The Price of a Family Name

Chapter 13 - The Price of a Family Name

Robert moved quickly.

By afternoon, his attorneys had drafted statements blaming the incident on “confusion during a high-stress event.” Richard Cole proposed reinstating Elena with back pay if she signed a confidentiality agreement.

The offer included enough money to make Maya stare at the page twice.

Elena pushed it back across the table.

“No.”

Richard looked stunned. “You should speak with an attorney before refusing.”

“I will. But I do not need an attorney to know what this says.”

“It says the hotel wants to make you whole.”

Elena shook her head. “It says you want me quiet.”

Meanwhile, Charlotte sat in the penthouse where the accusation had begun. She watched the viral hallway video again.

This time she saw what everyone else had missed.

Elena had never raised her voice.

Never stepped toward her.

Never insulted her.

Charlotte had filled the entire hallway with rage while Elena stood there trying to keep her dignity intact.

Robert entered without knocking.

“You confessed?”

“Yes.”

“Then deny it.”

Charlotte stared at him.

He continued, “Your mother was sentimental at the end. Elena influenced her. I protected the foundation from irresponsible decisions.”

“You lied to me.”

“I protected you.”

“No. You gave me someone poorer than us to blame.”

Robert’s face hardened.

Charlotte stood.

“And I was weak enough to believe you.”

She picked up her phone.

Her father’s voice rose. “What are you doing?”

Charlotte opened the social-media account where the hallway clip was spreading.

“The one thing you taught me never to do.”

May you like

She pressed record.

“I am going to embarrass the family with the truth.”
