The Last Name

Chapter 19 - The Last Name
The adoption hearing happened eighteen months after the wedding that never happened.
No chandeliers.
No cameras.
No reporters.
Just a small courtroom, a patient judge, Judith Sloan, Erica Lawson, Mara, Mrs. Alvarez, Lily, Noah, and me.
Mark came too.
He sat in the back.
Vanessa did not attend.
She had signed the necessary documents months earlier.
But she sent Noah a short note.
TODAY IS YOURS. I WILL NOT MAKE IT ABOUT ME.
He tucked it into his pocket.
The judge asked Noah if he understood what adoption meant.
He said yes.
She asked if anyone had pressured him.
He looked at Lily.
“She pressures me to clean the bathroom.”
The judge laughed.
“So noted.”
Then she asked what name he wanted to use.
I had assumed Mercer.
I should not have assumed.
Noah looked at me.
Then at Mara.
Then he said, “Noah Blake Mercer.”
My throat closed.
He kept Blake.
For Evan.
For Mara.
For the boy he had been before us.
He took Mercer.
For us.
For the family he was choosing now.
The judge signed the order.
Lily burst into tears before I did.
Noah pretended he was not crying.
Then he walked into my arms.
Not because a social worker told him to.
Not because a judge approved it.
Because he wanted to.
Outside the courthouse, Mark handed me an envelope.
My first instinct was to laugh.
“Please tell me this isn’t another secret memo.”
“No.”
It was a letter.
From the board of my old company.
They wanted me back.
Not as CEO.
As chairman.
The Hale deal was dead. Several directors had resigned. The company wanted to rebuild trust.
The salary was enormous.
The title was prestigious.
The old version of me would have said yes before reaching the elevator.
I looked at Noah and Lily.
They were racing each other down the courthouse steps while Mara yelled at them not to fall.
I folded the letter.
Then I put it back in the envelope.

I already knew my answer.
But I wanted my children to hear it first.
