Chapter 5

"He's alive."
The medic said it twice before Luca seemed to hear him.
"He's alive."
Adrian had lost blood, but the bullet had missed his heart.
Barely.
Daniel's team moved him to the nearest trauma center under heavy guard.
Domenico and Gabriel escaped.
Again.
But now we had something they didn't know we had.
The black card.
ELENA.
Luca held it beneath the hospital lights.
"No chip."
Matteo took it.
"No magnetic strip."
"It looks like plastic."
"It's not."
Matteo flexed it gently.
"Composite."
Daniel examined it.
"Maybe optical storage."
Luca looked at me.
"How did it get in your apron?"
"I don't know."
"You didn't feel someone put it there?"
"No."
Then I remembered Mrs. Carter helping me after dinner.
Her hands near my shoulder.
Adjusting the torn fabric.
I looked at Luca.
"Mrs. Carter."
He called immediately.
She answered from the estate.
When he asked, she was silent.
Then:
"Your mother gave it to me eleven years ago."
Luca closed his eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
"Why put it on Mia?"
"Because Gabriel was searching staff before the blackout."
"You could have told me."
"I didn't know who to trust."
"You've known me since I was born."
Mrs. Carter's voice softened.
"Exactly."
Luca went still.
"What does that mean?"
"Your mother told me that if Adrian ever returned, the danger had returned too."
Matteo looked at the phone.
"She knew Dad survived?"
"No."
Mrs. Carter hesitated.
"She suspected."
Luca looked toward the intensive-care doors.
"How?"
"Because three months after the crash, she received a birthday card in Adrian's handwriting."
Adrian had been alive.
Their mother had known.
Maybe.
Luca's face hardened.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"Because the card contained a warning."
"What warning?"
"Trust no Moretti."
Nobody spoke.
Matteo leaned against the wall.
"That's cheerful."
Mrs. Carter continued.
"She gave me the black card the week before she died. She said if anyone ever came looking for the key, I should hide the card on someone outside the family."
Luca looked at me.
"So you picked Mia."
"Gabriel didn't know her."
"He does now."
"I know."
Mrs. Carter's voice broke.
"I'm sorry."
I took the phone.
"You saved it."
Silence.
Then she said quietly:
"I hope so."
Before anyone moved, Priya stopped the video on Elena's final frame.
"There's something else in the image."
Luca turned back.
She enlarged the reflection in the nursery window. At first all I could see was the lamp, the curtain, and Elena's thin silhouette.
Then another shape appeared behind the camera.
A man's hand.
A gold watch.
Adrian's watch.
Matteo stared.
"Dad was there when she recorded it?"
Priya shook her head.
"Not necessarily. Reflections are tricky."
Sophia wasn't with us, but Daniel had pulled up old photographs on his tablet. The watch matched the one Adrian had worn almost every day before the crash.
Luca's face hardened.
"If he was there, then he knew the recording existed."
"And if he knew," Matteo said, "he could have changed it after Mom died."
Priya nodded.
"That would explain the later modification."
I looked at the black card.
"So the card may contain both Elena's truth and somebody else's lie."
"Exactly," Priya said.
That scared me more than a fake recording would have.
A complete lie was easier to reject.
A truth with one poisoned sentence buried inside it could destroy a family before anyone realized where the poison started.
Luca seemed to understand the same thing.
"From now on, nobody treats anything in these files as fact until it's verified independently."
Matteo leaned against the table.
"That's the smartest thing anyone in this family has said tonight."
Luca looked at him.
"You're welcome."
For the first time since Adrian had been shot, Matteo smiled.
It lasted less than a second.
Then Daniel's phone rang with the report from the estate, and the room changed again.
We ended the call.
Luca stared at the card.
"What does it open?"
Matteo turned it under the light.
"Maybe not open. Maybe read."
Daniel called a cybersecurity specialist.
Two hours later, we were in a secure conference room beneath the hospital.
The specialist arrived carrying three cases of equipment.
Her name was Dr. Priya Shah.
She was forty-something, exhausted, and unimpressed by billionaires, armed guards, or family resurrection.
Good.
She examined the card.
"Photonic polymer."
Matteo blinked.
"In English."
"It stores data using microscopic light patterns."
"How much?"
"Depends on density."
"Can you read it?"
"Maybe."
Luca leaned forward.
"How long?"
She looked at him.
"Longer if you keep asking."
Matteo smiled.
"I like her."
Luca did not.
Priya placed the card inside a scanner.
Lines of data appeared.
Encrypted.
Then one file name.
ELENA_FINAL.
Luca stopped moving.
Priya opened it.
Password required.
Hint:
WHAT DID I CALL THE BOY WHO NEVER CAME HOME?
Matteo stared.
Luca looked at him.
"That means you."
Matteo shook his head.
"Mom called me dozens of things."
"Mostly criminal."
"Helpful."
I watched them argue through memories.
Matty.
Teo.
Little wolf.
Trouble.
Moon boy.
Then Luca went quiet.
"What?"
Matteo looked at him.
"After the crash."
Luca's voice changed.
"Mom kept your room untouched."
Matteo swallowed.
Luca continued.
"Sometimes I'd hear her talking in there."
"What did she say?"
"'My wandering boy.'"
Matteo closed his eyes.
Priya typed WANDERINGBOY.
Incorrect.
She tried MYWANDERINGBOY.
Correct.
The file opened.
A video appeared.
Elena Moretti sat in the old nursery.
Thin.
Head wrapped in a scarf.
Cancer had already changed her.
But her eyes were sharp.
Luca stopped breathing.
"Mom."
The recording began.
"If you're seeing this, then one of two things has happened. Either I was wrong about Adrian and Matteo being alive..."
She paused.
"Or I was right, and they have finally come home."
Matteo covered his mouth.
Elena continued.
"Luca, if you are watching, I am sorry."
His face collapsed slightly.
"I lied to you because I believed the truth would put you in danger."
She explained the card.
The files.
Gabriel Voss.
Domenico.
Carlo Bellini's real father.
Corporate accounts.
Judges.
Police.
Private contractors.
Then she said something none of us expected.
"Adrian did not create Gabriel's network."
Adrian had claimed he did.
Luca's expression hardened.
"Then who?"
Elena answered from the screen.
"My brother."
Matteo frowned.
"Mom's brother?"
Luca whispered:
"Uncle Victor."
I had never heard the name.
Elena continued.
"Victor Halden built the first network through Halden Risk Group. Adrian financed pieces of it without understanding the full structure. When he discovered what Victor was doing, he tried to leave."
Luca looked at Matteo.
"Halden."
Matteo was pale.
"Gabriel worked for Halden."
Elena leaned closer to the camera.
"Victor is not dead."
Luca stood.
"What?"
Matteo whispered:
"He died before I was born."
"Apparently not."
Elena continued.
"Every death around this network has served the same purpose: erase identity, move assets, create ghosts."
The phrase stayed with me.
Create ghosts.
Adrian.
Matteo.
Carlo.
Maybe Victor.
Then the video changed.
Elena held up a photograph.
Four men.
Adrian.
Domenico.
Carlo Bellini.
And a fourth man.
Tall.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
Even older in the photograph, I recognized him.
Gabriel.
Except Elena said:
"The man you know as Gabriel Voss is Victor Halden."
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa's fake father.
The security fixer.
The man chasing the files.
He was Luca and Matteo's maternal uncle.
Their mother's brother.
Matteo sat down.
"Jesus."
Luca looked sick.
The video continued.
"Victor believes the Moretti company belongs to him because his money helped save it during the recession. He will try to take control legally if possible. Illegally if necessary."
Elena looked directly into the camera.
"Do not give him the company."
Then she held up another object.
A silver flash drive.
"The evidence on this card is incomplete. The original archive is stored somewhere Victor will never think to search."
Luca whispered:
"Where?"
Elena smiled sadly.
"With Luca."
He stared.
"What?"
She continued.
"Luca, I gave it to you before your wedding that never happened."
Matteo looked at him.
"What wedding?"
Luca didn't answer.
Elena said:
"You thought it was a cufflink case."
Luca's face changed.
He remembered.
"My first engagement."
Matteo stared.
"To Sophia?"
Luca stood.
"I still have it."
"Where?"
"My apartment downtown."
Daniel immediately started giving orders.
Elena's recording wasn't finished.
"One more thing."
Everyone stopped.
"If Vanessa Bellini is with you, she deserves the truth about her father."
Vanessa wasn't there.
She was under guard at the estate.
But Luca listened.
"Carlo Bellini did not die in a boating accident."
A document appeared on screen.
A photograph.
Carlo in a hospital bed.
Date: six years after his supposed death.
"He survived and entered witness protection."
Matteo leaned forward.
"What?"
Elena said:
"Victor found him."
Another photo.
A grave.
"Carlo died three years later."
Vanessa had believed her father died eleven years ago.
Then believed Gabriel was tied to his hidden money.
But the truth was stranger.
Elena continued.
"Before Carlo died, he gave federal investigators one name."
A document filled the screen.
CONFIDENTIAL INFORMANT STATEMENT.
SUBJECT: DOMENICO MORETTI.
Luca stared.
His uncle.
Not Gabriel.
Domenico.
Then Elena said:
"Victor is dangerous."
Pause.
"But Domenico is worse."
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
"What?"
Luca turned.
Daniel looked at him.
"Someone attacked the estate."
Luca stood.
"Who?"
"Unknown."
"Mrs. Carter?"
"Missing."
My stomach dropped.
"Vanessa?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Missing too."
Luca swore.
Then another phone rang.
Mine.
Unknown number.
I answered before anyone could stop me.
Vanessa's voice whispered:
"Mia?"
She sounded terrified.
"Where are you?"
"I don't know."
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Mrs. Carter?"
"She's with me."
Luca took the phone.
"Vanessa."
She started crying.
"Luca, listen to me."
"Where are you?"
"I don't know. They put us in a van."
"Who?"
"I only saw one."
"Who?"
She whispered:
"Your uncle."
Luca's eyes hardened.
"Domenico?"
"No."
Silence.
Then:
"Victor."
The call ended.
Matteo looked at Luca.
"If Victor has Vanessa, then Gabriel—"
"Is Victor," Luca said.
"No."
Matteo shook his head.
"That video was wrong."
We stared.
"What?"
Matteo looked terrified.
"I met Victor once."
"When?"
"After the crash."
"And?"
May you like
He swallowed.
"Gabriel was standing beside him."
