The Name She Buried

Chapter 02 - The Name She Buried

Nobody moved for several seconds.

Then everyone moved at once.

Vanessa’s father, Conrad Hale, pushed through the guests. Two security men came from the side doors. My best man, Mark Ellis, started toward me. Someone in the back lifted a phone.

I raised my hand.

“Stop.”

The security guards froze.

The boy flinched anyway.

That small movement told me more than Vanessa’s denial had.

I stepped down from the platform and crouched so I was closer to his height.

“What’s your name?”

“Noah.”

“Noah what?”

His eyes went back to Vanessa.

“Blake.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Conrad reached us and spoke in the calm, expensive voice he used at fundraisers.

“This is clearly some kind of stunt. Daniel, we should take this somewhere private.”

Noah heard him.

His shoulders tightened.

“I’m not lying.”

“I didn’t say you were,” I told him.

Vanessa did.

“This is insane,” she said. “I have never seen that boy in my life.”

Noah stared at her.

Then he said, “You used to sing ‘Blue Moon’ when the lights went out.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

So did Lily.

Noah kept going.

“You said thunder was just furniture moving in heaven. You hated grape jelly. You burned pancakes every Sunday.”

Vanessa backed away.

Conrad stepped between them.

“That’s enough.”

“No,” I said. “It isn’t.”

My voice sounded strange through the microphone I was still holding. Every word carried across the ballroom.

I switched it off.

“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered, “please.”

“Is he your son?”

She looked at me.

Then at the cameras.

Then at her father.

That was the moment I understood what mattered most to her.

Not the boy.

Not Lily.

Not me.

The room.

The story.

The way she would look when people told it tomorrow.

“No,” she said.

Noah’s face finally broke.

One tear slipped down his cheek.

Lily stepped away from me and walked toward him.

I almost called her back.

Instead, she stopped in front of him.

“Do you know my dad?” she asked.

Noah shook his head.

“Then why did you come here?”

He looked at Vanessa again.

“Because she was going to be your mom.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

Noah lowered his voice.

“And I thought you should know what she did to me before she got the chance to do it to you.”

I heard Vanessa gasp.

Then Lily began to cry.

May you like

And when I looked at the woman in the wedding dress, I realized the wedding was over.

What I did not know yet was how many people had helped her hide the truth.
