Chapter 6

Luca did not react like a son seeing his dead father.

He reacted like a man confirming an enemy.

No shock.

No tears.

Only cold.

“Dad.”

Salvatore smiled.

“Still dramatic.”

Luca looked at Sarah.

“You knew.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Two years.”

Matteo stared at her.

“You knew Grandpa was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell Dad?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Because I was trying to track him.”

Matteo laughed bitterly.

“Everyone has reasons.”

Luca touched his shoulder.

The boy stepped away.

Not rejection.

Overload.

Fair.

On screen, Salvatore sat opposite my father.

Thomas looked at camera.

“Claire, do not trade anything.”

I moved closer to monitor.

“Dad.”

He could not hear me maybe.

Vittorio did.

He smiled.

“Midnight. Arbitration Center.”

Feed ended.

Vanessa sat.

“Why does he need me?”

Sarah looked at her.

“Because you are named petitioner on Luca’s incapacity filing.”

Vanessa went pale.

“I can withdraw.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Vittorio needs you to authenticate it.”

“I won’t.”

Sarah stared.

“He has something.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Everyone saw.

Luca said:

“What?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“Vanessa.”

She started crying.

“My brother.”

Silence.

“You have a brother?”

“Half-brother.”

“Name?”

“Adrian Bellini.”

Daniel searched.

No records.

Vanessa explained.

Helena had another child.

Hidden.

Vittorio had supported him financially.

Threatened him when Vanessa tried to back out.

Luca stared.

“So that’s leverage.”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

Sarah said:

“Probably alive.”

Matteo muttered:

“Not helpful.”

Daniel checked Marcello records.

One Adrian Bellini listed as patient at private psychiatric facility.

Vale Behavioral Center.

Of course.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“They told me he was in Europe.”

“He’s in Illinois.”

She started shaking.

Luca looked at her.

“You still don’t sign anything.”

She nodded.

“I won’t.”

“Even if they threaten him.”

Her face broke.

“I don’t know.”

Honest.

Luca accepted it.

Then he looked at me.

“You are not going.”

I stared.

“My father is there.”

“Yes.”

“So I’m going.”

“No.”

“Luca.”

It was first time I used his name without sir.

He noticed.

So did everyone.

I continued.

“My father is tied to a chair because he hid something with me.”

“You’re injured.”

“I can walk.”

“Barely.”

“That has never stopped anyone in this family from making bad decisions.”

Matteo coughed to hide laugh.

Luca stared.

Sarah said:

“She should go.”

He turned.

“Not helping.”

“Thomas trusts her.”

“Exactly why Marcello wants her.”

Sarah said:

“And exactly why he won’t expect her to understand the archive.”

I looked at her.

“What archive?”

“The master recording is not just audio.”

She took micro-SD.

“Thomas embedded an encryption key.”

Daniel frowned.

“For what?”

“A remote server.”

“Where?”

“Unknown.”

“What’s on it?”

“Everything.”

Marcello recordings.

Salvatore deals.

Vale medical files.

Edited and original versions.

Enough to destroy wedding trust fraud.

Maybe more.

Luca looked at me.

“If Claire carries card, she becomes target.”

Sarah nodded.

“She already is.”

Great.

Daniel cloned card.

Three copies.

One with Luca.

One Sarah.

One me.

Original stayed bunker.

Plan.

Arbitration Center had three entrances.

Daniel’s team outside.

No official police.

Marcello had judges.

Lawyers.

Cops maybe.

They would record everything.

So Luca decided to use it.

He wore a wire.

Vanessa too.

Claire too.

I stared at mic.

“Feels appropriate.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Matteo stayed bunker with Sarah.

He hated it.

Luca did not negotiate.

“You stay with your mother.”

Matteo crossed arms.

“She keeps leaving.”

Sarah flinched.

Luca said:

“Then make her stay.”

Matteo looked at Sarah.

She nodded.

“I’m staying.”

He accepted.

At 11:31 p.m., we entered Marcello Arbitration.

Marble.

Dark wood.

No public staff.

Vittorio waited in main chamber.

Salvatore beside him.

My father tied but conscious.

Vanessa stopped when she saw another man behind glass.

Adrian.

Her brother.

Alive.

Drugged-looking.

She whispered:

“Oh God.”

Vittorio smiled.

“Everyone brought family.”

Luca looked at Salvatore.

“You’re alive.”

“Clearly.”

“Why fake death?”

“Convenience.”

“What did you want from trust?”

“Continuity.”

Luca laughed.

“Say control.”

Salvatore smiled.

“Control.”

Vittorio placed documents on table.

Wedding trust.

Medical petition.

Recorded consent form.

“Sign.”

Luca sat.

“No.”

Vittorio looked at Vanessa.

“Petition.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian moved weakly behind glass.

Vanessa cried.

Vittorio said:

“Your brother returns to facility.”

She looked at Luca.

He did not tell her what to do.

Important.

Her choice.

Vanessa picked up petition.

Then tore it in half.

Vittorio’s face changed.

Good.

Salvatore sighed.

“You always were emotional.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You used a sixteen-year-old girl to spy on Elena.”

Everyone froze.

Luca turned.

Vanessa continued.

“My mother brought me to the estate at sixteen. You knew who I was. You put me near Luca years later because you thought I was controllable.”

Salvatore stared.

She had more truth.

Vittorio said:

“Enough.”

Vanessa looked at hidden cameras.

“No.”

She understood the room was recording.

She spoke clearly.

“Vittorio Marcello prepared a false incapacity petition against Luca Moretti and instructed me to conceal material terms of the wedding trust.”

Vittorio went pale.

Daniel listened remotely.

Got it.

Confession.

Luca looked at her.

She continued.

“He told me recordings from the sapphire mirror would be edited to support the petition.”

Salvatore stood.

“Stop.”

Vanessa laughed.

“No.”

Then Vittorio pulled a gun.

Everything changed.

I moved toward my father.

Vittorio pointed at me.

“Stay.”

Thomas shouted:

“Claire, floor!”

I dropped.

Gunshot.

Glass shattered.

Adrian’s enclosure.

Daniel’s team breached side door.

Chaos.

Luca tackled Salvatore.

Vanessa pulled Adrian down.

I crawled to Thomas.

Cut rope with broken glass.

My hands bled again.

He looked at me.

“You always were stubborn.”

I started crying.

“You were dead.”

“Later.”

Fair.

Vittorio ran toward archive room.

Thomas grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t let him delete server.”

Daniel heard.

“Where?”

Thomas pointed.

“Basement.”

Luca ran.

I followed.

Because apparently I had no sense.

Basement server room.

Vittorio at terminal.

Deletion 14%.

Luca hit him.

Gun dropped.

Vittorio fought hard.

Older than Luca but vicious.

I reached terminal.

Password required.

Thomas shouted from stairs:

“Claire! Pendant date!”

My father’s necklace.

Date engraved.

0817.

I entered.

Access granted.

Deletion paused.

Then screen showed:

RELEASE ARCHIVE?

YES / NO.

Luca looked at me.

Vittorio yelled:

“No!”

That was answer.

I pressed YES.

Upload began.

Vittorio’s face went white.

Salvatore appeared at stairwell with hidden gun.

He aimed at me.

Luca saw.

Moved.

Gunshot.

Luca jerked.

I screamed.

He fell.

Before leaving for the arbitration center, Luca stood alone with Vanessa near the bunker door.

I was close enough to hear.

Not by choice.

There were very few private corners in a bunker.

“You can stay,” Luca said.

Vanessa looked at him.

“And Adrian?”

“We find another way.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“No.”

She almost smiled.

“At least you stopped promising impossible things.”

Luca’s expression stayed hard.

“Why did you agree to the trust?”

Vanessa looked at floor.

“At first?”

“Yes.”

“Because I wanted security.”

“You had security.”

“I had your house.”

“That is not the same?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Sarah was everywhere. Matteo was yours. The company was yours. The staff respected you. I had a ring and a wedding date.”

“That was your choice.”

“I know.”

“Then?”

“Vittorio told me if I signed his version, I would never be removable.”

Luca stared.

“There.”

She nodded.

“The ugly truth.”

“You wanted control.”

“I wanted something no one could take away.”

“And you were willing to take it from my son.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

No defense.

Luca looked away.

That admission finally ended something.

Not just engagement.

The illusion underneath it.

Vanessa continued.

“Then Vittorio showed me Adrian.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“And after that?”

“I was afraid to stop.”

Luca nodded.

Two motives.

Ambition first.

Fear later.

Both true.

Vanessa asked:

“Do you hate me?”

He looked at her.

“I don’t know you well enough anymore.”

That hurt more than hate.

She nodded.

Then handed him her engagement ring.

He did not take it.

“Keep it until this is done.”

“Why?”

“If Vittorio sees it gone, he knows you’ve turned.”

She stared.

Then put it back on.

A tool now.

Not promise.

At the arbitration center, that ring helped Vittorio believe she would still sign.

Long enough for her to tear the petition in half.

On the way to Marcello Arbitration, Claire sat beside Thomas’s empty seat in the transport van.

It felt ridiculous.

He was alive.

Yet every memory still treated him as dead.

Luca sat across from her.

“You can back out.”

“No.”

“That was not a challenge.”

“I know.”

He studied her bandaged hands.

“Why are you still going?”

Claire looked out the window.

“Because if I stay behind, men like Vittorio keep deciding what I can handle.”

Luca nodded slowly.

He understood that too well.

She added:

“And because Dad spent thirteen years deciding for me.”

“Are you going to forgive him?”

“I haven’t even yelled properly yet.”

“Good.”

She looked at him.

“You?”

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Sarah?”

Luca looked toward front windshield.

“That’s different.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m angry she left.”

“And?”

“I’m grateful she survived.”

“And?”

He sighed.

“I still love her.”

Claire nodded.

“Complicated.”

“Very.”

Then she looked at engagement ring still on Vanessa’s hand.

“What about her?”

Luca’s face hardened.

“That ended before tonight.”

“Even if Vittorio manipulated her?”

“He manipulated choices.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“He did not make every choice for her.”

Vanessa heard.

May you like

Did not argue.

That mattered.
