The Invitation

Chapter 19 - The Invitation

The invitation arrived in November.

Not to Daniel.

To Rachel.

Charles Mercer requested dinner.

Rachel stared at the envelope for three days.

Then she called Daniel.

“Do I have to go?”

“No.”

“Do you think I should?”

“That’s different.”

“What do you think?”

Daniel paused.

“I think you should do whatever lets you sleep afterward.”

Rachel went.

Daniel did not.

Two hours later, she called.

“He apologized.”

Daniel sat up.

“For what?”

“Specific things.”

That surprised him.

Charles apologized for the letters.

For Ben.

For calling Rachel dishonest on television.

For choosing the company over his children and pretending it was the same as protecting them.

“Did you forgive him?” Daniel asked.

Rachel was quiet.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“Okay.”

“But I told him I might someday.”

That was more than Daniel expected.

At Thanksgiving, Rachel invited Charles to dinner.

Not at the estate.

At her house.

Charles arrived carrying a pie from a grocery store because he did not know what else to bring.

Ellie opened the door.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then she said, “You’re Grandpa.”

Charles’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“You were mean to my mom.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Daniel looked at the ceiling.

Charles swallowed.

“Yes.”

Ellie considered this.

“Are you going to be mean today?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

She stepped aside.

That was the entire ceremony.

No orchestra.

No grand forgiveness.

Just a child holding a door open while an old man decided whether he deserved to walk through it.

Dinner was awkward.

Charles spoke too formally.

Rachel corrected him twice.

Daniel burned the rolls.

Ellie laughed so hard milk came out of her nose.

Nobody talked about the company.

After dessert, Charles stood to leave.

At the door, he looked at Rachel.

“Thank you.”

She nodded.

Then he looked at Daniel.

His mouth opened.

No words came.

Daniel understood.

Some families spent generations waiting for perfect sentences.

He no longer needed one.

“Good night, Dad.”

Charles nodded.

“Good night, Danny.”

Daniel froze.

May you like

Rachel smiled.

It was the first time in twelve years that the name sounded like home instead of loss.
