The Door Ethan Finally Closed

Chapter 08 - The Door Ethan Finally Closed

Ethan confronted Rebecca in the library.

He placed the bracelet on the desk between them.

She looked at it and said nothing.

“Helen found it in your linen cabinet.”

Rebecca’s jaw tightened.

“You searched my things?”

“No. She opened a cabinet she uses every day.”

Rebecca turned toward the window.

Ethan waited.

Finally, she said, “The girl is trouble.”

“She is ten.”

“She is manipulating Clara.”

“She helped Clara feel hope.”

“Exactly.”

Ethan stared at her.

Rebecca’s voice rose.

“Hope is dangerous when people like you can afford to abandon the consequences.”

Ethan stepped back.

There it was again.

Not greed.

Not yet.

Resentment.

Rebecca had lost her sister too. She had watched Ethan retreat into work while she became nurse, advocate, scheduler, guardian, and emotional shield.

Somewhere along the way, care had become control.

“You wanted Mia gone because she made us ask questions,” Ethan said.

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“You want to blame me because you were absent.”

“I do blame myself.”

That stopped her.

Ethan continued.

“But my guilt does not erase what you did.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“After Laura died, I kept this family together.”

“And then you decided it belonged to you.”

He asked her to leave the house.

Rebecca looked genuinely shocked.

“You’re throwing me out?”

“I’m asking you to leave before I call the police about the false theft report.”

“You would choose a stranger over family?”

Ethan shook his head.

“No. I’m choosing my daughter.”

Rebecca packed that night.

Before she left, she stopped beside Clara’s wheelchair.

“I hope you understand someday that I was trying to protect you.”

Clara looked at her.

“From what?”

Rebecca opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

She walked away without answering.

Two days later, Denise called.

The theft allegation had been cleared.

Ethan could apply for emergency foster placement while Mia’s long-term case was reviewed.

He drove through freezing rain to pick her up.

Mia climbed into the car carrying one plastic bag.

“Am I in trouble?” she asked.

Ethan’s throat tightened.

“No.”

“Then why are you crying?”

He looked straight ahead.

“Because you should have had someone come for you a long time ago.”

When they reached the mansion, Clara was waiting near the front doors.

And on the footrest of her wheelchair, one toe was moving.
