Chapter 1

The man stopped beneath the chandelier.
For three full seconds, nobody at the table spoke.
Luca did not blink.
Neither did Vanessa.
I stood near the end of the dining room with one hand pressed against my injured shoulder, trying to understand why Luca looked less surprised than everyone else.
The stranger was in his late fifties, maybe early sixties. Tall. Silver hair. Dark overcoat. His face was unfamiliar to me, but the ring on his right hand was impossible to miss.
Heavy gold.
Black stone.
A tiny letter M carved into the center.
I had seen the same ring in the portrait above Luca's study fireplace.
His father had been wearing it.
"Luca," the man said.
Luca's voice was flat.
"Take off the ring."
The stranger glanced down at his hand.
Then smiled.
"Still observant."
"Take it off."
Vanessa stepped away from the table.
"This is not what it looks like."
Luca looked at her.
"I haven't decided what it looks like yet."
The stranger removed the ring slowly and placed it on the nearest side table.
Luca didn't touch it.
"Who are you?"
The man looked almost offended.
"You know who I am."
"No."
"You know my name."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"Say it."
The stranger turned toward me for a moment.
His eyes paused on my torn sleeve.
Then returned to Luca.
"Adrian Moretti."
The room changed.
One of the guests whispered something.
Another stood.
Luca's hand closed around the back of his chair.
"That was my father's name."
"It still is."
A cold feeling moved through my stomach.
Luca took one step forward.
"My father died in a plane crash."
Adrian's smile disappeared.
"The plane crashed."
Luca stopped.
"Not the same thing."
Vanessa shut her eyes.
Just for a second.
But Luca saw that too.
"What did you know?" he asked her.
She shook her head.
"Nothing."
The black phone on the table vibrated again.
Everyone looked at it.
Luca picked it up.
Another message.
HE'S INSIDE. KEEP LUCA CALM.
Luca raised his eyes to Adrian.
"Who sent that?"
Adrian looked toward Vanessa.
She backed away.
"Don't."
"Don't what?" Luca asked.
"Turn this into something it isn't."
He laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
"My dead brother texts a secret phone. My dead father walks into my dining room wearing his own ring. And my fiancée attacks a member of my staff because she found the phone."
Vanessa pointed at me.
"She stole it."
"I found it."
Her eyes flashed.
"You went through my things."
"It was under a table."
"You had no right—"
"Enough," Luca said.
The word cracked through the room.
Vanessa went silent.
Luca looked at Adrian.
"If you're my father, prove it."
Adrian reached inside his coat.
Three of Luca's security men moved instantly.
Hands beneath jackets.
Adrian froze.
"Easy."
"Slowly," Luca said.
Adrian removed a small envelope.
Old.
Cream colored.
He placed it on the table.
Luca stared at it.
"What is that?"
"Something I wrote the night before your twenty-first birthday."
Luca didn't move.
Adrian continued.
"You were angry because I refused to let you take the Ferrari to Wisconsin."
Luca's expression shifted.
Just barely.
"You punched a hole in the wall of the west garage."
Nobody spoke.
"You thought I never noticed. I did."
Luca's face hardened again.
"That proves you had access to family information."
Adrian nodded.
"Fair."
Then he said quietly:
"Your mother called you Luc when she was frightened."
Luca stopped breathing.
Adrian's voice softened.
"And only when she was frightened."
I watched Luca's hand tremble once.
Then stop.
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
"You weren't supposed to do this here."
Luca turned.
"What?"
She went pale.
Adrian looked at her with open irritation.
"Vanessa."
"What did she mean?" Luca asked.
Neither answered.
Luca picked up the black phone.
"Daniel."
His security chief appeared from the hallway almost immediately.
"Lock the estate."
Vanessa stared.
"Luca."
"No one leaves."
One of the guests protested.
"Now wait a minute—"
"Daniel will arrange transportation after everyone gives a statement."
The room erupted.
Luca ignored it.
He looked at me.
"Mia."
I straightened.
"Yes, sir?"
"Sit down."
"I'm fine."
"You're bleeding."
I glanced at my shoulder.
A thin red line had soaked through the torn fabric again.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Of course. Protect the maid."
Luca looked at her.
"Right now she's the only person in this room who told me the truth."
That shut her up.
Mrs. Carter, the head housekeeper, came to my side and guided me into a chair near the wall.
I didn't want to sit.
I wanted to disappear.
But disappearing was impossible now.
Adrian moved toward the table.
Luca stopped him with one look.
"Where is Matteo?"
The question landed harder than anything else.
Adrian hesitated.
Luca stepped closer.
"You walked into my house under my father's name. You knew about the phone. You knew Vanessa."
His voice dropped.
"So tell me where my brother is."
Adrian looked tired suddenly.
"Alive."
Luca's face became unreadable.
"Where?"
"I can't tell you yet."
Luca grabbed him by the coat.
Several guests gasped.
Adrian didn't fight back.
"Seven years," Luca said.
His voice was low and shaking.
"I buried an empty casket because there was nothing left to identify."
"I know."
"You stood beside me at the cemetery?"
"No."
"My mother died believing her husband and youngest son were dead."
Adrian shut his eyes.
"I know."
Luca shoved him away.
"Then you don't get to tell me what you can and cannot say."
The black phone vibrated.
Again.
Luca looked down.
This message was different.
NO SIGNATURE. ABORT THE TRANSFER.
His face changed.
"What transfer?" he asked.
Vanessa stared at the floor.
Adrian's shoulders stiffened.
Luca looked between them.
"What transfer?"
Adrian answered.
"The company."
"What about it?"
"Your controlling shares."
Luca went still.
Vanessa whispered, "Adrian."
But he continued.
"The documents Vanessa wanted you to sign tonight would have moved temporary voting control of Moretti Holdings into a trust."
Luca turned toward her.
She shook her head rapidly.
"It was just for the merger."
"What trust?"
She didn't answer.
Adrian did.
"The Bell Foundation."
Silence.
I knew almost nothing about Luca's business.
But I knew Vanessa's last name.
Bellini.
Not Bell.
Still, something in Luca's face told me he understood.
"The Bell Foundation doesn't exist anymore," he said.
Adrian nodded.
"Publicly."
Luca pulled out his phone.
"Daniel."
"Yes, boss?"
"Get legal on the line. Now."
Vanessa took another step backward.
Daniel noticed.
So did Luca.
"Don't move."
She looked at him.
"You cannot seriously believe this man."
"I don't."
She seemed relieved.
Then Luca added:
"I don't believe you either."
Her face collapsed.
A security officer entered.
"Sir?"
"What?"
"We found a vehicle at the north service road."
Adrian's expression changed.
"What vehicle?"
The guard looked at Luca.
"Black SUV. Engine running. No driver."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Luca noticed.
"Search it."
"Already did."
"And?"
The guard hesitated.
"There's blood in the back seat."
The room went silent.
Adrian moved first.
"How much?"
The guard looked at him.
"Enough."
Adrian swore under his breath.
Luca grabbed his arm.
"Whose blood?"
"I don't know."
"You know something."
Adrian pulled free.
"I know Matteo was supposed to be in that vehicle."
Luca stared at him.
My skin went cold.
Vanessa backed into the table.
A wineglass tipped over.
Nobody looked at it.
Luca stepped closer to Adrian.
"Start talking."
Adrian's face had gone gray.
"We were supposed to meet at eight-thirty. Matteo had evidence."
"Evidence of what?"
"The reason we disappeared."
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"You expect me to believe you chose to disappear?"
"No."
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
"We were forced."
Her lips parted.
"Don't put this on me."
"I'm not."
Adrian's voice was suddenly hard.
"I'm putting it on your father."
Vanessa froze.
Luca looked at her.
"Your father is dead."
She whispered:
"So is yours."
Nobody breathed.
Adrian laughed once.
"Apparently death is unreliable in this family."
Vanessa looked at the doors.
Luca noticed.
"Daniel."
The security chief stepped beside her.
She snapped, "Don't touch me."
Daniel didn't.
He didn't need to.
Adrian looked at Luca.
"Seven years ago your brother found irregular payments inside Moretti Holdings. Shell companies. Fake consulting contracts. Insurance transfers."
Luca's face sharpened.
"How much?"
"At first? Twelve million."
"At first?"
"Then we found more."
"How much more?"
Adrian hesitated.
"Over six hundred million."
The guests began murmuring.
Luca didn't move.
"Who stole it?"
Adrian looked toward Vanessa.
Not at her.
Past her.
Toward the doorway.
I followed his eyes.
An older man stood there.
I had seen him once before.
At Luca and Vanessa's engagement dinner.
Vanessa's father.
Carlo Bellini.
He smiled.
"Adrian."
Vanessa whispered:
"Dad."
Luca slowly turned.
Carlo Bellini stepped into the dining room as if he'd been invited.
"Looks like we finally ran out of time."
Luca stared at him.
"My brother."
Carlo sighed.
"Still asking the wrong question."
"Where is he?"
Carlo reached into his pocket.
Security moved.
He raised both hands.
"Phone."
Daniel took it.
On the screen was a live video.
A dark room.
A chair.
A man tied to it.
Blood running from his temple.
Luca stopped breathing.
The man's head lifted.
His face was older than the photographs I had seen.
Thinner.
Scar along his jaw.
But the resemblance to Luca was unmistakable.
Matteo Moretti looked into the camera.
"Luca."
Luca took the phone.
His hand shook.
"Matteo?"
The screen flickered.
Matteo tried to smile.
"You always were slow."
Luca's eyes filled with something I couldn't name.
"Where are you?"
Before Matteo could answer, someone behind the camera struck him.
The image jerked.
Luca's face changed instantly.
"Don't touch him."
Carlo smiled.
"Then sign."
Vanessa whispered:
"Dad, stop."
Carlo looked at her.
"You started this."
Her face crumpled.
Luca looked between them.
"What does he want me to sign?"
Carlo pointed toward the leather folder beside Vanessa's plate.
I had seen it before dinner.
Vanessa had guarded it all evening.
Luca opened it.
Inside were twelve pages.
His eyes moved over the first page.
Then the second.
His expression hardened.
"This transfers voting control."
"Temporarily."
"To you."
"To a trust."
"Controlled by you."
Carlo smiled.
"Semantics."
Luca looked at the video.
Matteo's head had dropped again.
"How long?"
Carlo checked his watch.
"Ten minutes."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Carlo, don't."
Carlo looked at him.
"You had seven years to stop me."
Then his eyes moved to me.
And stayed there.
I felt the blood leave my face.
"Interesting," he said.
Luca turned.
"What?"
Carlo pointed.
"Ask your maid what else she found in the study."
My heart stopped.
Luca looked at me.
"Mia?"
I couldn't speak.
Because he was right.
The phone wasn't the only thing I had found.
Beneath the same table, taped to the underside of the wood, had been a tiny silver key.
And in the rush, fear, and pain—
I had slipped it into my apron.
Carlo smiled.
"Give Luca the key."
Vanessa stared at me.
Adrian stared at me.
Luca came closer.
"What key?"
Slowly, I reached into my pocket.
And placed it in his palm.
A number was engraved along the side.
317.
Adrian went white.
Luca looked at him.
"What?"
Adrian whispered:
"That's Matteo's vault key."
Carlo checked his watch again.
May you like
"Nine minutes."
Then every light in the mansion went out.
