Rachel’s Last Secret

Chapter 13 - Rachel’s Last Secret

Rachel wanted to leave Chicago.

Daniel found out because Ellie told him.

“She packed the suitcase,” the girl said.

Daniel looked toward the motel room.

“Did she say where you’re going?”

“No.”

He knocked.

Rachel opened the door and immediately knew why he was there.

“You shouldn’t involve Ellie.”

“You shouldn’t make her keep secrets.”

Rachel stepped into the hallway.

“I’m trying to keep her safe.”

“From Dad?”

“From all of it.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The message?”

Rachel stared.

“How do you know?”

“Ellie saw you.”

Rachel looked exhausted.

“It could be anyone.”

“Then why are you leaving?”

“Because I have done this before.”

“What?”

“Waited for your family to decide how much pain I was allowed to survive.”

Daniel flinched.

“Our family.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No. I stopped calling it mine years ago.”

He let the silence sit.

Then asked, “What aren’t you telling me?”

Rachel looked away.

Daniel waited.

Finally, she said, “I came back to Chicago six months before the Alder Street sale.”

“You said you came back because of Ben’s mother.”

“I did.”

“That’s not the whole truth.”

“No.”

Rachel sat on the hallway floor.

Daniel sat beside her.

“When Ben died,” she said, “I found a box of things he had kept from me.”

Letters.

Copies of job applications.

Notes from attorneys.

A record of every employer who suddenly withdrew interest after contacting a Mercer-affiliated background firm.

Ben had spent years trying to prove Charles had blacklisted him.

Rachel had never known how much the fight had consumed him.

“I blamed Dad,” she said. “But I blamed myself more.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I came back because I wanted revenge.”

The word surprised him.

“I wanted to expose him. Humiliate him. Tear down the company if I could.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Rachel looked toward the motel door.

“Ellie.”

She smiled sadly.

“She asked why I was always angry at people she had never met.”

Daniel felt his throat tighten.

“So I stopped looking for revenge.”

“And started looking at Alder Street?”

“Yes.”

Rachel stood.

“I don’t want her growing up inside my anger.”

Daniel understood.

For years, he had been controlled by his father’s approval.

Rachel had been controlled by her hatred of it.

Different cages.

Same house.

“Don’t leave tonight,” he said.

Rachel looked at him.

“Give me one week.”

“For what?”

“To make Chicago a place you don’t have to run from.”

Rachel almost laughed.

“You don’t own Chicago anymore.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Good. Maybe I can finally help.”

She agreed to seven days.

The next morning, the board announced a permanent vote to strip Daniel of his remaining executive authority.

And Charles scheduled it for Friday.

Seven days away.
