Chapter 2

Dr. Adrian Russo had been a neonatal fellow at St. Catherine’s thirty-two years ago.

Young.

Brilliant.

Already angry.

His wife Clara had delivered their first son in Room 412.

The Russo baby.

The third boy born that night.

Mara pulled his history.

Adrian later became a respected pediatric surgeon.

Retired twelve years ago.

No criminal record.

No disciplinary actions.

One malpractice suit.

Dismissed.

No obvious reason to orchestrate a newborn switch.

Then Evelyn Marsh began talking.

Not in the hallway.

Police interview room.

Lawyer offered.

She declined.

Mara recorded.

Evelyn had been charge nurse that night.

Printer malfunctioned.

Three sets of bracelets came out smudged.

She ordered reprints.

Then Adrian Russo approached.

He said one infant’s cord sample had been mislabeled.

He needed temporary bracelet removal to correct lab records.

Routine enough.

Evelyn let him.

That was her mistake.

How long were bands off?

Seven minutes.

Three babies in bassinets.

Three mothers recovering.

One physician moving between them.

Then Adrian returned bands.

Evelyn reattached according to bassinet cards.

Later she noticed one bassinet card had been rewritten.

She confronted Adrian.

He said clerical mistake.

She believed him.

For two days.

Then Clara Russo told Evelyn something strange.

“My baby doesn’t have the birthmark.”

What birthmark?

Clara had seen a small dark patch near her son’s left shoulder immediately after birth.

The baby later in her room had none.

Evelyn checked Moretti infant.

He had a faint mark near left shoulder.

Luca unconsciously touched beneath his shirt.

He had one.

Still.

Silence.

So baby Sofia Moretti took home might have been Clara Russo’s biological son.

Luca.

Then where did Sofia’s biological baby go?

Bellini?

And Bellini baby to Russo?

Three-way rotation.

Why?

Evelyn did not know.

She confronted Adrian again.

He threatened her career.

Then Carlo Moretti arrived.

He already knew something was wrong.

How?

Sofia had noticed different cry? No.

Carlo had ordered private blood typing because of an old family clotting disorder.

The infant with Sofia had a blood type impossible for Carlo and Sofia.

There.

Carlo knew Luca was not biologically theirs within days.

Yet he took him home.

Why?

Evelyn said Carlo confronted Adrian.

Private.

Afterward Carlo told her:

“You never speak of this again.”

Then he paid for her silence?

No.

Important.

He did not.

He threatened legal ruin and said correcting the switch would trigger a war with Bellini.

Why Bellini?

Because Maria Bellini’s infant blood type suggested he was biologically Moretti.

Victor Bellini had unknowingly taken home Carlo’s son.

And the Russo family may have taken home Victor’s son.

A three-family switch.

Then Luca asked:

“Who grew up as Bellini?”

Mara found birth.

Maria Bellini’s son:

Matteo Bellini.

Current age thirty-two.

Alive.

Occupation:

cardiologist in Seattle.

No criminal life.

No connection to Chicago business.

Interesting.

Who grew up Russo?

Clara and Adrian’s son:

Daniel Russo.

Age thirty-two.

Current:

executive vice president, Bellini Medical Foundation.

Wait if he was biologically Bellini, he later worked Bellini organization unknowingly.

Coincidence? Maybe Adrian steered.

Then Luca.

Raised Moretti.

Potentially biologically Russo.

Three boys living the wrong family identities.

But why would Adrian do it?

Evelyn finally answered.

“He thought Victor Bellini had killed his brother.”

Adrian’s younger brother Paolo had died during a construction collapse tied to Bellini contractors two years earlier.

Adrian blamed Victor.

He also hated Carlo Moretti because Moretti insurers helped deny the family claim.

Revenge.

So he switched their sons?

Evelyn shook her head.

“That’s what I believed for years.”

But later?

“Carlo found me ten years after.”

He said Adrian did not act alone.

Someone paid him.

Who?

Victor Bellini.

Silence.

Why would Victor pay to switch his own son?

That made no sense.

Unless Victor knew Maria’s child was not his.

There.

Mara dug.

Maria Bellini had an affair with Carlo Moretti?

Too repetitive and incest risk perhaps. Better another motive.

Maybe Victor had hereditary disease he didn't want passed? Hmm.

Or insurance scheme? Let's avoid paternity melodrama. Victor paid Adrian not to switch, but to alter one test? Let's carefully revise.

Evelyn says Carlo found evidence Adrian received a large payment from Bellini Medical Trust same week. Could be hush money after fact, not order.

Yes.

Victor discovered switch and paid Adrian to keep quiet because Bellini baby he took was biologically Moretti—valuable leverage over Carlo. Victor chose not to correct.

Carlo also chose not to correct because retrieving his biological son would mean giving up Luca and revealing hospital scandal.

Both powerful fathers preserved the error.

Adrian had started as revenge.

Then fathers turned mistake into secret.

Good.

Then what happened to Russo family?

Adrian himself took home a baby he knew was not biologically his.

Victor’s son.

Why would he accept?

Because changing back would expose him.

Clara did not know initially.

Later she learned.

Marriage collapsed?

Records show divorce when Daniel was five.

Clara moved to Arizona.

Adrian raised Daniel.

Then current Elena Russo—Daniel’s daughter.

The baby in Luca’s arms is Daniel Russo’s daughter.

So she is biologically Bellini great-granddaughter? Wait Daniel biologically Bellini son, thus his daughter biologically Bellini granddaughter (not great). Adrian is legal grandfather, not biological. Fine.

That newborn’s bracelet says Russo because legal family.

The current switch uses a Russo baby as visible substitute.

Mirror.

Then Luca’s daughter.

Why take her?

Adrian wants to “correct the mistake.”

How?

Maybe exchange babies among adult family lines? Can't correct adults. He wants DNA proof and force public acknowledgment.

He could simply reveal records.

Why kidnap Luca’s newborn?

Because he believes family only acts when children at stake.

Maybe he intends to force simultaneous DNA tests and confession.

Still wrong.

Then Evelyn said:

“Adrian called me yesterday.”

He knew Vanessa was delivering.

He said:

“Tomorrow the Morettis learn what it feels like to hold the wrong child.”

There.

Revenge reenactment.

Then why Elena Russo’s baby?

Because Adrian needed a baby born same night in same hospital to recreate scene.

His granddaughter delivered six minutes earlier.

Did Elena know?

Probably not.

Then where is Elena’s husband / Daniel? He is at conference? Maybe in hospital cafeteria? Let's establish.

Daniel Russo had been at his wife’s side until emergency C-section, then sent to NICU waiting. Security footage shows him searching for daughter now.

He has no clue.

Good.

Mara brings Daniel in.

Luca sees him.

Same age.

Face unfamiliar.

But something about eyes?

No need cinematic.

Daniel is furious his daughter is missing from nursery.

Then he learns she was in Vanessa’s room.

He stares at Luca holding her.

“Give me my daughter.”

Echo.

Luca immediately hands baby to pediatric nurse, who reunites after identity checks.

Good.

No hostage dynamic.

Then Daniel hears thirty-two-year story.

He thinks insane.

Requests DNA.

So does Luca.

So does Matteo Bellini once contacted.

Independent lab.

No family labs.

Results expedited but not instant.

Meanwhile locate Adrian.

His phone off.

Home empty.

Car found at hospital garage.

Surveillance:

Adrian leaves hospital through ambulance bay carrying a closed infant transport carrier.

At 4:38.

Vehicle:

old white medical transport van.

Plate cloned.

Then one clue.

Thirty-two-year photo.

Background wall tile pattern.

Mara realizes not maternity floor.

It was neonatal research room B.

Adrian had taken photo after switch.

Maybe he kept babies together for minutes.

Room B still exists in old closed St. Catherine annex.

Renovated hospital built around it.

Now archival storage.

Access corridor under construction.

Adrian’s retired physician badge should not work.

But someone activated it yesterday.

By:

DANIEL RUSSO.

Daniel goes white.

“I didn’t.”

Credential issued through his foundation administrator account.

Compromised.

Adrian used son’s access again.

Then Mara gets warrant for old annex.

They find transport van.

Empty.

One baby blanket.

Moretti hospital tag cut off.

Blood? None.

Formula.

Warm bottle.

Good.

Then speaker system turns on.

Adrian’s voice.

“Luca.”

Everyone freezes.

“You have spent thirty-two years wearing another man’s name.”

Luca says nothing.

Then:

“Your daughter will be safe when the truth is corrected.”

Luca looks at Mara.

She signals no response? Maybe tactical.

Adrian continues:

“Bring Matteo Bellini and Daniel Russo to Room B.”

There.

All three switched babies.

Adults now.

He wants them together.

Then:

“No fathers. No lawyers. No guards.”

Impossible.

Then:

“And bring the photograph.”

The same old image.

Mara whispers:

“He wants a reenactment.”

Luca’s expression hardens.

No.

Adrian was not correcting anything.

He was trying to force three grown men back into bassinets their fathers had chosen for them.

Evelyn’s account of Clara noticing a missing birthmark was later supported by a newborn exam note describing the mark before the bracelets were reissued.

Victor Bellini’s payment to Adrian appeared after the switch, supporting concealment rather than proving he ordered the original act.

Daniel Russo’s immediate demand for independent DNA testing helped keep the modern crisis from becoming another family-controlled inquiry.

The old annex search was conducted under police authority because Adrian’s demand did not give Luca the right to enter hospital property privately.

The three adult men were offered separate counsel before any genetic result was shared with the families.

Years later, the families would connect this stage to safeguard 6: infant identity needed layered independent verification, biological truth could inform medicine without deciding belonging, and no adult was allowed to use a child as a message for a grievance that began before the child was born.
