The Feeling No One Expected

Chapter 02 - The Feeling No One Expected
Ethan crossed the room so quickly he nearly knocked into a side table.
“Clara, what did you feel?”
She looked terrified to answer, as if saying it aloud might make it disappear.
“Pressure. Maybe pain. I don’t know. But I felt something.”
Mia still held Clara’s foot carefully.
“My mom used to do that,” she said.
Ethan turned to her.
“Your mother was a doctor?”
“No. She worked in rehab. She said sometimes people stop trying because everyone around them tells them there’s nothing left to save.”
Before Ethan could ask another question, Rebecca Sloan entered the room.
Rebecca was Clara’s aunt—her late mother’s older sister—and had been living in the guest wing since the accident. She had helped Ethan survive the first year after losing his wife. She organized medications, answered hospital calls, and sat beside Clara on nights Ethan could not stop blaming himself.
She took one look at Mia on the floor and stiffened.
“Who is that?”
Ethan explained.
Rebecca’s expression changed from surprise to irritation.
“You brought a runaway child into the house?”
“She needed somewhere warm.”
“And now she’s touching Clara?”
Clara pulled her foot back beneath the blanket.
“I felt it, Aunt Rebecca.”
Rebecca’s face softened immediately.
“Honey, reflexes happen. Your doctors explained that.”
“It wasn’t a reflex.”
“You don’t know that.”
Ethan heard something in Rebecca’s tone that bothered him. Not caution. Not fear.
Certainty.
That evening, Ethan called Dr. Nolan Pierce, the neurologist who had overseen Clara’s care since the accident.
Pierce arrived after dinner.
He tested Clara’s responses and watched her toes move faintly when he applied pressure.
His face remained unreadable.
“Spinal injuries are complicated,” he said. “There can be involuntary movement without meaningful neurological recovery.”
Clara’s shoulders fell.
Mia stood silently near the door.
Ethan asked the question he should have asked years ago.
“When was Clara’s last full neurological reassessment?”
Pierce hesitated.
“Her condition has been stable.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Pierce glanced at Rebecca.
Only for a second.

But Ethan saw it.
And suddenly, the room felt colder than the street where he had found Mia.
