Chapter 2

No one slept.
Matteo was moved to a secure location before midnight.
Not another Moretti property.
Mara insisted.
Luca agreed.
That surprised Nico.
It surprised me too.
A private residence owned by a retired federal judge who worked with Mara’s firm.
Two vetted protection officers.
No family security.
No Bellini staff.
No one whose loyalty had been inherited.
Matteo refused to leave without me.
“I want Hannah.”
My heart broke a little.
Luca looked at me.
“You don’t have to go.”
I understood what he meant.
I was still an employee.
Still injured.
Still had a right to say no.
“I’ll go until he falls asleep.”
Matteo heard.
“Until morning.”
I almost smiled.
“Until morning.”
Good.
Before we left, Mara interviewed Vanessa with her lawyer present.
Vanessa denied planning a kidnapping.
Then Mara played the recording.
Silence.
Vanessa’s lawyer closed his eyes.
Not a good sign.
Vanessa whispered:
“I never said kidnap.”
Mara slid the printed incident narrative across the table.
“What word would you use?”
Vanessa stared.
“Temporary removal.”
Mara laughed once.
Not kindly.
“A child taken without his parent’s knowledge to force delivery of evidence is kidnapping.”
Vanessa started crying.
“I was going to bring him back.”
Mara later summarized the rest.
Vanessa claimed Victor Bellini’s old partners were under federal investigation.
The Red Book could destroy her sister Celeste, her uncle Robert, and several companies that employed thousands.
She told herself she was protecting family businesses.
She believed Luca would never surrender the ledger voluntarily.
So she created leverage.
Matteo.
A fake kidnapping.
A short one.
Two hours, she claimed.
Maybe three.
Damian would take him from the service corridor during the Foundation dinner.
He would be held at a Bellini-owned hunting lodge.
Fed.
Protected.
Returned after Luca delivered the book.
Then Hannah would take the blame long enough to keep police away from Bellini.
Later, anonymous evidence would supposedly “clear” me.
Vanessa expected I would lose my job.
Maybe face questioning.
But not prison, she said.
I stared at Mara.
“She thought that made it better?”
“No.”
Good answer.
Then why frame Nico too?
Vanessa claimed that part was Damian’s addition.
She had agreed only because Nico had been urging Luca to turn the Red Book over to federal prosecutors.
If Nico looked involved in Matteo’s disappearance, Luca would distrust him.
The book would remain private long enough for Bellini to recover it.
Vanessa wanted two outcomes:
Get the ledger.
Break Luca’s trust in Nico.
She never expected violence.
That sentence appeared in every bad plan.
Then Damian moved the schedule.
Why?
Vanessa did not know.
He stopped answering her six hours before Matteo stole the phone.
That was when she panicked.
That was why she tried to remove me immediately.
If I was fired and gone before Damian moved, maybe the frame would collapse?
No.
Mara thought opposite.
Vanessa needed me gone so Damian could use my identity without me appearing in the wrong place.
Then Matteo.
He had seen Vanessa hide the evidence.
He became another problem.
She tried to convince him he was dreaming.
Then the accusation in the living room.
Vanessa claimed I attacked her.
Why?
She needed me out that night.
Luca had almost complied.
I looked at him.
He did not defend himself.
“I should have asked more questions.”
“Yes.”
My answer surprised both of us.
Good.
He nodded.
Then Nico.
He wanted the Red Book handed to prosecutors immediately.
Luca hesitated.
Again.
“Why?” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Because it contains Moretti crimes too.”
“So?”
“My father’s.”
“Your uncle’s?”
“Yes.”
“Yours?”
Silence.
There.
Not murder.
Not kidnapping.
But illegal port payments from years earlier.
Protection money.
Unreported cash.
Things Luca had inherited and continued briefly before closing some channels.
He had not turned the book over because he knew it could implicate him.
Important.
Mara looked at him.
“That is your problem, not Matteo’s.”
Luca’s face hardened.
Then softened.
“Yes.”
Good.
At 3:10 AM, his lawyer contacted federal prosecutors.
By 5:40, the Red Book was in government custody under negotiated proffer terms.
Not immunity.
Not a clean slate.
Just evidence.
Luca signed receipt.
Nico watched.
I did too.
Something shifted.
The entire kidnapping motive changed.
Damian could no longer recover a book Luca did not possess.
Would that stop him?
Maybe.
Or make him more dangerous.
Then Mara’s team searched Vanessa’s devices.
One deleted map.
Not the Foundation hotel.
A school route.
Matteo’s school.
Tomorrow morning.
Vanessa had moved the plan because Foundation dinner security was too heavy after a last-minute guest addition.
So she chose school pickup.
Damian would use a copied school transport credential.
My employee badge was meant to support a fake authorization message.
I felt sick.
They had planned to make it look like I changed Matteo’s pickup.
The school was notified.
Closed for emergency security review.
Parents told only there was a threat.
No public mention of Matteo.
Then Damian’s current location.
Unknown.
His phone off.
His apartment empty.
His known driver missing.
One black SUV stolen from a Bellini company lot.
Plate copied from Nico’s fleet car.
The frame was ready.
Then Mara found a second message thread.
Damian to unknown contact:
V.B. THINKS THIS IS A TWO-HOUR JOB.
Reply:
SHE DOESN’T NEED TO KNOW.
Damian:
MORETTI WILL BLEED FOR THE BOOK.
My skin turned cold.
Unknown contact:
AND THE BOY?
Damian:
DEPENDS ON HIS FATHER.
This was no staged kidnapping anymore.
Vanessa had hired a man who wanted leverage of his own.
Then one more message.
Unknown contact:
WHAT ABOUT PARKER?
Damian:
SHE’S USEFUL IF ALIVE.
Useful.
That word made Luca look at me.
“Why?”
No one knew.
Why would Damian care whether I lived?
Mara searched my background.
Nothing.
No Bellini connection.
No criminal record.
No money.
No family influence.
Then she paused.
“Your father?”
“Dead.”
“How?”
“Heart attack.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
“Name?”
“Peter Parker.”
She typed.
Then stopped.
Not heart attack.
At least not in one database.
Peter Parker had worked as an electrical contractor.
One major client:
Bellini Hotels.
Then a lawsuit.
Sealed.
Against:
Bellini River Development.
Settlement:
confidential.
Two months later, Peter died.
My stomach dropped.
“What lawsuit?”
Mara requested unsealing under current investigation.
Emergency order came through hours later.
Peter Parker had alleged Bellini contractors ordered him to disable fire-suppression sensors during an illegal renovation at an old warehouse.
He refused.
He documented the request.
Then settled.
Why?
Threats.
The case file contained one attached photograph.
Victor Bellini.
Damian Bellini.
And Peter Parker.
My father had known Damian.
Damian knew my name before Vanessa ever hired me.
The frame was not random.
Vanessa chose me because I worked in Luca’s house.
Damian agreed because I was Peter Parker’s daughter.
There was history.
Then a final page.
Peter’s affidavit:
If anything happens to me, the original maintenance log is with Hannah.
I stopped breathing.
“No.”
Luca looked at me.
“Do you have it?”
“I don’t even know what it is.”
But Damian believed I did.
That was why I was useful alive.
The kidnapping plan had two targets.
Matteo for Luca’s Red Book.
Me for my father’s maintenance log.
And Damian had just lost access to both.
Which meant the safest place for either of us—
was wherever he could not reach.
The problem was—
someone inside Luca’s mansion had already given him my home address.
The school canceled all altered pickup permissions and required direct parental verification before any future change. The Red Book transfer to prosecutors occurred under a written receipt, ending the possibility that any family member could privately trade it. Mara’s background search on Peter Parker used court records rather than rumor, revealing the old safety lawsuit without inventing a murder. The stolen SUV plate copy tied Damian’s plan to Nico without proving Nico knew anything, an important distinction. Matteo’s safe-house location was withheld even from most Moretti relatives, reducing the chance that family loyalty became a security leak.
The Bellini hunting lodge was searched after Vanessa identified it, and evidence showed supplies had been delivered there for a short stay even though Matteo never arrived.
The school transport credential had been copied from an old charity event, revealing a separate weakness in temporary visitor access.
The Red Book proffer required Luca to answer questions about his own conduct without using Matteo’s safety as bargaining leverage.
Peter Parker’s sealed case was unsealed only to the extent necessary for the current investigation, protecting unrelated workers named in the file.
Hannah’s apartment address appeared in Kessler’s copied database, confirming that the current Moretti household had not intentionally handed it to Damian.
A later review of this chapter's events added safeguard 6: evidence had to be verified independently, child safety could not be treated as leverage, and employment power could not replace due process.
