Chapter 9

I felt more tired than angry.
That scared me.
Anger meant I still had energy.
“Tell me.”
Thomas sat.
Linda looked at him.
Sarah too.
Everyone knew some version.
Again.
Thomas said:
“I worked for Vittorio’s father when I was twenty-three.”
“For how long?”
“Four years.”
“Doing what?”
“Surveillance.”
My stomach tightened.
“On Elena?”
“Yes.”
Luca’s face hardened.
Thomas continued.
“I was assigned to photograph meetings, track staff, record arguments.”
“You helped build the case against his mother.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then:
“I changed sides.”
“When?”
“After I saw them drug Elena.”
Luca froze.
“What?”
Thomas looked at him.
“Salvatore ordered a sedative placed in her wine before a medical evaluation.”
The incapacity case.
Manipulation.
“Your mother collapsed.”
Luca’s hands tightened.
“I remember.”
He had been twenty.
Everyone said stress.
Thomas continued.
“I realized they weren’t documenting instability. They were manufacturing it.”
“So you went to Elena.”
“Yes.”
“She trusted you?”
“No.”
Fair.
“I gave her originals.”
“Then?”
“She used me as double agent.”
That was how he met Michael Rizzo.
Linda.
Sarah later.
Everything.
I looked at him.
“You could have told me you did bad things.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because fathers like to be better in their children’s memories.”
I stared.
“That’s selfish.”
“Yes.”
Honest.
Linda touched his hand.
I noticed.
They had been apart years.
Still connected.
Luca asked:
“What archive does Gabriel have?”
Thomas looked at Linda.
She answered.
“Elena’s red archive.”
“Different from Marcello server?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Physical recordings.”
“Original tapes.”
“Some.”
“What proves Sarah poisoning?”
Sarah stared.
“I thought my illness was cancer.”
Linda looked at her.
“It was.”
“Then poisoning too?”
“Yes.”
Sarah closed eyes.
“The arsenic.”
Luca looked at her.
“You knew?”
“Not at first.”
Thomas said:
“David Kane altered treatment.”
Sarah looked confused.
“David?”
Luca said:
“Another story.”
We all almost laughed.
Then Daniel interrupted.
“Gabriel moved.”
Tracker from Matteo’s call.
South Chicago.
Old Moretti chapel.
Luca said:
“Go.”
No hesitation.
At chapel, night again.
Rain.
Of course.
Gabriel Moretti waited near altar.
Seventies.
Silver hair.
Black suit.
Matteo Moretti stood beside him.
Luca’s brother.
Alive.
Older.
Scar across jaw.
Luca stopped at door.
For moment, nothing else existed.
“Matteo.”
His brother looked at him.
“Luc.”
Then Luca punched him.
Hard.
Matteo staggered.
I blinked.
Daniel muttered:
“Family reunion.”
Matteo touched jaw.
“Fair.”
Then Luca hugged him.
Angry.
Tight.
Brother closed eyes.
Gabriel watched.
“Sentimental.”
Luca released Matteo.
“Where’s archive?”
Gabriel smiled.
“Always business.”
“You threatened my brother.”
“I offered him choice.”
Matteo said:
“He lied.”
Good.
“What did he want signed?”
Bloodline Continuity Trust.
Matteo had not signed.
Gabriel looked annoyed.
Luca smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Gabriel said:
“You think Marcello was problem? Vittorio was administrator.”
“Of what?”
“Family survival.”
Thomas whispered:
“Control.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“Traitor.”
Thomas shrugged.
“Retired.”
Gabriel held up red case.
Elena’s archive.
“If this opens publicly, Moretti name dies.”
Luca said:
“Maybe it should.”
Gabriel stared.
Salvatore would have hated answer.
Matteo smiled.
That told Luca his brother had changed too.
Gabriel looked at Claire.
“Bennett’s daughter.”
I stared.
“You know me too?”
“Your father cost us millions.”
“Good.”
Thomas almost smiled.
Gabriel continued.
“Red archive contains names not crimes. Allies. judges. police.”
“Bribes,” Daniel said.
“Relationships.”
“Same thing.”
Gabriel’s face hardened.
Luca asked:
“What about Sarah?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“You survived.”
Sarah froze.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew David poisoned me.”
“Yes.”
Luca moved.
Matteo grabbed him.
“Luc.”
Gabriel smiled.
“There. Violence.”
Luca stopped.
Would not give him performance.
Good.
Sarah asked:
“Who ordered it?”
Gabriel looked at Luca.
“Your father.”
Sarah’s face went white.
Salvatore.
Luca closed eyes.
Why?
Gabriel answered.
“Sarah found hospital laundering. Salvatore wanted her weak until wedding trust replacement could be signed.”
Everything repeated.
Elena.
Sarah.
Now Luca and Vanessa.
Same mechanism.
Generational.
Luca looked at red case.
“Open it.”
Gabriel shook head.
“No.”
“Then why bring it?”
“To trade.”
“For?”
“Matteo’s signature.”
Matteo said:
“No.”
Gabriel stared.
“You would let family fall?”
Matteo looked at Luca.
“Yes.”
Simple.
Gabriel’s face changed.
The old leverage no longer worked.
Then phone rang.
Gabriel answered.
His expression shifted.
“What?”
Someone shouted through speaker.
Fire.
Marcello archive recipients had triggered raids.
One on Gabriel properties.
His network collapsing.
He became desperate.
Pulled gun.
Aimed at Sarah.
“Sign.”
Matteo looked at Luca.
Then document.
Then pen.
I saw calculation.
He picked up pen.
Luca said:
“No.”
Matteo looked at him.
“Trust me.”
Luca’s face tightened.
That phrase.
Dangerous.
Matteo signed.
Gabriel smiled.
Then Daniel laughed.
Everyone looked.
“What?”
Daniel held up tablet.
“The trust requires witness authorization.”
Gabriel turned.
“Who?”
“Current Moretti controlling member.”
Luca.
He would never.
Matteo had signed useless page.
Bought time.
Daniel’s team entered side doors.
Gabriel fired.
Thomas tackled Sarah down.
Luca disarmed Gabriel.
Matteo pinned his uncle.
No one killed.
Good.
Red archive recovered.
They opened.
Tape one.
Salvatore ordering Sarah’s dosing.
Tape two.
Vittorio coaching Vanessa on incapacity language.
Tape three.
Gabriel discussing Matteo kidnapping.
Enough.
Then final tape.
ELENA / SARAH.
Luca played.
Elena’s voice:
“If Sarah survives, tell her I’m sorry.”
Sarah stared.
Then:
“The person who warned Salvatore about Sarah’s investigation was someone inside Luca’s home.”
Everyone went still.
Elena named:
Margaret Carter.
Mrs. Carter.
The housekeeper.
The woman who hired me.
The woman who protected Matteo tonight.
Luca stared.
“No.”
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Security hotel.
Matteo the boy was missing.
Mrs. Carter was gone.
Before entering the old chapel, Matteo Senior stopped Luca outside.
Rain ran down both their faces.
“You’re going to hit me.”
“Yes.”
“Can I explain first?”
“No.”
“Fair.”
Luca punched him.
Then hugged him.
After, both brothers stood awkwardly under the stone awning.
Matteo rubbed his jaw.
“You still punch like Dad.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“Never say that again.”
“Fair.”
Then Luca looked at him.
“Why?”
“You know why.”
“No.”
Matteo sighed.
“Because Salvatore said if I stayed, he would move against you.”
“So you left.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“You think that protected me?”
“At twenty-seven, yes.”
“And now?”
“No.”
Good.
Luca looked away.
Matteo continued.
“I watched you from Canada.”
“That’s creepy.”
“Thomas said same.”
“You knew Thomas.”
“Yes.”
“Sarah.”
“Yes.”
“Mom?”
“For a while.”
Luca laughed bitterly.
“Everyone had family meetings without me.”
Matteo almost smiled.
“You were watched hardest.”
“Why?”
“Because Salvatore knew you were the one who might choose people over the company.”
Luca stared.
“That was weakness to him.”
“Yes.”
“And to you?”
Matteo looked at chapel.
“Now? Strength.”
The brothers stood in silence.
Then Luca asked:
“Did you ever want to come home?”
“Every day.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Cowardice disguised as strategy.”
Luca looked at him.
That was new language in this family.
Honest.
He nodded.
“After this, no disappearing.”
Matteo laughed.
“Matteo Junior already made me promise over phone.”
“He’s smarter than us.”
“Easily.”
Then Gabriel called from inside.
“Are you two finished?”
Luca looked at Matteo.
“Uncle sounds irritated.”
“Good.”
They entered together.
Not protector and protected.
Brothers.
That mattered.
After Gabriel was restrained, Matteo Senior sat on chapel step.
Luca sat beside him.
Neither spoke.
Finally Matteo said:
“I named no children after you.”
Luca looked confused.
“What?”
“My son.”
“You have a son?”
Matteo winced.
“Bad timing.”
Luca stared.
“You have a son.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Montreal.”
“How old?”
“Six.”
Luca stood.
“You disappeared for eight years and built another family?”
“Not exactly.”
“Not exactly?”
Matteo raised hands.
“His mother and I were together briefly. She knows who I am. He knows me.”
“Does he know about us?”
“Yes.”
“Does he know you’re alive?”
“Yes.”
Luca exhaled.
At least one child had not been lied to about death.
“Name?”
“Leo.”
Luca sat again.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“Because Gabriel had my phone tapped.”
“Tonight before chapel.”
“I had about twelve other confessions queued.”
Fair.
Luca rubbed face.
“Any daughters?”
“No.”
“Other wives?”
“No.”
“Secret trusts?”
“No.”
“Dead people alive?”
Matteo considered.
“Probably.”
Luca laughed despite himself.
Then became serious.
“You’re bringing Leo to Chicago?”
“If his mother agrees.”
“Good.”
Matteo looked at him.
“You mean that?”
“Yes.”
“Even after everything?”
Luca stared at chapel.
“That’s why.”
Moretti children had spent generations being hidden.
He was done with that.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Matteo Junior missing.
Every trace of humor vanished.
They ran.
On the drive from the chapel, Matteo Senior kept looking at Luca.
Finally Luca said:
“What?”
“You changed.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Luca glanced over.
“That sounded painful.”
“It was.”
Matteo looked out window.
“The Luca I left would have killed Gabriel.”
“Maybe.”
“The Luca I came back to arrested him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Luca thought of Matteo Junior.
Sarah.
Claire.
Daniel.
Every person hurt by men who treated violence as proof of strength.
“Because dead men don’t answer questions.”
Matteo smiled faintly.
“And?”
“And my son watches me.”
That was the real answer.
Matteo nodded.
“Then maybe leaving did one useful thing.”
Luca looked at him.
“What?”
“It made both of us understand what not to become.”
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Matteo Junior was missing.
May you like
The lesson became immediate.
For once, both brothers moved without arguing. Whatever came next, they would face it awake, together, and without another lie between them.
