The Letter Margaret Never Got to Send

Chapter 11 - The Letter Margaret Never Got to Send

Charlotte refused to meet Elena privately.

So Elena asked Noah to stay.

The three of them stood in a quiet conference room overlooking the city. Charlotte remained near the window, arms crossed. Elena placed the envelope on the table.

“Your mother gave me this three weeks before she died.”

Charlotte stared at it.

“My father said you tried to get money from her.”

“I never asked your mother for money.”

“He said you manipulated her.”

Elena’s voice stayed calm. “Your father said many things.”

Charlotte picked up the envelope.

Her hands began to tremble before she broke the seal.

Margaret’s letter was four pages long.

Charlotte read the first page standing.

She read the second sitting down.

By the third, she was crying without sound.

Margaret wrote that Elena had refused every personal gift she offered. She wrote that Elena stayed through nights when private nurses called in sick. She wrote that the sapphire brooch had been placed in a bank box, not stolen.

Then came the sentence that broke something open inside Charlotte.

I was hardest on you because I mistook fear for strength, and your father encouraged me to do it.

Charlotte covered her mouth.

The final page explained that Margaret had wanted part of the Wynn Foundation’s annual budget redirected into scholarships for hotel employees and their children. Elena had suggested it after hearing Margaret complain that “people work in this building for thirty years and leave with nothing but a watch.”

Robert had killed the proposal after Margaret died.

Charlotte lowered the letter.

“What did I do?” she whispered.

Elena looked at her for a long moment.

Then she said, “You tell me.”
