Chapter 7

For one second, nobody moved.
Then Daniel shot Salvatore’s gun hand.
Weapon flew.
Salvatore dropped.
I fell beside Luca.
Blood.
Shoulder.
Not chest.
Thank God.
He looked at me.
“Upload.”
I stared.
“What?”
“Do not stop it.”
Daniel tackled Salvatore.
Vittorio tried to reach terminal.
Thomas blocked him.
My father.
Alive.
Bruised.
Fighting the man who had haunted our lives.
Upload 22%.
Luca gritted teeth.
“Claire.”
“I’m here.”
“Upload.”
I looked at screen.
25%.
Vittorio shouted:
“You don’t know what’s there!”
Thomas hit him.
“I do.”
29%.
Daniel’s team secured room.
Salvatore cuffed.
Vittorio pinned.
Dr. Harris was not here.
A tactical medic pressed Luca’s shoulder.
“Through-and-through.”
Relief.
Painful but survivable.
Luca looked at me.
“Matteo.”
I called bunker.
Sarah answered instantly.
“Luca?”
“He’s alive.”
Matteo grabbed phone.
“Dad?”
Luca took it with bloodied hand.
“I’m okay.”
“You got shot?”
“Little.”
“That’s not a unit.”
Despite everything, Luca laughed.
Matteo cried.
“Come back.”
“I will.”
He looked at Sarah through video.
“I will.”
Upload 47%.
Vittorio stopped fighting.
He looked almost calm.
“That server is bait.”
Thomas froze.
“What?”
Vittorio smiled.
“You think I kept master archive in one location?”
Daniel looked at screen.
Network path.
Remote mirrors.
Maybe.
Vittorio continued.
“Release triggers second protocol.”
Sarah heard through phone.
Her face changed.
“What second protocol?”
Vittorio smiled.
“Dead man release.”
Salvatore looked at him.
Even he seemed surprised.
Luca saw.
“Whose?”
“Everyone’s.”
Thomas grabbed Vittorio.
“What did you do?”
Vittorio laughed.
“Every protected identity. Witness locations. medical aliases. hidden children.”
The archive release would expose innocent people too.
My stomach dropped.
Upload 58%.
Can it be stopped?
Thomas ran to terminal.
“Cancel.”
No option.
Daniel called Sarah.
“Can you isolate?”
She moved to bunker console.
“Maybe.”
60%.
Thomas looked at me.
“The key on Claire’s card can split evidence package.”
“How?”
“There are two release channels.”
I stared.
He had built it.
“Password?”
He looked at me.
“Your mother’s birthday.”
I entered.
0712.
New menu.
PUBLIC EVIDENCE.
PROTECTED IDENTITIES.
Select.
I disabled protected identities.
System asked second authorization.
THOMAS BENNETT.
He pressed thumb.
Accepted.
Upload resumed evidence only.
62%.
Vittorio screamed.
“No!”
Now fear.
Real.
Luca smiled despite pain.
“Better.”
Upload climbed.
Vale files.
Marcello edits.
Salvatore orders.
Police bribes.
Trust fraud.
All going out.
At 100%, every major document distributed to multiple independent recipients.
Not one institution.
Many.
Vittorio looked empty.
Salvatore looked old.
For first time, powerless.
Then Adrian Bellini was brought downstairs.
Vanessa held him.
He could barely stand.
She looked at Luca.
“I’m sorry.”
He said:
“Not now.”
Not forgiveness.
Not condemnation.
Later.
Federal agents arrived.
Not local.
Daniel had contacted a vetted task force through Sarah’s evidence network.
Vittorio arrested.
Salvatore arrested.
Vanessa voluntarily surrendered phone and documents.
Adrian hospitalized.
Thomas sat against wall.
I stood in front of him.
No idea what to say.
He looked up.
“Hi.”
I slapped him.
Hard.
Daniel looked away.
Luca, still being bandaged, said:
“Fair.”
Thomas touched cheek.
“Yes.”
I hit him again.
“That one was Mom.”
He nodded.
“Fair.”
Then I hugged him.
Angry.
Crying.
He held me like he had been waiting thirteen years.
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop saying that.”
He stopped.
Good.
Sarah and Matteo arrived later under escort.
Matteo ran to Luca.
Then stopped before hitting injured shoulder.
He awkwardly hugged waist.
Luca kissed his hair.
Sarah stood several feet away.
Luca looked at her.
Alive.
Real.
Too much history.
No time to fix.
But no longer hidden.
Vanessa watched.
She had no place in that picture.
She knew.
She looked at me.
“I hurt you.”
“Yes.”
“I thought if I scared you enough, you’d give me the phone.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t know Vittorio had tracked you.”
“That doesn’t make what you did smaller.”
“No.”
Good.
She looked at Luca.
“The wedding is over.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
No drama.
No ring throwing.
Just fact.
Then Sarah walked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa stiffened.
Sarah looked at bruises on me.
Then at Vanessa.
“You used fear because someone taught you fear was control.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“That explains it.”
Pause.
“It does not excuse it.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.”
Sarah turned away.
Matteo looked at her.
“Mom.”
She looked back.
He hesitated.
Then held out hand.
She took it.
Small.
Important.
At 4:18 a.m., we returned to Moretti estate.
Sapphire mirror still stood in blue salon.
Daniel wanted it destroyed.
Thomas said no.
“Evidence.”
Luca said:
“After trial, burn it.”
Matteo said:
“Can I smash it?”
Luca looked at him.
“Yes.”
The boy smiled for first time all night.
Then Daniel found one remaining memory card hidden deeper in frame.
Not connected to Marcello system.
Different encryption.
Label:
ELENA / FINAL.
Luca froze.
His mother.
They played.
Elena Moretti appeared.
Alive at time of recording.
“Luca.”
He sat.
“By the time you see this, Marcello’s trust should be broken.”
Then she looked away as if someone stood off-camera.
“I need you to know Salvatore was not the only Moretti who worked with Vittorio.”
Luca’s face changed.
Sarah frowned.
Matteo watched.
Elena continued.
“The person who gave Vittorio access to Matteo was someone you trusted more than me.”
Daniel went still.
Luca looked at him.
Daniel looked horrified.
Elena said:
“Daniel Rizzo.”
Silence.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Then video continued.
“But Daniel did not know what he was doing.”
Everyone looked back.
Elena:
“His father’s credentials were cloned.”
Daniel exhaled.
Not enough.
Elena continued.
“The clone was created by Matteo.”
Everyone froze.
The boy stared.
“What?”
Elena’s recording.
Created six years ago.
Matteo had been seven.
Impossible.
Then she clarified.
“Not your son.”
Luca stopped.
“Your brother Matteo.”
Silence.
Luca’s brother.
Dead eight years.
Sarah closed her eyes.
She knew.
Luca turned.
“You knew Matteo was alive.”
Sarah whispered:
“Yes.”
And Luca’s face broke all over again.
After the upload completed, the tactical medic wanted Luca taken out immediately.
Luca refused until Matteo was physically in front of him.
Not video.
Not phone.
In front of him.
Sarah arrived with the boy twenty minutes later.
Matteo walked into basement, saw blood on Luca’s shirt, and stopped.
His face went white.
Luca opened one arm.
“Come here.”
Matteo crossed distance carefully.
“You said little.”
“It is little.”
“There is blood everywhere.”
“Shoulder wounds are dramatic.”
Daniel muttered:
“He says, after getting shot.”
Matteo hugged Luca around waist.
Then looked at Salvatore in cuffs.
His grandfather.
Alive.
The man behind years of pain.
Salvatore looked back.
“Matteo.”
The boy stiffened.
Luca started to move.
Matteo stopped him.
“No.”
He looked at Salvatore.
“Did you know Mom was alive?”
Salvatore smiled faintly.
“Yes.”
Matteo’s eyes filled.
“Did you know she wanted to come home?”
“Yes.”
“Did you stop her?”
“Sometimes.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Matteo stared.
“Why?”
“Because family requires sacrifice.”
The boy looked at his father.
Then back.
“No.”
Salvatore’s smile faded.
Matteo continued.
“Family is who asks before sacrificing you.”
Silence.
Luca looked at him.
So did Sarah.
The rule had already formed.
Salvatore laughed softly.
“You’re young.”
“Good.”
Matteo took Luca’s uninjured hand.
“I don’t want to be like you.”
Salvatore looked away.
That was the first thing anyone said all night that truly hurt him.
Then Sarah walked to Salvatore.
“You poisoned me.”
He said nothing.
“That is yes.”
Luca’s face hardened.
Salvatore finally answered.
“I wanted you weak.”
Matteo flinched.
Sarah held herself steady.
“Why?”
“You were moving evidence.”
“Against Vale?”
“Yes.”
“And Marcello?”
“Yes.”
She laughed bitterly.
“So you ruined your son’s wife to protect business.”
Salvatore looked at Luca.
“I protected the family.”
Luca said:
“No.”
He looked at Matteo.
“You protected control.”
That distinction became the line between generations.
At the hospital after Luca’s wound was treated, Matteo refused to leave his room.
Sarah tried.
“No.”
Luca tried.
“No.”
Daniel tried.
Matteo stared.
Daniel said:
“Fair.”
So boy stayed.
Luca lay propped up, annoyed by sling.
Matteo sat beside bed.
“Dad.”
“Yeah?”
“If you had died—”
“I didn’t.”
“That’s not answer.”
Luca looked at him.
“You’re right.”
Matteo swallowed.
“If you had died, trust would have worked?”
“Maybe.”
“And Vanessa would get company?”
“Not anymore.”
“Because archive?”
“Yes.”
Matteo looked down.
“So Claire finding phone saved you.”
Luca stared toward hallway where Claire sat with Thomas.
“In more ways than one.”
Matteo nodded.
“Then pay her more.”
Luca blinked.
“What?”
“She almost got crushed by mirror. That’s hazard pay.”
Luca laughed, then winced at shoulder.
“Do not make me laugh.”
“Pay her.”
“Fine.”
“How much?”
“Go to sleep.”
Matteo smiled.
For first time since screaming in salon, he looked thirteen again.
Then Sarah entered with two coffees and orange tea.
Matteo looked at her.
“You remembered.”
She stopped.
“Of course.”
He took tea.
Small bridge.
No speech needed.
Before they left the hospital, Luca looked at Sarah.
“Stay with him tonight.”
Sarah glanced at Matteo.
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
That surprised her.
Luca continued.
“But I’m trying to stop making every decision because I’m afraid.”
Sarah nodded.
“So am I.”
Matteo looked between them.
“Good. Because both of you are bad at it.”
Daniel laughed from doorway.
“Accurate.”
Luca pointed.
“You are supposed to be working.”
“I am. This is morale.”
For one brief moment, the room felt almost normal.
May you like
Then Elena’s final recording played.
And normal disappeared again.
