Elena’s Last Fight

Chapter 14 - Elena’s Last Fight

The hospital review took six weeks.

Former nurses were interviewed.

Therapists were contacted.

Old emails were recovered.

The truth was not as clean as Ethan expected.

No single person had ordered everyone to silence Elena.

That would have been easier.

Instead, she had been dismissed through a series of ordinary decisions.

She had complained too often.

She had challenged a senior physician.

She had upset a powerful family representative.

She had refused to “stay in her role.”

Everyone had a reason.

No one had courage.

Dr. Pierce eventually admitted that Elena had been right to request a second neurological review.

He had delayed supporting her because Rebecca threatened to move Clara’s care to another hospital and file a complaint against him.

“I told myself Clara needed continuity,” he said during the review.

Clara, watching from home, whispered, “He means he was scared.”

Ethan nodded.

The hospital issued a formal apology to Mia.

It offered compensation from an employee relief fund.

Mia did not understand why people kept asking whether she wanted money.

“I want my mom’s name fixed,” she said.

So the hospital amended Elena’s record.

Her termination was changed to wrongful dismissal.

A nursing education grant was established in her name.

But the most important moment happened privately.

Dr. Pierce came to the Cole house.

He stood in front of Mia with tears in his eyes.

“Your mother was braver than I was.”

Mia did not forgive him.

She simply said, “I know.”

Then she walked away.

Ethan realized forgiveness was not something adults were entitled to receive from children.

That evening, Clara practiced standing in the drawing room.

Mia counted seconds.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Twenty.

At twenty-three, Clara laughed and collapsed safely into the chair behind her.

Ethan applauded.

Then the doorbell rang.

Rebecca stood outside.

She looked thinner.

Older.

And for the first time since Ethan had known her, completely unsure of herself.

“I need to talk to Clara,” she said.

Ethan blocked the doorway.

“Why?”

May you like

Rebecca’s eyes moved past him.

“Because there is one thing I never told any of you about the night Laura died.”
