Chapter 3

Robert Bellini entered the study like a man arriving for a board meeting.

Not a family disaster.

Not a police scene.

Not a house where his son sat handcuffed beside two security guards.

He wore a gray overcoat.

Silver hair.

No visible fear.

The black metal case in his right hand carried three engraved letters:

M.

B.

R.

Moretti.

Bellini.

Rizzo.

Luca looked at the case.

Then at Robert.

“You have ten seconds.”

Robert glanced at Victor.

“My son is bleeding.”

“So is Rachel.”

His eyes moved to me.

Cold.

Assessing.

“Who?”

Vanessa stood.

“Dad.”

He turned.

She was crying.

He looked annoyed.

Not concerned.

That told me more than anything.

“Why did you use me?”

Robert’s face did not change.

“This is not the time.”

“It is exactly the time.”

“Vanessa.”

“Did you tell me to meet Luca because of the key?”

Silence.

Victor laughed.

Robert looked at him.

“Stop.”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Answer me.”

Robert sighed.

“I encouraged an introduction.”

“Why?”

“Because he was suitable.”

“For me?”

“For the family.”

Luca stepped closer.

“That is not the same.”

Robert looked at him.

“No.”

Vanessa laughed through tears.

“So Victor was right.”

“He often is in inconvenient ways.”

She flinched.

I watched Luca’s face.

He was not looking at her.

That was worse.

Robert set the metal case on the desk.

“Luca. We have a larger problem.”

“You mean your missing forty million?”

“I mean the reserve is compromised.”

Daniel Ross—Rizzo—looked sharply at him.

“What?”

Robert opened the case.

Inside were two empty slots.

One marked B.

One marked R.

Both empty.

Luca stared.

“Where are the keys?”

“Gone.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Your key too?”

Robert looked at her.

“Yes.”

Victor’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

Robert turned.

“Is it?”

Victor went pale.

Luca looked between them.

“Who took them?”

Robert closed the case.

“That is why I am here.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Your father.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“My father is dead.”

Robert smiled faintly.

“So was mine, for three years.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel laughed once.

“No.”

Robert’s expression remained calm.

“Vincent Rizzo is alive.”

Daniel’s face emptied.

“My father died in Rome.”

“He disappeared in Rome.”

“I buried him.”

“Closed casket?”

Luca muttered:

“Of course.”

Nobody laughed.

Robert continued.

“Vincent resurfaced two months ago.”

“Where?”

“Geneva.”

Daniel stared.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You said nothing.”

“He contacted me.”

“For what?”

“The reserve.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“He wanted his key.”

“He wanted all three.”

Luca looked at Robert.

“And now Bellini and Rizzo keys are gone.”

“Yes.”

“Meaning Vincent has two.”

“Possibly.”

“And needs mine.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa stared at her father.

“Then why were you planning to move forty million Friday?”

Robert looked at her.

“Because I intended to beat him.”

Luca laughed.

“You were going to steal from the reserve before another thief did.”

Robert’s face hardened.

“I was going to protect Bellini interests.”

“Using Moretti access.”

“Yes.”

“At least you are honest.”

Robert ignored that.

He looked at the safe key.

“Give it to me.”

No one breathed.

Luca stared.

“You walked into my house after your son nearly killed my employee and asked me for the key.”

“Victor acted independently.”

Victor shouted:

“Bullshit.”

Robert turned.

“Quiet.”

“No.”

Victor leaned forward against the guards.

“You told me to scare her.”

Vanessa stared.

Robert’s face changed.

Small.

Enough.

Luca saw.

“Scare her.”

Robert said nothing.

Victor continued.

“You said she was staff. You said no one would care if she quit.”

The room went silent.

Something cold moved through me.

Luca looked at Robert.

“Leave.”

Robert blinked.

“What?”

“Get out.”

“Luca.”

“Before I forget you are Vanessa’s father.”

Robert’s face hardened.

“You need me.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand the reserve.”

“I understand enough.”

“You cannot access it without Bellini documentation.”

“I don’t intend to access it.”

That surprised everyone.

Robert laughed.

“You will.”

“No.”

“What do you think happens to one hundred eighty-two million if Vincent gains control?”

“Law enforcement.”

Robert’s expression went still.

Luca smiled without humor.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“Fear.”

Robert stepped closer.

“You bring federal investigators into this and they will tear through Antonio’s records.”

“Then let them.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Luca.”

He looked at her.

“My father may have done things I don’t want to know.”

Her face tightened.

“But I am done protecting dead men by allowing living ones to hurt people.”

Silence.

I looked away.

That sentence stayed with me.

Marco’s phone buzzed.

He checked it.

“Police are here for Victor.”

Robert looked at Vanessa.

“Come home.”

She stared.

“No.”

His face changed.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

“You are emotional.”

She laughed.

“Finally.”

He stepped toward her.

Luca moved between them.

Robert stopped.

Vanessa looked at her father.

“You used my relationship.”

“I protected this family.”

“You used me.”

“I gave you access to a life most people would envy.”

Vanessa’s face broke.

“I loved him.”

Robert looked almost bored.

“Then you were fortunate.”

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.

Nobody moved.

Robert stared at her.

Then slowly touched his cheek.

“You will regret that.”

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“I regret almost everything else.”

Police arrived.

Victor was taken.

Robert left under escort but not arrest.

No charges yet.

Too many lawyers.

Too little proof.

Before he reached the door, he looked at Luca.

“Vincent will come for the key.”

Luca held his gaze.

“Then he can get in line.”

Robert looked at me.

For one second too long.

I noticed.

Luca did too.

“What?”

Robert said nothing.

He walked out.

I felt uneasy.

Luca looked at me.

“You okay?”

“Why did he look at me like that?”

Vanessa turned.

“What?”

“At the door.”

Daniel stared at me now too.

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

Daniel whispered:

“Rachel.”

I looked at him.

“You said your last name is Moore.”

“Yes.”

“What was your mother’s maiden name?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why?”

“She died when I was young.”

“What was her first name?”

“Elaine.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Luca’s expression hardened.

“You know something.”

Daniel opened them.

“My father had a daughter.”

Silence.

“What?”

“She disappeared after university.”

I laughed nervously.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Her name was Elaine Rizzo.”

My breath stopped.

No.

Daniel looked at me.

“You look exactly like her.”

The room disappeared.

I stared.

“My mother was Elaine Moore.”

“She changed her name.”

“You’re saying—”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“She was my sister.”

Silence.

My legs felt weak.

Which made Daniel—

“My uncle.”

He nodded.

Tears filled his eyes.

“And Vincent Rizzo…”

Luca finished quietly.

“Is Rachel’s grandfather.”

The Moretti safe key suddenly was not the only reason Vincent might come to the estate.

He had family here too.

Later, when the police finally cleared the study, I found myself standing alone in the hallway where the mirror had fallen.

The wall looked naked.

Too clean.

A few crystal fragments still glittered in the grooves between the marble tiles.

Clara had ordered everyone not to touch them until evidence technicians finished.

I stared at the bent bracket.

Then the cut one.

My entire body remembered the impact.

The weight.

The sound of glass exploding.

Luca stopped beside me.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I keep hearing that.”

“Maybe because you keep standing in crime scenes.”

“I work here.”

“Not tonight.”

I looked at him.

His face was exhausted.

The engagement was probably over.

His father’s money might be dirty.

His fiancée’s family had tried to use him.

And now his accountant was apparently my uncle.

“You should sleep too.”

He laughed quietly.

“That seems unlikely.”

I looked back at the wall.

“Do you think Victor meant to kill me?”

Luca did not answer immediately.

Then:

“I think he did not care if you died.”

That was somehow worse.

I swallowed.

“He said the mirror almost worked.”

“Yes.”

“You heard.”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean I should be afraid?”

His blue eyes met mine.

“Yes.”

No false comfort.

No promise that nothing would happen.

Just truth.

Then he added:

“But not alone.”

I looked away before the sentence could mean more than it should.

A maid.

An employer.

A house full of broken trust.

This was not the time to mistake protection for intimacy.

After Robert left, Vanessa remained near the desk.

Her face was pale.

The slap had surprised even her.

“I’ve never done that before,” she whispered.

Luca did not respond.

She looked at him.

“I know that isn’t the important part.”

“No.”

“I need you to understand something.”

He finally looked at her.

“I did not know my father planned us.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“I believe you.”

She froze.

“So that helps?”

“No.”

The word was gentle.

“That’s what makes it worse.”

Her eyes filled.

“If I had known, maybe I could defend myself.”

“Maybe.”

“But I didn’t.”

“I know.”

She nodded slowly.

Then looked at me.

“I am sorry the mirror fell.”

I held her gaze.

“Were you sorry before Daniel said Victor did it?”

Her face collapsed.

“No.”

The honesty surprised me.

“I was afraid.”

“Of losing Luca?”

“Yes.”

“And that made me disposable?”

She looked down.

“For one horrible hour, yes.”

Nobody spoke.

At least she had stopped pretending fear automatically became innocence.

Still, when he walked me back toward the guest room, he matched his pace to mine without mentioning my limp once.

May you like

And I noticed.

I wished I hadn’t.
