Chapter 7

Five years after Lucia was taken, she was five.

She knew nothing about the switch.

Not yet.

She knew she had been born at St. Catherine’s.

She knew Dad hated hospital bracelets.

She thought that was funny.

Then one day at pediatric visit, nurse printed temporary wristband.

Lucia held it up.

“Daddy, look.”

Luca froze for half second.

Then smiled.

“Looks good.”

He did not inspect weight.

Progress.

Then Matteo Bellini’s children met Lucia at a charity picnic.

No one explained genetic weirdness.

They were just family acquaintances.

Good.

Then Daniel Russo’s daughter Claire became Lucia’s occasional friend.

The two babies switched that night.

Now kindergarteners.

Parents watched them share crayons.

Vanessa whispered:

“This is strange.”

Elena Russo:

“Yes.”

Then:

“Let it be strange.”

Good.

No forced symbolic sisterhood.

Then Luca’s legal identity.

He chose not to amend birth certificate parent names? Could be court added biological annotation separately while legal parents remain Sofia/Carlo. Laws vary. Better:

A court sealed biological parentage finding while original legal birth certificate remained unchanged because Carlo and Sofia were his legal parents at birth.

Luca wanted that.

Good.

Clara understood.

Then one genealogist offered to “correct” family tree publicly.

Luca refused.

Private tree could show both:

raised by Carlo/Sofia.

biological child of Adrian/Clara.

Complex.

Then one Moretti cousin still called Matteo the “blood heir.”

Luca removed him from a committee? Not for words. He told him stop.

When he didn't, Matteo himself said:

“I’m a cardiologist. Find another fantasy.”

Good.

Then family company moved away from heritage branding.

No “bloodline.”

Board governance.

Good.

Then Vanessa’s relationship with Daniel.

Biological siblings if Victor/Maria parents. She chose to explore.

Coffee.

Awkward.

Daniel said:

“I don’t need another family.”

Vanessa:

“I’m not asking.”

Then:

“I just wanted to meet you without a hospital crisis.”

Good.

They occasionally spoke.

Matteo Bellini—Vanessa's legal brother perhaps? If Vanessa is younger daughter of Victor/Maria, Matteo was raised as her brother. She keeps that too.

So Vanessa has one legal brother Matteo and one biological brother Daniel.

No need choose.

Good.

Then Adrian’s legacy.

Daniel struggled most.

He had surname Russo.

Father who raised him became convicted kidnapper.

Should he change surname?

No.

His wife Elena said:

“It’s your name.”

He kept.

Names belong to people, not only fathers.

Then Luca heard and smiled.

Same.

Then Lucia started asking:

“Why is Uncle Matteo named Bellini if he looks like Grandpa Carlo in pictures?”

Uh-oh.

Children notice.

They chose age-appropriate truth.

“Sometimes babies went home with the wrong families a long time ago.”

Lucia:

“Like lost luggage?”

Vanessa winced.

Luca:

“Not exactly.”

Then:

“Did that happen to me?”

Silence.

They said:

“For a few hours, someone tried.”

She looked scared.

Vanessa held her.

“You came home.”

Good.

Then no more details.

Later therapist helped prepare fuller story.

Then Lucia asked:

“Was the other baby okay?”

“Claire is okay.”

Good.

Child concern.

Then she and Claire met next week and Lucia whispered:

“We were mixed up.”

Claire:

“My mom told me.”

Then both returned to dolls.

Children can metabolize what adults turn into epics.

Then Luca’s annual physical.

Genetic family history now Russo, not Moretti.

Doctor asked.

He had to update risk profile.

That was one practical area biology mattered.

He found one inherited cardiac rhythm condition from Russo line.

Mild.

Monitoring.

Important.

Biology can matter medically without defining family.

Matteo inherited Moretti clotting tendency.

Daniel inherited Bellini cholesterol issue.

All three benefited from corrected genetics.

Good.

Then Clara said:

“At least truth helped something.”

Yes.

Then Vanessa had another pregnancy? Could create fear. Maybe no need. But perhaps powerful to show hospital return.

Let's have second child years later? That might let healing.

Vanessa became pregnant again.

Fear intense.

They considered different hospital.

Chose St. Catherine’s anyway after reforms? Maybe.

She said:

“I don’t want Adrian choosing where I give birth for the rest of my life.”

Good.

Second baby boy born safely.

Name Carlo? No, too loaded. Name Leo.

Bracelets checked normally.

No switch.

Luca held Leo.

Nurse joked:

“Weight seven pounds even.”

Luca laughed.

Good.

Then Lucia met brother.

No silver bracelet panic.

Family expanded beyond one crime.

Important.

Then Luca looked at Vanessa.

“Correct baby?”

She stared.

Then laughed so hard she cried.

Dark humor.

Healing.

Nurse had no idea.

Good.

The second pregnancy was managed with a written infant-identification plan created by hospital staff, not Luca’s private security.

Leo’s uneventful birth gave Vanessa and Luca a new hospital memory that did not require pretending the first trauma never happened.

Lucia’s question about whether Adrian counted as a grandfather was answered without forcing a title she did not want.

Daniel and Vanessa’s occasional sibling contact developed separately from Matteo, whom Vanessa continued to regard as the brother she grew up with.

The family’s genetic findings were shared with physicians only when medically relevant, limiting unnecessary exposure.
