a stone tunnel.
My blood went cold.
“I don’t know her.”
Robert did.
His face changed.
“Emily.”
I turned.
“Who?”
Robert stared at the image.
“Margaret’s other daughter.”
Silence.
“My sister?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t have a sister.”
“You did.”
“Did?”
“She disappeared when you were eight.”
I laughed nervously.
“No.”
“Your mother told you she died.”
I remembered.
A framed photograph in a drawer.
Two little girls.
I had always been told the second was my mother’s cousin.
No.
Memory shifted.
Someone calling me Cece.
Someone braiding my hair.
I pressed my bandaged fingers to my forehead.
Luca noticed.
“Claire.”
“I remember a girl.”
Robert nodded.
“Emily.”
“What happened to her?”
“Margaret hid her.”
“From who?”
“Antonio.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“My father.”
“Yes.”
“Why hide one daughter and not the other?”
Robert looked at me.
“Because Emily inherited the vault authorization.”
“And Claire?”
“Claire inherited the key.”
Silence.
I stared.
“What key?”
Robert’s eyes dropped to my bandaged right hand.
“Your mother hid it where Antonio could never take it.”
My skin crawled.
“Where?”
“She had a surgeon place a micro-key beneath your skin.”
No.
I stood too fast.
The room tilted.
Luca reached toward me.
Stopped before touching.
“Claire.”
Robert continued.
“Right palm.”
The hand covered in cuts.
Blood.
I stared at my bandage.
“No.”
“Margaret said you would never know unless the vault reopened.”
Marco looked horrified.
“An implanted object?”
“Tiny.”
I laughed.
“This is insane.”
“Yes.”
“Can you prove it?”
Robert took out another document.
Pediatric surgical record.
CLAIRE DAWSON — FOREIGN OBJECT IMPLANT, AGE 6.
Authorized guardian:
MARGARET DAWSON.
My throat closed.
Luca’s face became ice.
“She put a key in a child’s hand.”
Robert nodded.
“For protection.”
I almost screamed.
“Stop using that word.”
Silence.
Good.
Diesel stood and pressed himself against my leg.
I looked at Luca.
“What now?”
He looked at my bandaged palm.
Then Robert.
“No one cuts anything out of Claire.”
Robert opened his mouth.
“No.”
Luca’s voice sharpened.
“We image it first.”
Reason.
Good.
Marco nodded.
“Portable ultrasound.”
Dr. Hayes was already returning.
He looked furious before anyone explained.
“What now?”
I held up my right hand.
“Apparently I’m a safe-deposit box.”
He stared.
Luca almost laughed despite everything.
Then Dr. Hayes examined my palm.
Ultrasound.
Metallic object.
Small.
Flat.
Real.
I stopped breathing.
Robert whispered:
“The Black Key.”
Luca looked at him.
“And Emily?”
“Second authorization.”
“Vanessa?”
“Bellini third lock.”
Silence.
Three people.
One vault.
Me.
My lost sister.
And the woman who had just tried to steal Lucia Moretti’s emeralds.
Luca looked toward Vanessa.
Her face had gone completely pale.
Then Marco received another message from Martin Vale.
One line.
PLEASE HURRY.
EMILY IS NOT ALONE.
Luca stared.
“Who is with her?”
A second image arrived.
Victor Hale.
The lender.
Standing beside my sister.
Dr. Hayes finished the ultrasound and looked at Robert with open dislike.
“You implanted a key in a child?”
Robert shook his head.
“I didn’t.”
“Someone did.”
“Margaret authorized it.”
“That does not make it medically sane.”
I looked at the tiny bright shape on the screen.
“How big?”
“Six millimeters.”
“Can it hurt me?”
“Not if left alone.”
“Good.”
Luca said:
“Then it stays.”
I looked at him.
“That is my decision.”
He stopped.
Then nodded.
“You’re right.”
Small thing.
Important.
Dr. Hayes glanced between us.
“Excellent. One adult learned consent tonight.”
Marco coughed to hide a laugh.
Even I smiled.
Robert did not.
I looked at the ultrasound again.
A key beneath my skin for twenty-three years.
I had washed dishes with it.
Written exams.
Held my mother’s hand when she died.
Worked in Luca’s house.
A secret could live inside you without becoming who you were.
That thought helped.
May you like
Holding Sofia’s trust jewel inventory.
And pointing a gun toward the Black Vault door.
