Chapter 1

The dining room doors closed.
Slowly.
Heavy wood meeting heavy wood.
The sound changed the entire house.
One second earlier, there had been twenty people talking over wine and music.
Now the hallway was silent except for my breathing.
Too fast.
Too shallow.
And the faint drip of blood from my forearm onto the carpet runner.
Luca stood between me and Vanessa.
The steel safe key sat in one hand.
The folded combination note in the other.
At the doorway, his accountant had gone pale.
His name was Daniel Ross.
Forty-two.
Perfect suits.
Quiet voice.
The kind of man who had handled Luca’s companies for almost a decade.
Luca looked at him.
“Daniel.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I can explain.”
Vanessa snapped:
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She realized it too late.
Luca’s voice dropped.
“You don’t want him to explain?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“What did you mean?”
She said nothing.
Security stood near the broken mirror.
Four men.
No one moved.
Luca looked down at me.
“Rachel.”
“I’m okay.”
“No.”
My shoulder screamed beneath me.
One leg was shaking.
My forearms were cut in several places.
None looked deep enough to panic over, but there were enough of them that blood was spreading quickly.
He looked toward his security chief.
“Call Dr. Hayes. And an ambulance.”
“I don’t need—”
“You were under a mirror.”
I stopped.
Fair.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She moved after I told her not to.”
I stared at her.
Luca turned slowly.
“She told you twice the bracket was loose.”
Vanessa’s eyes flickered toward me.
I hadn’t told him that.
He had heard.
From where?
Maybe the dining room.
Maybe security.
Maybe someone else.
It didn’t matter.
“She was exaggerating,” Vanessa said.
Luca looked at the bracket hanging from the wall.
One screw had pulled free.
The metal around the second had been cut.
Cleanly.
Not snapped.
Cut.
He crouched beside it.
Touched the edge.
Then looked up.
“Marco.”
His security chief stepped closer.
“Yeah.”
“Does that look broken?”
Marco examined it.
“No.”
Vanessa went still.
Luca asked:
“What does it look like?”
Marco’s face hardened.
“Tampered with.”
The hallway got colder.
Vanessa laughed.
“That’s absurd.”
Marco pointed.
“See the lower mounting point? Metal was scored.”
“By age.”
“Six-month-old hardware doesn’t age like that.”
Luca looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“I didn’t touch the bracket.”
“Who did?”
“I don’t know.”
He held up the key.
“You touched this.”
“No.”
I heard my name inside my head before he said it.
Luca looked at me.
“You saw her tape the key behind the mirror.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Around three.”
“Alone?”
“No.”
His eyes moved to Daniel.
I nodded.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You idiot.”
There it was.
Not denial.
Anger.
Luca looked at her.
“You want to keep going?”
She froze.
“No.”
“Good.”
He turned to Daniel.
“What were you doing behind the mirror?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Nothing.”
“That answer has had a bad night.”
I almost laughed.
It hurt too much.
Luca looked back at the note.
His safe combination.
Friday — after rehearsal dinner.
His wedding rehearsal dinner.
Three days away.
He read the line once more.
Then:
“What is in the safe?”
Nobody answered.
He looked at Daniel.
“I know what I keep in it.”
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“So the question is what you wanted.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“This is becoming ridiculous.”
Luca didn’t move.
“The key disappeared three weeks ago.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“You didn’t ask.”
“Why would I?”
“Because you were apparently storing it in the wall.”
She flushed.
Daniel spoke suddenly.
“I asked her to.”
Silence.
Vanessa turned.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Luca.
“I asked Vanessa to hide the key.”
Her face changed.
Not relief.
Fear.
Luca noticed.
“Why?”
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel.”
He exhaled.
“There were irregularities.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“In what?”
“Your private foundation.”
Vanessa snapped:
“Stop talking.”
Luca turned.
“You have said that twice now.”
She looked at him.
He continued.
“You’re not helping yourself.”
Daniel’s shoulders dropped.
“The safe contains the original donor ledgers.”
Luca stared.
“My donor ledgers are digital.”
“The private ones aren’t.”
“What private ones?”
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
That was enough.
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Her foundation.”
Vanessa said:
“No.”
Daniel continued.
“The engagement charity.”
Luca stared.
“The Moretti-Bellini Foundation.”
“Yes.”
“Created six months ago.”
“Yes.”
“What irregularities?”
Daniel rubbed one hand over his mouth.
“Money moved.”
“How much?”
Silence.
“How much?”
“Eight million.”
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.
Luca did not react immediately.
That was worse.
“Eight million dollars moved where?”
“Into three holding entities.”
“Whose?”
“Unknown.”
“You are my accountant.”
“I know.”
“And you are telling me eight million disappeared into unknown companies?”
“I discovered it last month.”
“And told no one.”
“I told Vanessa.”
That landed.
Luca turned.
“You knew.”
She lifted her chin.
“I knew there was an accounting error.”
“Eight million is not an error.”
“It may still be recoverable.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
He stepped closer.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And instead of telling me, you hid the key to the only hard-copy records.”
“It was temporary.”
“Until Friday.”
Her face changed.
He held up the note.
“After rehearsal dinner.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Luca looked at Daniel.
“What happens Friday?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Final transfer.”
“To where?”
“A trust account.”
“Name?”
He hesitated.
Luca’s voice became cold.
“Name.”
“The Bellini Heritage Trust.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Luca stared.
“Your family.”
“Yes.”
“So my foundation money was moving into your family trust.”
“No.”
“Daniel just said—”
“It’s more complicated.”
“Then make it simple.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“My father is in debt.”
Silence.
“What kind?”
“Private.”
“How much?”
“More than eight million.”
Luca laughed once.
“Of course.”
“It wasn’t supposed to stay there.”
“Where was it supposed to go?”
“Back.”
“When?”
She said nothing.
“After the wedding?”
Her face collapsed.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
The wedding.
Three days.
Eight million.
A private safe.
A hidden key.
A damaged mirror.
And me bleeding on Luca’s floor because I had seen too much.
Luca looked at Daniel.
“Why was the bracket cut?”
Daniel stared.
“I didn’t do that.”
Vanessa looked at him.
He looked back.
Something passed between them.
Fear.
Not conspiracy.
Different fear.
I saw it.
Luca saw it.
“Who did?”
Daniel whispered:
“Victor.”
Vanessa snapped her head toward him.
“No.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Victor who?”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Victor Bellini.”
Vanessa’s brother.
Nobody spoke.
Luca’s face went still.
“I have never met your brother.”
Vanessa looked away.
“That was intentional.”
“Why?”
“Because he is unstable.”
“What does he have to do with my safe?”
Daniel answered.
“He arranged the holding companies.”
Luca stared.
Vanessa looked furious.
“You promised.”
Daniel said quietly:
“You nearly killed her.”
The words hit harder than everything else.
Vanessa went pale.
“I did not touch the mirror.”
Daniel looked at me.
Then the cut bracket.
Then Vanessa.
“You told Victor she saw us.”
Silence.
Luca turned slowly toward Vanessa.
“What?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel continued.
“She called him after Rachel left the hallway.”
“Daniel.”
“Vanessa.”
He finally looked angry.
“Enough.”
Luca’s voice was quiet.
“Did you tell your brother Rachel saw you hide the key?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I told him there was a problem.”
“What did he say?”
She looked down.
“What did he say?”
“He said he would handle it.”
My stomach turned.
Luca looked at the broken bracket.
Then at me.
“Handle it.”
Vanessa rushed:
“I did not know he would touch the mirror.”
“But you knew he was coming.”
“No.”
“Did he have access to the house?”
She hesitated.
That was answer enough.
Luca looked at Marco.
“Lock the estate.”
Marco nodded.
“Already done.”
Daniel stepped backward.
Security moved closer.
Luca looked at him.
“You’re not leaving either.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Good.”
Dr. Hayes arrived.
He knelt beside me.
“Rachel.”
“I’m okay.”
He glanced at the blood.
“You people keep using that word incorrectly.”
He checked my pupils.
My shoulder.
My leg.
The cuts.
“Nothing obvious broken.”
Relief hit so hard I almost cried.
“Hospital imaging anyway.”
Luca nodded.
I shook my head.
“Wait.”
He looked at me.
“There was something else.”
Vanessa went still.
“What?”
Luca asked.
I looked toward the mirror debris.
“When I was cleaning earlier, before it fell, I saw something behind the lower frame.”
Marco moved.
“What?”
“A photograph.”
Vanessa whispered:
“No.”
Luca heard.
He looked at security.
“Search the debris.”
They did.
Two minutes.
Then Marco held up a torn photograph sealed behind one crystal panel.
Old.
Black-and-white.
Three men standing outside a bank.
One was Luca’s father, Antonio Moretti.
One was Vanessa’s father, Robert Bellini.
The third—
Daniel Ross.
But younger.
Much younger.
Impossible.
Daniel was forty-two.
The photograph looked at least thirty years old.
Luca stared.
“What is this?”
Daniel’s face went white.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
On the back, handwritten:
ROSS / MORETTI / BELLINI — ORIGINAL ACCOUNT.
Luca looked at Daniel.
“You told me your father died when you were ten.”
Daniel said nothing.
Luca’s blue eyes hardened.
“Who are you?”
Daniel finally whispered:
May you like
“My name is not Daniel Ross.”
And the hallway seemed to tilt beneath all of us.
