What Was Inside the Box

Chapter 18 - What Was Inside the Box
Elena opened the box after everyone left.
Inside were copies of Margaret Wynn’s handwritten notes, foundation records, and photographs Elena had never seen.
One picture showed Margaret in the Bellmont penthouse laughing beside a tray of burnt cinnamon coffee.
Elena laughed until she cried.
At the bottom of the box was a letter from Charlotte.
It was only one page.
I spent years believing my mother trusted you instead of me. I understand now that she trusted you with parts of herself she was afraid to show me. That was not your theft. It was our failure to speak honestly while she was alive.
I am not asking you to forgive me.
I am asking you to keep these because you were part of her life, and pretending otherwise caused enough damage.
Elena folded the letter.
The next week, she invited Charlotte for coffee.
Not friendship.
Not forgiveness.
Coffee.
They sat at a small diner far from the Bellmont. Charlotte ordered cinnamon coffee and made a face after the first sip.
“My mother actually liked this?”
“No,” Elena said. “She liked complaining about mine.”
Charlotte laughed.
It was the first time Elena heard a sound from her that did not carry performance, anger, or fear.
Then Charlotte became serious.
“My father is stepping down from the foundation board.”
“Because he changed?”
“No. Because the board finally did.”
Elena nodded.
