Chapter 2

The ambulance did not leave immediately.
Neither did I.
That was partly stubbornness.
Mostly shock.
Dr. Hayes wrapped my forearms while Luca stood ten feet away staring at Daniel.
Or whoever Daniel really was.
Vanessa had stopped talking.
That was almost more unnerving than when she lied.
The old photograph lay on the console table.
Antonio Moretti.
Robert Bellini.
A third man.
Same eyes as Daniel.
Same jaw.
But older than Daniel should have been.
Luca picked up the photo.
“Who is he?”
Daniel looked down.
“My father.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“And your name?”
“Daniel Ross is my legal name.”
“That was not my question.”
He swallowed.
“I was born Daniel Rizzo.”
Vanessa sat slowly.
“No.”
Luca looked at her.
“You know that name.”
Her face tightened.
“My father mentioned a Rizzo family.”
“Why?”
She said nothing.
Daniel answered.
“They were partners.”
“In what?”
Daniel looked at the photo.
“The original private account.”
Luca stared.
“What account?”
“A reserve fund.”
“For Moretti Maritime?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Originally?”
“Yes.”
“Thirty million.”
Marco muttered:
“That would be over a hundred million now.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“What happened to it?”
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“Don’t.”
Luca laughed quietly.
“We are past that.”
Daniel continued.
“The account still exists.”
“Under what?”
“A three-family custody structure.”
“Moretti. Bellini. Rizzo.”
“Yes.”
“What was it for?”
“Emergency liquidity. Political pressure. Legal defense.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Bribes?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Sometimes.”
The room got colder.
Luca looked away.
Not surprised exactly.
Disappointed.
Maybe in a father who had been dead long enough to avoid consequences.
“What does this have to do with eight million now?”
Daniel took a breath.
“The old account has grown.”
“How much?”
“One hundred eighty-two million.”
Nobody breathed.
Even Marco went still.
Vanessa looked sick.
Luca laughed once.
“Of course.”
Daniel continued.
“Three physical keys were created. One for each custodian.”
Luca looked toward the steel safe key.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“The key behind the mirror is the Moretti custodian key.”
“The one for the private safe?”
“It opens the safe and authenticates Moretti custody.”
“Bellini key?”
Vanessa said nothing.
He laughed.
“You have it.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“My father.”
“Robert.”
“Yes.”
“Rizzo key?”
Daniel looked away.
“My father had it.”
“Had?”
“He died.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
“Where is the key?”
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Victor does.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel stared.
“How?”
“My father gave it to him.”
Daniel went white.
“Why?”
“Because he said the Rizzos defaulted.”
“That key was never Bellini property.”
“Tell Robert that.”
Luca’s voice cut through both of them.
“What happens if someone has all three keys?”
Silence.
Daniel answered.
“They can authorize a reserve transfer.”
“How much?”
“Potentially all.”
Luca stared at Vanessa.
“Your family wanted my key.”
She swallowed.
“Yes.”
“To combine with yours and the Rizzo key Victor already has.”
“Yes.”
“And move one hundred eighty-two million.”
“No.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Not all of it.”
“How much?”
“Forty million.”
“For your father’s debt?”
“And legal exposure.”
“What legal exposure?”
She looked away.
Daniel answered.
“Federal investigation.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“For what?”
“Sanctions violations.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Alleged.”
“Of course.”
Daniel continued.
“Robert used Bellini Logistics to move restricted equipment through intermediaries.”
Luca stared at Vanessa.
“You knew.”
“I knew there was an investigation.”
“Did you know why?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he wanted my key?”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“Yes.”
I watched something die between them.
Not love necessarily.
Trust.
Maybe trust goes first.
Dr. Hayes finished one bandage.
“Rachel needs imaging.”
Luca nodded.
I tried to stand.
Pain shot through my shoulder.
He was there immediately.
One hand near my good arm.
“Easy.”
“I can walk.”
“Prove it slowly.”
I took one step.
My trapped leg hurt but held.
Another.
He kept his hand near me without touching.
Ready.
Vanessa watched.
Her face changed.
Not jealousy.
Something more tired.
“Luca.”
He looked at her.
“What?”
“I never wanted her hurt.”
He stared.
“She is bleeding because your brother tampered with the mirror.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You told him she saw you.”
“I was scared.”
“So was she.”
Vanessa looked at me.
For the first time since I had worked at the estate, she looked ashamed.
“I’m sorry.”
I did not answer.
Not because I wanted cruelty.
Because I didn’t know what to do with an apology offered beside blood.
Luca looked at Marco.
“Find Victor.”
“Already tracking his phone.”
“Police?”
“Not yet.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Why not?”
“Because his phone is moving.”
“Where?”
“Toward the estate.”
Everyone froze.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.”
Marco checked again.
“Five minutes out.”
Luca looked at security.
“Front gate sealed?”
“Yes.”
“Back access?”
“Sealed.”
“Garage?”
“Covered.”
Vanessa stood.
“He’ll panic.”
“Good.”
“No.”
She grabbed Luca’s arm.
“He gets violent when cornered.”
Luca looked down at her hand.
Then at her.
“Did he do this before?”
She stopped.
“What?”
“Has he hurt people before?”
No answer.
Luca’s expression changed.
“Vanessa.”
“He has a temper.”
“That is not what I asked.”
She looked at me.
Then down.
“Yes.”
“How bad?”
“Hospital bad.”
Silence.
Marco said:
“Vehicle at north gate.”
Security radios came alive.
A car engine revved outside.
Then a crash.
Metal against metal.
Someone shouted.
Luca moved toward the foyer.
I grabbed his sleeve with my good hand.
He looked back.
“Don’t.”
He stared.
“You were under a mirror ten minutes ago because of him.”
“That’s why.”
“Rachel.”
“He wants the key.”
“Yes.”
“So don’t give him a direct path to you.”
Luca looked at me.
Then at Marco.
“She’s right.”
Marco nodded.
“Study.”
They moved everyone into Antonio’s old study.
Security locked the inner doors.
The estate became suddenly distant.
Outside:
Footsteps.
Yelling.
A gunshot.
Vanessa screamed.
Luca pushed her behind the desk.
Marco drew his weapon.
I crouched near the wall because my shoulder could not take more movement.
Another shot.
Then silence.
A radio crackled.
“Suspect detained.”
Everyone exhaled.
Luca did not.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Weapon?”
“Recovered.”
“Anyone hurt?”
“One guard grazed.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Luca looked at her.
“Your brother came armed.”
She started crying.
“I know.”
Two guards brought Victor Bellini into the study five minutes later.
He was thirty-six.
Dark hair.
Beautiful suit torn at one shoulder.
Blood on his lip.
He looked at Vanessa first.
“You stupid bitch.”
Luca moved before anyone else.
He stepped between them.
“Try that again.”
Victor laughed.
“So this is him.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“The man whose house you broke into?”
“The man marrying my sister.”
“Not sure about that anymore.”
Vanessa flinched.
Victor smiled.
“Good.”
She stared.
“What?”
“You think this was ever about a wedding?”
Silence.
Victor looked at Luca.
“My father needed access.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Your sister needed access.”
“No.”
Victor laughed.
“She was the access.”
Vanessa went white.
“What are you talking about?”
“You think Dad encouraged you to date Luca because he liked him?”
“No.”
“He wanted the key.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Victor looked almost delighted.
“He knew Luca keeps sentimental items near the private residence. He knew you’d get access after engagement.”
Vanessa stared at her brother.
“You’re lying.”
“Ask Dad.”
Luca looked sick.
Victor continued.
“He picked the charity. He suggested the engagement foundation. He moved the first transfers.”
Vanessa started crying.
“You said the debt started last year.”
“It did.”
Victor shrugged.
“But the plan is older.”
“How old?”
He looked at Luca.
“Six years.”
The length of Luca and Vanessa’s relationship.
The room went silent.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
Her face shattered.
“I didn’t know.”
Victor laughed.
“She really didn’t.”
Luca stared.
That truth somehow hurt worse.
Victor continued.
“Dad saw you at the hospital fundraiser. Told her to introduce herself.”
Vanessa looked at Luca.
“I wanted to meet you.”
Victor shrugged.
“Both can be true.”
Luca closed his eyes.
For one second.
Then opened them.
Cold again.
“Where is the Rizzo key?”
Victor smiled.
“Safe place.”
“Where?”
“Not telling.”
Luca held up the Moretti key.
Victor’s smile vanished.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
Victor looked at the broken cuts on my arms.
Then smiled again.
“Mirror almost worked.”
Something inside Luca changed.
He crossed the room.
Marco caught his arm.
“Luca.”
Victor laughed.
“What?”
“You going to hit me?”
Luca stared.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“I’m going to make sure every prosecutor in New York knows you admitted sabotage in front of witnesses.”
Victor’s face changed.
Luca smiled without humor.
“That’s more expensive.”
The front door opened somewhere beyond the study.
Another security voice came through the radio.
“Mr. Moretti.”
“What?”
“You need to see this.”
“Who?”
“Robert Bellini.”
Vanessa froze.
Her father had arrived.
Before police took Victor away, Dr. Hayes checked my pupils again and made me follow his finger with my eyes.
“You’re still going to the hospital.”
“I know.”
Luca looked at him.
“She can travel?”
“By car. Slowly. No heroics.”
Victor laughed from across the room.
“She’s staff. Why does everybody keep acting like she matters?”
The words landed wrong.
Luca turned.
“She matters because she’s a person.”
Victor smirked.
“That your official statement?”
“No.”
Luca’s voice stayed quiet.
“That’s the minimum requirement for being in my house.”
For the first time, Victor had no answer.
I looked down at my bandaged arms because somehow that sentence affected me more than it should have.
May you like
And according to security—
he was carrying a black metal case stamped with the same three-family symbol from the old photograph.
