What Rachel Bought With Her Silence

Chapter 07 - What Rachel Bought With Her Silence
Rachel had been pregnant when she signed the settlement.
Daniel did not know.
Nobody had told him.
“Ellie’s father was a paramedic named Ben Turner,” Rachel said. “We were engaged. Dad had his employer convinced Ben had stolen medication from an ambulance unit.”
Daniel stared.
“Did he?”
“No.”
“Can you prove Dad did that?”
“No.”
Rachel’s voice was flat.
“That was the point.”
She explained what happened next.
Charles offered her a choice.
Fight him publicly and watch Ben lose his career while Rachel faced criminal charges for the missing relief money.
Or sign a settlement.
Leave Chicago.
Say nothing about Mercer Urban Holdings.
Rachel chose the money.
She and Ben moved to Arizona.
They used most of the settlement fighting to clear Ben’s professional record.
They failed.
He eventually found work with a private transport company.
Five years later, he died from a heart condition.
Rachel was left with Ellie, medical bills, and a family name she refused to use.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he felt ashamed of how quickly he had judged her.
“You should have told me.”
Rachel looked at him.
“I tried.”
The twenty-three letters.
Daniel lowered his head.
“Why come back now?”
“Because Alder Street was Ben’s mother’s building.”
Daniel looked up.
Rachel continued.
“After Ben died, Ellie and I moved back to Chicago to help his mother. She passed last year. The building was rent-controlled. Then Mercer bought the block.”
Daniel knew what came next.
Relocation.
Demolition.
Luxury housing.
Rachel reached for a cup of water.
“Families were promised assistance. Some got it. Some didn’t. Money disappeared between the city contract and the relocation vendors.”
Daniel thought of the old employee relief fund.
Same pattern.
Different names.
“Who were you meeting three nights ago?”
“June Hall.”
Daniel recognized the name.
Senior accounting manager.
Thirty-one years with Mercer.
“She asked me to meet her because she found something.”
“What?”
Rachel shook her head.
“She never showed.”
Daniel pulled out his phone.
He called June.
No answer.
He called again.
Voicemail.
Then he checked the internal employee system.
June Hall’s profile was inactive.
Termination date: that morning.
Reason: voluntary resignation.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Rachel watched his face.
“What?”
Daniel looked at her.
“June quit today.”
Rachel’s eyes narrowed.
“No, she didn’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because last night she left me a voicemail.”
Rachel reached for her phone.
The message was seven seconds long.
June’s voice sounded shaky.
Rachel, I was right. It goes higher than Charles.
May you like
Daniel felt the room go cold.
Then the message ended.
