Chapter 4

Luca wanted to go.
Of course he did.
Mara said no.
Of course she did.
They argued for twelve minutes.
Not shouting.
Somehow that made it worse.
Luca:
“He thinks I’m coming.”
Mara:
“Good.”
Luca:
“He’ll run if I don’t.”
Mara:
“Also good.”
Luca:
“Kessler may die.”
Mara:
“Kessler helped plan a child abduction and still gets due process.”
That stopped him.
Good.
Nico stood near the window.
He had every reason to hate Kessler.
Kessler sold his routes.
Helped frame him.
Planned to make it look like he kidnapped Matteo.
Still, Nico said:
“We get him out.”
That mattered.
Then Warehouse Six.
Already searched earlier.
Now Damian wanted meeting there because he knew layout.
Mara’s team set surveillance.
No Luca.
A decoy convoy went toward property.
Damian called.
“You brought police.”
Luca was nowhere near.
Mara smiled faintly.
“How would he know?”
A lookout.
They found one man two blocks away with binoculars.
Bellini contractor.
Arrested.
Damian moved Kessler.
Again.
Then Vanessa gave them the one thing useful.
Damian had a fallback place.
Her father’s old lake house.
Closed for winter.
She hated admitting she knew.
But she did.
Mara checked.
Heat turned on remotely that morning.
Electric use.
One vehicle.
Tactical team moved quietly.
Kessler found alive.
Damian gone.
Again.
On a table:
Nico’s copied plates,
Hannah’s forged badge,
Matteo’s spare jacket,
and a handwritten list.
PLAN C.
Everyone stared.
Plan A:
School.
Plan B:
Warehouse lure.
Plan C:
FOUNDATION DINNER.
The original event was still in two days.
Even with Matteo hidden?
Maybe target changed.
Next line:
NO BOY NEEDED.
Then:
PUBLIC FEAR IS ENOUGH.
Damian planned to create evacuation chaos and use the confusion to destroy the public story before it stabilized.
The Foundation dinner would host a press announcement.
Luca had decided to disclose the Red Book cooperation publicly to stabilize businesses and prevent rumors.
Damian wanted to discredit that story.
How?
By producing evidence that Hannah had fabricated everything.
Plan C documents included:
A fake confession signed HANNAH PARKER.
Text:
I planted the phone, key, and recorder after Mr. Moretti fired me.
Motive:
romantic obsession with Luca.
Of course.
The oldest story.
A maid lying for attention.
A woman inventing bruises.
Then an edited audio clip using my voice from staff recordings.
I heard myself say:
“I want Vanessa gone.”
I had never said that sentence.
The clip stitched pieces from ordinary conversations.
“I want…”
from grocery discussion.
“Vanessa…”
from a schedule question.
“gone”
from a cleaning instruction.
Fake whole from real fragments.
Then a photograph.
Me and Luca alone in the kitchen during a late staff meeting.
Cropped to look intimate.
Damian planned to leak it to media.
Turn child-abduction conspiracy into jealous maid scandal.
If people doubted me, Vanessa’s role became murkier.
Bellini assets gained time.
Not enough to stop prosecution.
Enough to poison public narrative.
Vanessa saw the fake confession.
Her face went blank.
“He was going to blame everything on her.”
Mara:
“You started that.”
Silence.
“Yes.”
Good.
Then the Foundation dinner.
Cancel?
Luca said yes.
Mara agreed.
They canceled.
Statement:
security issue.
No details.
Damian lost another stage.
Then Kessler woke in hospital.
He agreed to cooperate.
Why did Damian turn on him?
Because Kessler wanted out after Matteo disappeared from reach.
Kessler said:
“This wasn’t what I signed up for.”
Again.
He had signed up to frame Nico and scare Luca.
Not hurt child.
Damian wanted more.
Kessler threatened to go to Luca.
Damian grabbed him first.
Then unknown detail.
Who gave Damian access to staff recordings to build my fake audio?
Vanessa did not.
Kessler did not.
The recordings came from Moretti mansion internal voice system.
Kitchen smart assistant.
Hallway security microphones.
Someone with current system access.
Back to inside enemy.
Mara traced download.
Account:
MARCO DESANTIS.
Again.
Marco looked ill.
This time no alibi.
The access happened yesterday at 3:14 PM.
He was at mansion.
Silence.
Luca looked at him.
“Marco?”
Marco closed his eyes.
“I downloaded the audio.”
Why?
His daughter.
Nineteen.
College.
Damian had sent him a photograph of her outside campus.
Threat:
Give me staff audio archive or she becomes part of this.
Marco complied.
Did not tell Luca.
Again.
Protection through secrecy.
Luca stood.
Walked away.
Not because he would hit Marco.
Because he needed distance.
Marco said:
“I’m sorry.”
Luca:
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
“Did you give him anything else?”
“No.”
Mara checked logs.
Audio only.
Good.
Then Marco’s daughter placed under protection.
Independent.
Then Luca faced Matteo later.
Video call.
His son asked:
“Is Mr. Marco bad too?”
Luca took time.
“No.”
Then:
“He made a bad choice because he was scared for someone he loves.”
Matteo frowned.
“Like Vanessa?”
Hard question.
Luca said:
“Some parts are similar.”
Then:
“But Vanessa planned to use you. Marco gave away recordings to protect his daughter. Both were wrong. Not the same.”
Good.
Children can understand degree.
Then Matteo asked:
“Did Hannah do anything wrong?”
Luca looked at me on screen.
“No.”
Matteo:
“Then why did you fire her?”
Silence.
There.
The question Luca deserved.
He answered:
“Because I believed an adult before I checked.”
Then:
“I was wrong.”
Matteo nodded.
Simple.
Then to me:
“Are you still mad?”
I laughed through tears.
“A little.”
Good.
Luca smiled faintly.
Then Damian made his next mistake.
He sent the fake confession to a journalist.
The journalist did not publish.
Why?
Metadata showed it was created before my alleged confession date.
The reporter called Mara.
That gave them Damian’s current relay address.
A hotel near Indiana state line.
Agents moved.
Room empty.
Again.
But surveillance camera caught Damian leaving with one suitcase.
No disguise.
He looked exhausted.
Not untouchable.
Not genius.
Just cornered.
Then camera showed where he went.
Bus station.
Ticket purchased in cash.
Destination:
Milwaukee.
Mara frowned.
“Why Milwaukee?”
I knew before anyone else.
My father’s sister lived there.
Aunt Carol.
The last person alive who might know where Peter kept other copies of his maintenance records.
Damian had lost every lever.
So he was going backward.
To my family.
Kessler’s cooperation confirmed Damian had added physical violence to a plan originally sold to participants as controlled intimidation. The fake Hannah confession contained vocabulary she never used, another reason the journalist doubted it before checking metadata. Marco’s daughter threat explained his conduct but did not prevent the independent review of his security decisions. Matteo’s question about whether Hannah was still angry became one of the first moments Luca acknowledged his firing decision directly to his son. The Foundation dinner cancellation cost money and embarrassed the board, but no one treated reputation as more important than safety.
The canceled Foundation dinner was rescheduled months later without a security spectacle, showing that safety decisions did not have to become permanent defeat.
The journalist who received the fake confession preserved the original file rather than forwarding screenshots, allowing metadata to expose the fabrication.
Marco’s disclosure about his daughter came only after Mara confronted the download logs; his delay remained part of the independent review.
Matteo’s therapist later used his question about Marco to help him understand that adults can make harmful choices without becoming one-word categories.
The fake audio fragments were traced to legitimate household recordings that should never have been retained as long as they were, prompting a new deletion policy.
