Chapter 7

Three years after Vanessa tried to frame me, I graduated from nursing school.
Matteo screamed louder than anyone.
Luca claimed he did not cry.
He did.
Nico had video.
I refused to let him show me.
I took a job at a hospital not connected to Moretti donations.
That mattered to me.
Emergency department.
Hard.
Real.
People came in bleeding for reasons that had nothing to do with family conspiracies.
Car crashes.
Falls.
Kitchen cuts.
Ordinary pain.
I learned to stop assuming every bruise hid a plot.
But I never stopped asking:
“Do you feel safe at home?”
That question mattered.
Then Luca proposed.
Not at graduation.
Thank God.
Six months later.
My apartment.
No mansion.
No gala.
No ring hidden in evidence.
He held a small box.
“Would you consider marrying me?”
I laughed.
“Consider?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Then:
“But.”
He smiled.
“I expected that.”
Prenup.
Independent lawyers.
No financial dependence.
My career stays mine.
No automatic role in Moretti companies.
No household security access to my medical or employment records.
No one speaks for me because I am “family.”
Good.
Then Matteo.
We told him together.
He looked at me.
“Does this mean you’re my mom?”
Silence.
His mother, Lucia, had died when he was four.
I knew that.
I had never tried to replace her.
I said:
“No.”
He frowned.
Then:
“It means I’ll be your stepmother if you want that word.”
He thought.
“Can I just call you Hannah?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Simple.
Then wedding.
Small.
Matteo stood beside Luca.
Not behind me.
Nico gave a terrible toast.
Marco attended.
Mara too.
No Vanessa.
No Bellini family.
No press.
Matteo chose table with cousins.
Good.
Then married life.
Not fairy tale.
Luca still had control habits.
I had independence habits that became walls sometimes.
Therapy.
Arguments.
One big fight:
He had security follow me after a threat without telling me.
I found out.
Furious.
He said:
“I was scared.”
I said:
“That does not create permission.”
He apologized.
Changed protocol.
Good.
Then my hospital had a staff-assault case.
A nurse injured by patient’s family.
Administration wanted silence to avoid bad press.
I reported through union.
Luca had no role.
Good.
I did not need his power for every problem.
Then Moretti business.
Five years under compliance monitor.
Illegal port channels shut.
Bellandi-linked vendors removed after due process.
Some legitimate Bellini contracts remained.
No collective punishment.
Good.
Then Matteo turned twelve.
He asked more questions.
About Vanessa.
About kidnapping plan.
About why Hannah was chosen.
We told age-appropriate full story.
He learned my father Peter had used my name as a deterrent without telling me.
Matteo said:
“That was mean.”
I laughed.
“A little.”
Then:
“But he was trying to protect you.”
“Yes.”
“Was he wrong?”
“Yes.”
Good.
Children can hold that.
Then Vanessa after release.
She requested one meeting with Matteo.
He said no.
At fourteen, he changed mind.
Therapist present.
Luca not in room.
Hannah not in room.
His choice.
Afterward he said:
“She looked older.”
Then:
“She said she thought she could control Damian.”
I asked:
“What did you say?”
“I told her adults always say that after they lose control.”
Smart kid.
Then:
“Do you forgive her?”
He shrugged.
“I don’t know.”
Fine.
Then my own relationship with Vanessa.
None.
She wrote one apology.
Specific.
I’m sorry I bruised your wrist and then called you unstable.
I read.
Did not reply.
Good.
Then Damian appeal.
Failed mostly.
No new threats.
He eventually stopped mattering.
That was healing.
Then Peter Parker maintenance log.
Warehouse Six case resulted in settlement for injured workers.
My father’s evidence helped.
No building named after him.
Good.
His sister Carol gave me his tools.
I kept the red notebook.
Not as relic.
Because it smelled like him.
Oil and dust.
Then Luca once asked:
“Do you think your father would like me?”
I laughed hard.
“Absolutely not.”
He looked offended.
Then:
“He would eventually respect you.”
“Worse.”
Normal.
Then one night Matteo came home at 1:30 AM after first high-school party.
Luca waited in dark kitchen.
Terrifying.
I turned on light.
“No mafia interrogation.”
Luca:
“I was going to ask where he was.”
Matteo:
“You know where I was.”
Because location sharing was a consensual family app, not secret tracking.
Good.
Then Luca:
“Were you drinking?”
Matteo:
“No.”
Luca looked at me.
I said:
“Believe him unless you have reason not to.”
There.
Old lesson.
Luca nodded.
“Okay.”
Matteo looked surprised.
Then smiled.
Trust practiced in ordinary moments.
Not only crises.
The prenup barred any Moretti entity from employing Hannah without a separate written agreement approved by her own counsel. The household security protocol required consent before following adult family members unless an immediate documented threat existed. Matteo’s meeting with Vanessa ended as soon as he asked to leave, and no one pressured him to complete a reconciliation scene. The old E-4 room was later stripped of every hidden panel before being reused for normal storage. Hannah’s hospital career remained outside Moretti philanthropy so patients and colleagues did not depend on Luca’s influence.
The wedding prenup required separate written consent before any security vendor could access Hannah’s phone location or hospital schedule.
Matteo’s choice to call Hannah by her name rather than a parental title remained unchanged even after years, and nobody treated that as lack of love.
The hospital union case reminded Hannah that powerful institutions outside the Moretti family could also prefer silence when reputation was at stake.
Luca’s security-following mistake during marriage was documented in the household protocol review instead of being dismissed as a private argument.
Peter Parker’s old red notebook stayed in Hannah’s desk and was never used to decorate a Moretti office.
