Chapter 8

The word changed everything.
Voluntarily.
Adrian hadn't been taken.
He had walked away with Gabriel.
Luca returned to the estate before dawn.
His suit was torn.
Blood on one cuff.
Not his.
Vanessa came with him under federal guard.
She looked smaller without the red dress, diamonds, and perfect posture.
She wore a gray blanket around her shoulders.
When she saw me, she stopped.
"I'm sorry."
I didn't answer.
Not because I wanted to punish her.
Because I didn't know what an apology was worth yet.
Luca walked past us.
"Sophia. Study."
Matteo followed.
So did Naomi.
I started to leave.
Luca looked at me.
"You too."
Sophia sat across from Luca.
The photograph and letter were on the desk.
Vanessa remained near the door under guard.
Luca looked at Sophia.
"Start with my identity."
Sophia nodded.
"Twelve years ago, someone created digital authorization profiles in your name."
"For what?"
"Corporate directives. Private security requests. Transfers."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"That's not enough."
"I know."
She opened a folder she'd brought.
"Your mother hired me to audit the family's private entities after I ended our engagement."
Matteo looked at Luca.
"You never told me she worked for Mom."
Luca didn't look at him.
"I didn't know."
Sophia continued.
"We found orders authenticated with Luca's executive credentials."
Luca's face hardened.
"What orders?"
"Surveillance."
Pause.
"Blackmail."
Pause.
"One termination."
Matteo leaned forward.
"Mine."
Sophia nodded.
Luca looked sick.
"But I didn't authorize it."
"We know."
"How?"
"Because the order was submitted at 2:13 a.m. from a secure terminal in the Moretti headquarters."
"I was in London."
"Exactly."
Naomi asked:
"Who had access?"
Sophia looked at Matteo.
"Adrian."
Silence.
Matteo shook his head.
"No."
"Domenico too."
"Then it could have been Dom."
"Yes."
"Or Dad."
"Yes."
Luca stood and walked to the window.
Vanessa watched him.
I watched her.
She looked genuinely broken.
But broken people can still be dangerous.
Naomi turned to her.
"What did Gabriel tell you about Adrian?"
Vanessa hugged the blanket tighter.
"That Adrian wanted the archive destroyed."
"When?"
"Months ago."
Luca turned.
"Months?"
She nodded.
"Gabriel contacted me before our engagement became public."
My stomach tightened.
This had been going on almost the entire relationship.
"He told me my father had left evidence in a trust. He said your family stole everything from mine."
"So you targeted me."
"Yes."
Her voice cracked.
"At first."
Luca looked away.
She continued.
"Then Gabriel changed the plan. He stopped asking about the trust and started asking about your mother's things."
"The watch."
"Yes."
"When did Adrian enter the picture?"
"Three weeks ago."
Everyone froze.
Matteo looked at her.
"You saw him?"
"No. Gabriel showed me a photograph."
"What photograph?"
"Adrian in Chicago."
Luca's face hardened.
So Adrian had been back for at least three weeks.
Maybe longer.
Vanessa continued.
"Gabriel said Adrian was trying to recover the archive before Victor."
Sophia frowned.
"Why?"
"Because the archive proves Adrian authorized crimes."
Luca looked at Matteo.
"Which means Dad had a reason to work with Gabriel."
Matteo shook his head.
"Or Gabriel manipulated her."
Vanessa looked at him.
"He probably did."
At least she didn't pretend certainty.
Naomi's phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Then:
"We found the vehicle Adrian and Gabriel used."
"Where?" Luca asked.
"Near Lake Forest."
"Anything inside?"
"Blood. Two phones. One burned document."
"Whose blood?"
"Lab pending."
Matteo rubbed his face.
"This is going in circles."
I looked at the photograph from Elena.
Six people.
Adrian.
Domenico.
Victor.
Gabriel.
Sophia.
Elena.
Something bothered me.
"Why are there only six?"
Sophia frowned.
"What?"
"Where was Carlo Bellini?"
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
"He worked with them."
Sophia shook her head.
"Not yet."
"When did he join?"
"A year later."
"How?"
Sophia looked at Vanessa.
"Through Adrian."
Vanessa went pale.
"Your father was Adrian's accountant."
Luca stared.
Adrian again.
Every road led back to him.
Then Mrs. Carter entered.
She carried an old ledger.
"I found this in Elena's sewing cabinet."
Luca almost laughed from exhaustion.
"Did my mother hide evidence in every room?"
Mrs. Carter smiled sadly.
"Nearly."
The ledger wasn't financial.
It was personal.
Elena's handwriting.
Dates.
Names.
Meetings.
One entry jumped out.
APRIL 12 — ADRIAN MET G. AGAIN. SAYS LUC KNOWS. I DON'T BELIEVE HIM.
Luc.
Luca.
Matteo pointed.
"Dad claimed Luca knew."
Luca turned.
"About what?"
We read further.
APRIL 18 — VICTOR WANTS MATTEO REMOVED FROM BOARD ACCESS. ADRIAN AGREES.
Matteo's face hardened.
APRIL 19 — LUCA'S CREDENTIALS USED AGAIN.
APRIL 20 — I CONFRONTED ADRIAN.
APRIL 21 — HE SWORE HE WOULD FIX IT.
APRIL 23 — MATTEO'S PLANE SCHEDULE CHANGED.
Matteo whispered:
"Dad changed the flight."
Luca stared.
"Why?"
Then the next entry.
APRIL 24 — ADRIAN SAYS HE WILL FLY WITH MATTEO.
Matteo went silent.
Maybe Adrian had discovered the assassination plan and boarded the plane to protect him.
Or maybe he had been part of it.
The last entry was worse.
APRIL 25 — IF THEY BOTH DIE, DOMENICO TAKES CONTROL. IF THEY LIVE, VICTOR WILL HUNT THEM.
Sophia looked at Luca.
"Your mother knew the crash was coming."
"Why didn't she stop them?"
Mrs. Carter answered quietly.
"She tried."
Everyone looked at her.
"She called the airport."
"What happened?"
"The flight had already left."
Luca sat down.
For the first time, he looked exhausted rather than angry.
Then Naomi's phone rang again.
She listened.
Her face changed.
"We have a positive blood match from the abandoned vehicle."
Matteo stood.
"Whose?"
"Gabriel's."
Luca looked up.
"And Adrian?"
"No Adrian blood."
Naomi continued.
"There's more."
"What?"
"We recovered one phone."
"From who?"
"Registered to a shell company. But call history includes a number we've been monitoring."
Matteo stepped closer.
"Whose?"
Naomi looked at him.
"Domenico's."
Luca laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
"And another number."
She looked at Vanessa.
"Your father's witness-protection handler."
Vanessa froze.
"My father is dead."
"Yes."
"Then why call his handler?"
"We don't know."
Sophia said:
"Maybe Carlo left something with him."
Naomi nodded.
"We're bringing him in."
The handler's name was Henry Cole.
Retired U.S. Marshal.
Seventy-two.
Living in Milwaukee.
Before Naomi could arrange contact, Daniel entered.
"Sir."
He looked shaken.
"What?"
"Someone is at the east gate."
Luca's hand went toward his gun.
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Carlo Bellini."
Vanessa stood so fast the blanket fell.
"No."
Daniel held up a tablet.
Camera feed.
An elderly man stood outside the gate.
Thin.
Gray hair.
Cane.
Vanessa walked toward the screen.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Dad?"
The man looked directly into the camera.
Then held up a piece of paper.
LET ME IN BEFORE ADRIAN FINDS ME.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Luca looked at Naomi.
"Your records said Carlo died."
"They do."
Sophia whispered:
"Another ghost."
The gate remained closed.
Naomi sent agents first.
They searched Carlo.
No weapon.
He carried one envelope.
One flash drive.
One photograph.
Vanessa met him in the foyer.
She stopped ten feet away.
He stared at her.
She whispered:
"You're dead."
Carlo started crying.
"So are half the people in this family."
She crossed the distance and hit him.
Hard.
Then she hugged him.
He held her like he'd been waiting eleven years.
Luca watched.
No expression.
When Carlo finally sat in the study, Naomi began questioning.
"Who killed the man buried under your name?"
Carlo looked at her.
"A prisoner in federal custody. Similar age. No family."
"You're saying the government faked your death?"
"My handler did."
"Henry Cole?"
Carlo nodded.
"Why?"
"Because Victor had penetrated witness protection."
Vanessa looked at him.
"Why didn't you contact me?"
"I tried."
"When?"
"Every birthday."
She stared.
"I never got anything."
Carlo looked at Adrian's name in Elena's ledger.
"Because Adrian intercepted them."
Luca went still.
"You know that how?"
Carlo pulled out the photograph.
It showed Adrian.
Standing outside a post office.
Holding a stack of envelopes.
Vanessa's childhood address written across the top one.
Carlo said:
"Adrian Moretti wasn't hiding from Gabriel."
He looked at Luca.
"Gabriel was hiding from Adrian."
Nobody spoke.
Then Carlo placed the flash drive on the desk.
"This is why."
Naomi inserted it into an isolated laptop.
A video opened.
Security footage.
Date: seven years ago.
Airport hangar.
Adrian stood beside a plane.
Gabriel approached him.
No sound.
Then Adrian handed Gabriel a folder.
Gabriel read it.
Nodded.
Adrian pointed toward the aircraft Matteo was about to board.
Vanessa whispered:
"No."
Matteo stepped closer.
Adrian shook Gabriel's hand.
Then boarded the plane with his son.
Luca stared.
"What did he give him?"
Carlo answered.
"The kill order."
Matteo's face went white.
"Why would Dad board a plane he ordered destroyed?"
Carlo looked at him.
"Because the plane wasn't supposed to crash."
Silence.
"It was supposed to divert."
"To where?"
"Canada."
"Why?"
Carlo looked at Luca.
"To make Adrian and Matteo disappear."
Luca frowned.
"Then who caused the crash?"
Carlo's answer was quiet.
"Domenico."
The room shifted again.
Adrian had ordered a disappearance.
Domenico turned it into murder.
Gabriel helped both.
Victor manipulated everyone.
No one was clean.
Then Carlo added:
"And Adrian didn't do it to save Matteo."
Matteo stared.
"Then why?"
"To frame Luca."
Luca stopped breathing.
May you like
Carlo looked at him.
"Your father planned to make the world believe you ordered your brother's disappearance."
