Chapter 3

Matteo Bellini arrived from Seattle by evening.

Not willingly at first.

A cardiologist.

Married.

Two children.

No role in Bellini Group.

He thought the call was extortion.

Then Mara sent hospital records through counsel.

He came.

Daniel Russo stayed at St. Catherine’s because Elena and their daughter needed him.

Luca remained near Vanessa and the missing Moretti baby.

Three men.

Same birthday.

Same hospital.

Possibly switched in a cycle.

Independent DNA results returned at 7:20 PM.

Clear.

Luca Moretti:

biological parents consistent with Clara Russo and Adrian Russo.

Matteo Bellini:

biological parents consistent with Sofia and Carlo Moretti.

Daniel Russo:

biological parents consistent with Maria and Victor Bellini.

There.

No ambiguity.

The three-way switch was real.

Luca read his report once.

Then put it down.

He did not become less Luca.

But his body suddenly belonged to a story no one had told him.

Matteo Bellini laughed from shock.

“So I’m a Moretti.”

Luca said:

“Biologically.”

Matteo:

“Do I get a hotel?”

“No.”

Good.

Daniel did not laugh.

He stared at Adrian Russo’s name as Luca’s biological father.

Meaning Adrian had switched away his own biological son.

Luca.

He had raised Victor Bellini’s biological child, Daniel, instead.

That was more personal than revenge.

Daniel whispered:

“He gave you away.”

Luca looked at him.

“He gave all of us away.”

Exactly.

Then why?

Mara found Adrian’s old diary in home search.

Not confession neatly labeled.

Fragments.

Paolo’s death.

Bellini rage.

Moretti insurer denial.

Newborn rotation.

One line:

LET THEIR NAMES BECOME MEANINGLESS.

There.

Adrian wanted to prove family names were accidents.

Cruel experiment.

Then after switch:

CARLO KNOWS.

VICTOR KNOWS.

NEITHER WANTS TRUTH.

Another:

THEY ARE WORSE THAN ME.

Maybe.

Then Clara.

Luca’s biological mother.

Alive.

Seventy-eight.

Arizona.

Mara contacted through local authorities.

She already knew.

Not whole truth?

She knew her baby had been switched.

Adrian confessed during divorce.

He told her her biological son was with Morettis.

Why didn’t she retrieve Luca?

She tried.

She wrote Carlo.

He threatened legal action and said Luca was secure, loved, and any attempt to expose would destabilize three children.

Victor Bellini threatened too.

Clara had little money.

Adrian had custody influence.

She gave up.

Painful.

Then Luca spoke to her by phone.

No emotional reunion yet.

Clara cried.

“I watched you in newspapers.”

Luca said nothing.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

He replied:

“I don’t know you.”

Honest.

She said:

“I know.”

Good.

Then Sofia Moretti, Luca’s legal mother, dead nine years.

Carlo dead six.

They cannot answer.

Matteo Bellini’s legal parents:

Maria alive.

Victor dead.

Maria admitted she learned when Matteo was two.

Victor told her never to speak.

She loved Matteo.

Did not want him taken.

Same.

Daniel’s legal mother Clara? Wait Clara is Adrian's wife and biological mother of Luca, but if Daniel Russo was raised by Adrian and Clara, Clara would have raised a non-biological child too until divorce at five. So she was Daniel's legal mother too. Correct. Daniel has known Clara as mother. Now learns she is biological mother of Luca, not him. Maria Bellini biological mother of Daniel. Great.

This gets emotionally complex but manageable.

Then current baby.

Where?

Adrian demands all three adults in Room B.

Mara will not comply literally.

But she uses communication.

Sends proof they are together at hospital.

Adrian calls.

Video.

For first time, Luca sees his daughter.

Sleeping in bassinet.

Adrian sits nearby.

No weapon visible.

Baby appears unharmed.

Luca’s breath catches.

Vanessa sobs beside him.

Adrian says:

“Now you know.”

Luca:

“Where is she?”

“Where you started.”

Room B?

Maybe not.

Mara triangulates background hum.

Old neonatal wing?

Likely.

Police search annex floor by floor.

Adrian continues:

“Carlo took my son.”

Luca’s eyes narrow.

“You switched me.”

Adrian:

“And Carlo kept you.”

Important distinction.

Then:

“Victor kept Matteo.”

No, Victor kept biological Moretti child Matteo.

“And I kept Daniel.”

All three fathers chose after discovering.

Then:

“We all committed the same sin.”

Luca:

“No.”

Adrian smiles.

“No?”

“You created it.”

That lands.

Then Luca:

“They failed to fix it.”

Different responsibility.

Good.

Adrian gets angry.

“You think Carlo loved you?”

“Yes.”

Luca says it without hesitation.

Maybe true.

“Love doesn’t make what he did right.”

Good.

Then Matteo Bellini speaks unexpectedly.

“Victor loved me too.”

Daniel:

“Adrian raised me.”

All three.

Adrian expected them to reject families and validate experiment.

They did not.

Names can be wrong biologically and still real socially.

That breaks his ideology.

Then he says:

“You are cowards.”

Mara whispers:

“Keep him talking.”

Then Luca asks:

“Why my daughter?”

Adrian:

“Because Vanessa delivered at the same hospital. Because Elena did too. Because history gave me one last chance.”

History did not.

He chose.

Then:

“I wanted you to hold the wrong baby and feel the lie.”

Luca:

“I did.”

Pause.

“You made your point.”

Then:

“Bring her back.”

Adrian looks shaken.

He wanted argument.

Not simple.

Then Vanessa speaks.

“You used my daughter to punish dead men.”

Adrian:

“Your father kept the lie.”

Vanessa:

“My father is dead.”

Then:

“My daughter isn’t.”

Good.

Then camera feed shifts.

A door behind Adrian.

Number:

B-14.

Mara sees.

Old annex map.

Room B-14.

Tactical team moves silently.

Adrian hears something.

Looks toward door.

Then feed ends.

Luca starts forward.

Mara blocks him.

“No.”

Seconds.

Too long.

Then radio:

“Infant secure.”

Luca closes eyes.

“Adrian in custody.”

No shots.

No injuries.

Baby secure.

That should end immediate crisis.

But not story.

Because the current switch had exposed a second crime.

Hospital records showed someone had deliberately activated old credentials, disabled infant tags, and moved Elena Russo’s baby before Adrian entered Vanessa’s room.

Adrian was seventy-eight.

He could not have done all the digital work alone.

He admitted one helper.

Not name.

Then Mara found administrator login.

User:

VANESSA BELLINI.

Silence.

Luca turned slowly toward Vanessa.

She stared back.

“No.”

But this time—

her account really had opened the system that allowed Adrian to take their daughter.

Clara’s archived letters to Carlo showed she had tried at least twice to approach Luca, complicating the idea that she simply abandoned him.

Maria Bellini’s records showed she learned the truth only after bonding with Matteo, which explained but did not excuse her later silence.

The Room B-14 camera feed allowed officers to confirm Lucia was breathing normally before the tactical entry.

Adrian’s diary established ideology and resentment but prosecutors still relied on physical records to prove the switch.

The helper-access investigation continued even after Lucia was recovered because a safe rescue did not erase the system breach.
